Don't You Breathe For Me

Work Text:

Jon wakes up, groggy and unfocused. His mouth is dry, his head hurts, his overgrown hair sticks to his face. He lifts his head and finds he has been sleeping face down on a book. Because he isn’t wearing his glasses, he has no idea what the book says or what it might be about.

“Mornin’.” A soft voice says from across the table.

Jon straightens up and feels a twinge in his back. Jesus, he really shouldn’t have fallen asleep like that. He still can’t see, and the voice isn’t quite familiar to him, so he says, “Where am I?”

The voice chuckles, and it’s then that Jon recognises it as his coworker, Tim. “Exactly where you were when you fell asleep an hour ago. The research library?”

“Right.” Jon fumbles around on the desk until he finds his glasses and puts them on. Tim’s smiling face comes into focus in front of him. The grogginess fades from Jon’s brain. “Why didn’t you wake me?”

“Because we’ve been working on this paper for days, and I don’t think you’ve slept much.” Tim shrugs. He pushes a cup of tea towards Jon. “I got you this, if you want to keep going.”

“Thanks.” Jon takes a sip of it. It’s okay. “Where did we get to?”

“Right, so-” Tim picks up a sheet of notes he has and starts reeling them off.

Jon sips his tea and listens intently, shaking off the last bits of sleepiness. He likes working with Tim - he’s a bit of a clown but he’s a hard worker. They get a lot done together. Maybe one day they’ll get to work on a bigger project than just this paper.
