Dressing Down

Summary:

Ortegas didn't just try to prank Uhura before the captain's dinner; she also tried to trick her new second officer. Lucky for La'an, she had Una to clue her in.

Notes:

I'm just going to pretend that La'an was at the captain's dinner in "Children of the Comet." Because I think she should have been there.

Work Text:

The door chimed. "Come in," La'an called out.

Una stepped into La'an's room. "Hey, are you almost ready to go?" Then she stopped. "Hang on. Why are you wearing your dress uniform?"

"Why aren't you?"

Una tilted her head. "La'an, we're having ribs with the captain and a few members of the crew, not a banquet with the Federation President."

"Lieutenant Ortegas told me it was a formal event." La'an frowned. "It's not?"

Una shook her head. "Chris doesn't even wear his uniform most of the time. I swear, he has a special wardrobe just for family dinners."

"So I should change?" Una nodded and La'an sighed. She headed back to her closet, pulling off her dress shirt as she walked, and tossed it onto her bed. Then she grabbed a clean uniform from her closet and slipped it on. La'an turned to look at Una and spread her arms. "Better?"

"That's more like it," Una affirmed. "Let's go."

They left La'an's room and walked together towards the captain's quarters. Una noticed the thoughtful expression on La'an's face. "Hey, what's wrong?"

"I just don't get it," La'an said. "Why did Lieutenant Ortegas tell me to wear my dress uniform?"

"I think it was a practical joke."

"Hmm." La'an considered this, then shook her head. "I don't get it."

Una shrugged. "Some people like to put others in strange or uncomfortable situations so they can see how they react. It's not usually mean-spirited. I think Ortegas was just trying to include you."

"So I should reciprocate?" La'an asked.

"You don't have to," Una replied. "But it could be a good way of connecting with your new crewmates."

La'an considered this. "I'm going to tell Lieutenant Ortegas that she's on report for lying to a superior officer."

Una's eyes widened. "La'an, no."
