The Frivolous King Of The Endable Kingdom

Summary:

"I assure you, my son," Fredo said, his eyes darting from side to side, "it is but a phase, a rare condition, perhaps. A... vampiric molting, if you will."

Cale chuckled, his laughter low and amused.

"If you say so, Your Majesty. Though I must admit, I've never heard of such a thing."

Work Text:

"Ah, Your Majesty," Cale Henituse said, a twinkle in his eye, "Your hair seems particularly... robust tonight."

Fredo von Ejellan, the now King of the Endable Kingdom, adjusted the wig that was precariously perched on his head.

It was a ghastly affair of overly-coiffed light-grey hair, so thick it looked like a pigeon had exploded over his skull.

He offered a tight smile in response, his fangs glinting in the dim candlelight of the grand hall.

"Indeed, Cale," he replied, his voice a smooth purr. "One must maintain one's image, even in the face of the eternal night."

The two men stood at the top of the grand staircase, surveying the masquerade ball that swirled below them like a sea of velvet and lace.

The chandeliers cast a warm glow across the faces of the nobility as they danced and flitted about, their laughter echoing off the ancient stone walls. The music was a delightful mix of string instruments and the occasional haunting melody from a flute, a sound that was both elegant and eerie.

Fredo's hand absently played with the bracelet that encircled his wrist.

It was a family heirloom, passed down through generations of vampire dukes.

It was said to be the symbol that granted the power to eternal youth and strength, but it came at a cost.

The hair of each vampire who became the Head of the family would fall out as they approached their centennial year, leaving their scalps as bare as the moon in the midnight sky.

He leaned in closer, his own fiery hair a stark contrast to the duke's dull locks.

"But if it is indeed a phase, I dare say you're handling it with more grace than any of us could ever hope to muster."

Fredo's smile grew more forced with each passing second.

The whispers grew louder, the glances more pointed. He felt the weight of his secret pressing down on him like a heavy cloak, threatening to suffocate him.

The fear of losing his power, his image, and his position was almost too much to bear.

But Cale seemed utterly unfazed.

He waded through the room with an ease that made Fredo's heart clench with envy.

How could he be so at peace with such a glaring imperfection?

Fredo's hand clenched around his bracelet, the metal digging into his flesh as he thought of the power it symbolized, and the price he paid for it.

The evening rolled on, Fredo's anxiety growing with each passing minute.

He watched Cale, his mind racing with thoughts of what he could do to distract from his own folly.

And as the music reached a crescendo and the dancers spun closer, an idea began to form in the shadows of his mind, a ludicrous, over-the-top plan that just might work...

The next day, Fredo summoned the most renowned hair stylist in the land, a reclusive creature named Monsieur Whisker.

Known for his outlandish and sometimes dangerous creations, Monsieur Whisker was the only one who could craft a wig so grand that it would leave no room for doubt about the King's hair vitality.

The stylist arrived at the castle with an air of pomp and a collection of hairpieces that looked more suited to a peacock than a vampire.

Mrs. Whisker, his equally eccentric wife, began to mix a potion that would secure the wig in place.

The potion bubbled and hissed, releasing a noxious odor that had the castle staff retreating to the farthest corners.

Meanwhile, Fredo sat rigidly in his chair, sweat beading his forehead as his mind conjured images of the impending banquet.

The grand ballroom had been transformed into a hair-themed wonderland, with silk banners emblazoned with locks of hair and candelabras shaped like combs.

The centerpiece was a giant wig stand, holding what was to be Fredo's pièce de résistance.

The styling process was a marathon of pins, hairspray, and incantations.

Finally, as the moon reached its zenith, Fredo looked in the mirror and beheld his new masterpiece.

It was a monstrosity of hair, a towering black mane that could rival the darkest thundercloud.

He felt a twinge of pride, but it was quickly overshadowed by the fear of discovery.

What if it fell off?

What if it caught fire from one of the many candles scattered about the room?

The night of the banquet arrived, and Fredo descended the stairs, his heart in his throat.

The whispers of the nobles grew to a murmur as he approached the throne, his wig wobbling precariously with each step.

He took his seat and surveyed the room, his eyes locking with Cale's. The red-haired hero merely gave his usual expression, and Fredo felt a strange sense of calm wash over him.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad after all.

But fate had other plans.

As he raised his goblet for a toast, a rogue spark from a nearby torch shot through the air, landing on the tower of hair.

With a sizzle and a pop, the wig erupted into flames.

Fredo screamed, the room froze, and Cale leaped into action, using his elemental powers to extinguish the fire before it could spread.

As the smoke cleared and the room stared in shock, Fredo realized his secret was out.

He felt his pride slipping away, his image shattered.

But as he looked around, he saw not the disdain he had feared, but a roomful of vampires trying to stifle their laughter.

Cale stepped forward, his own hair ruffled from the ruckus, and offered his hand to help Fredo stand.

"Your Majesty," he said, his voice steady and kind, "Your hair does not make you a leader. It is your wisdom, your strength, and your courage that truly define you."

The room grew quiet, and Fredo felt the weight of his fear and vanity lift from his shoulders.

He took a deep breath, removed the scorched wig, and for the first time in a century, the Vampire King stood before his people, bald and unashamed.

"You speak the truth, Cale," he said, his voice strong despite the tremble in his hand.

He turned to the shocked assembly. "I am Fredo von Ejellan, and I am not afraid to be seen as I truly am."

A murmur of disbelief and awe rippled through the crowd. The vampires who had once envied Fredo's hair now saw a leader willing to embrace his vulnerability.

A noble clapped his hands together, breaking the tension. "To the Duke's newfound confidence!" he shouted, and the room erupted into cheers and laughter.

The music restarted, and the partygoers returned to their revelries, a newfound sense of camaraderie buzzing through the air like an electric current.

Fredo, now wigless, took his place at the head of the table.

The whispers had transformed into nods of respect and admiration.

His bald head gleamed under the flickering candlelight, and he felt lighter than he had in centuries.

He looked to Cale, who offered a small genuine smile and raised his glass in salute.

The banquet continued, the air thick with the smell of burnt hair and the sweet scent of victory over vanity.

Fredo's heart swelled with gratitude for Cale's acceptance and the revelation that his power had never truly been in his hair, but within himself.

He knew that from this moment on, he would rule not with fear of his secret but with the strength of his character.

The story of the Duke's baldness spread throughout the land, and soon enough, the vampires grew bolder in their own self-expression.

Wigs and hairpieces became a thing of the past, and the youth of the kingdom embraced the natural beauty of their scalps.

The bracelet remained on Fredo's wrist, a reminder of the lesson learned, but no longer a source of dread. Instead, it became a symbol of authenticity and courage.

And as the nights grew darker and the years rolled by, Fredo's reign grew more peaceful.

The whispers of the "hairless curse" turned into tales of the King's greatness, and the friendship between him and Cale grew stronger than ever.

Together, they brought light and warmth to the eternal night, proving that sometimes, the most powerful magic comes from being true to oneself.

A/N:

It wouldn't be Fredo if it wasn't overly dramatic, no?

Just a short one so that it has humorXD
