Maomao drifted on the edge of sleep. After so long away from the drafty shack where her father had raised her, she almost feared that she would wake up in the Jade Pavilion, still dreaming of her father and her sisters and even the old hag.
It was a foolish fear, but no matter how she scolded herself, proper sleep still evaded her.
A swish of fabric to her right preceded the gentle weight of her father’s hand on her forehead. “Rest, Maomao.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. No promises, just his presence.
Soon enough, she fell asleep.
