Burned Empires?

Summary:

Seth thinks he's won the war...

Chapter Text

Seth Rollins had done it.

He had beaten both Roman Reigns and CM Punk in the same damn WrestleMania main event, and walked out as a god standing atop a pile of shattered legacies.

He had turned Paul Heyman, the so-called Wiseman, into his own personal mouthpiece. He'd made Heyman betray Roman during the match, stabbing the empire in the heart. Seth had outsmarted, outplayed, and outlasted two of wrestling’s biggest names.

The stage was his. The spotlights practically bent around him. Pyro, glory, adulation… He hadn't just won. He had ended eras.

Punk was mostly an afterthought. Seth had buried the man so deep in the dirt of irrelevance, he half-expected to get a thank-you letter from wrestling history. He didn’t care what Punk did next – crawl into commentary, shout on podcasts, fade into myth. The mission had been simple: bury him, and cross his fingers that it finally took.

But Roman was different.

Roman wasn’t just another opponent. He was the opponent. The final boss. The empire incarnate. Seth hadn’t just wanted to win, he had wanted to break him. To rip the Tribal Chief from his marble throne, shatter his aura, crush the myth under his boot. He wanted Roman Reigns to feel powerless, to drown in the same paranoia he’d once inflicted on everyone else. To claw at the walls while the empire he built crumbled around him.

But that... hadn't happened.

The Raw after Mania had come and gone, and with it, Seth had revealed Bron Breakker as the ace up his sleeve. The final nail in the Roman’s coffin. And it had worked to an extent, except the expected chaos, carnage and fire from the heavens hadn't come. Instead, there had been unnerving silence.

No Roman.

No Jey.

No Jimmy.

Seth had thought Roman was licking his wounds somewhere in the shadows. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike back with thunder and fury.

But no strike had come.

There were no vague, dimly-lit threats. No smoke and mirrors. No bloody beatdowns in dark hallways. At this point, Seth would take crimson warnings smeared across locker room walls with blood.

Hell, the last time he had laid eyes on Roman Reigns, the man had looked... content. As if he knew something Seth didn’t. As if he was free.

And that had unsettled Seth more than any steel chair ever could.

Something felt off, and he couldn’t put his finger on it. Roman Reigns just didn’t vanish, didn’t retreat. He didn’t accept defeat. He was the Head of the Table, the unbeatable cornerstone of WWE’s modern mythology.

So where the hell was he?

Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes had started popping up backstage like the lost fourth Uso. Always hovering around Sami Zayn, Jimmy, and Jey. Laughing at inside jokes, and smiling like he was running for prom king. It should have felt suspicious, Cody didn’t even have a match booked half the time. But no one questioned it. Cody was WWE’s boy scout, after all. The platinum-plated superhero trying to cosplay 2009 John Cena in 2025.

He seemed to be handling his loss to Cena a little too well, honestly. Recovering sooner than anyone had a right to recover from a loss that embarrassing.

And then there was Randy.

Unhinged, smug, always lurking Randy Orton. With his predatory calm and that unnerving half-smile. He kept orbiting Cody like a vulture that couldn’t decide if it wanted to flirt or feed. Always behind him, always so near. Passing Cody little snacks like a high schooler with love notes and then vanishing before anyone could ask what the hell he was doing.

Cody, of course, was blissfully oblivious. Blinking, smiling, and completely confused as to why Randy was staring at him like he was a particularly difficult puzzle.

Seth watched all of it. A one man audience to the backstage soap opera that was, Cody and Randy: the accidental rom-com.

It was entertaining.

But underneath the amusement, Seth was still stewing.

Because he had done everything right. He had lined up the chessboard, flipped the pieces, played the game better than anyone.

And still… Roman didn’t bite.

There was no revenge arc. No blood feud. Just nothing.

And the silence wasn’t just loud. It was strategic.

It made Seth feel like he’d won the battle, but missed the real war. Like he had stormed the castle only to realize the king had already slipped out through the back gate, still holdng the real crown.

Then one night, walking past catering, Seth heard something.

Sami, Jey, and Jimmy murmuring in that tone that made it sound like they weren’t trying to hide anything but absolutely were. Half-laughing, half-watching their own backs while talking just low enough for plausible deniability.

Seth caught pieces.

"They think they're subtle," Sami chuckled.

"Roman's always been good at keeping secrets tho’," Jey added.

"But Cody? Man's as transparent as glass," Jimmy laughed.

Seth's ears perked up. He leaned in trying to catch more but the trio walked off, leaving him with more questions than answers.

He didn’t confront them. Didn’t call it out. He just kept walking, while his mid spun.

There was something big there.

He didn’t have the full picture, but he didn’t need it to know one thing: Roman wasn’t hiding. Roman was waiting. And worse he wasn’t alone.

The Tribal Chief hadn’t been dethroned. He had abdicated.

And Seth Rollins, self-declared architect of the fall, had the creeping realization that he might have just cleared the way for something far more dangerous.

Something sneakier and quieter.

And it might just be wrapped in blonde hair, star-spangled ring gear, and the all-American grin of Cody Rhodes himself.

Seth smiled. But it wasn’t joy.

It was the kind of smile a man wore when he was halfway through a maze and suddenly realized the walls were closing in.

He had won. But now, he wasn’t sure what it was he’d won at all.
