in our dreams (we love)

Summary:

Damian's just trying to turn in his final art project, not be accused of plagiarism. It's not like two people can have the same dreams… right?

Notes:

This is for day two of DamiRaeWeek! Nanda Parbat is the prompt! <3 Definitely ended up being longer than planned... so expect more chapters. I'm thinking three at most, but for now, it's shrouded in mystery!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Damian is in pure shock.

No, seriously, he is.

All he had been doing was working on his project for his Art class. They had to draw what they dreamed, take that inspiration and create something on a canvas for their final project.

Here he is.

Standing in front of his professor.

And there's a raven haired gorgeous woman standing next to him with her arms crossed and an arched brow aimed at their professor.

"Can you tell me how two students, that I have never seen interact and aren't in the same class, painted the same temple with the same name for a project that I assigned?" asks Professor Nata as she stares at them, eyes glancing between them in a narrowed dance of suspicion.

"I don't know, Professor Na, but I guarantee it wasn't plagiarism," huffs the raven haired beauty next to him.

Damian has to shake himself out of the drooling happening in his head when their professor turns to him.

"I've never spoken to her, so I definitely didn't copy her. I don't know what to tell you, Professor Nata," replies Damian gently as he tilts his head to the side, confusion shrugging his shoulders to keep his innocent image in place.

Professor Nata is the only professor who still believes him to be this innocent quiet kid because the other professors have danced on his nerves so much that they figured out what a true gremlin the Wayne's are because of it.

"Well, then I guess you will have to redo this assignment. You will draw something new based on your dreams tonight, and you will present it to me in two days time. I expect to see something different," says Professor Nata firmly before she turns and waltzes out of the classroom, dragging their canvases out with her.

"How did you draw the same thing that I did?"

Damian turns with an arched brow at the pointed question filled with irritation.

"I don't know considering I've never even seen you before," replies Damian with an annoyed tone before he hikes the strap of his bag across his chest and walks around the woman. "See you in two days, I guess. Try to have some originality this time."

"I only draw originals!"

Her voice follows him out, and he mentally drags himself off of a cliff for being such a dick to her. But this is weird, and he knows it can't be a coincidence.

He's a Wayne.

They don't believe in coincidences.

But the only thing that makes any sort of sense is a fairy tale that he doesn't believe in.

No matter what his idiot brothers think.

Damian knows it's not true.

Soulmates aren't real.

The rest of the day though, the thought pesters him in the back of his mind. It nudges him with a smirk, reminding him at every turn that it's there.

But Damian refuses to give it any credence, until he runs into Jon at their dorms.

"Dami! You won't believe this, but I met my soulmate today!" exclaims Jon as he comes into their shared room, falling breathlessly onto his bed.

"Soulmates aren't real," mutters Damian with an eye roll, irritated that the topic has made its way back to him yet again.

"Yes, they are! Ma and Pa are soulmates, Dami! Did you not know that?" Jon sounds so confused that Damian actually has to look at him to gauge whether he's being genuine.

But he is.

"No, I didn't know that because I don't believe Soulmates are real. I have no proof, so why would I?" Damian tilts his head to the side, brows furrowed as he looks at his long-time best friend.

"Dami, what?" Jon looks to be at a loss, but then he tugs out his phone. The next thing Damian knows, he's face to face with Lois as Jon starts himself on a rant. "Dami doesn't believe in soulmates! And somehow, he doesn't know how you and dad are soulmates. You have to help me convince him that they're real because I totally met mine today, and I need Dami to meet him. But if he doesn't believe in soulmates, he'll tell me I'm being stupid!"

"Oh, well, I can definitely explain how Clark and I figured it out. But I don't know if that will help," says Lois with an amused smile as she seems to settle back on their couch. "I had a dream about a story that I needed to pursue, and it gave me a new angle to search out. So, the next morning, I find myself staring face to face with Clark as he went to check out a new spot that gave him a weird feeling. He said he'd dreamed about coming to this place but didn't understand why because he had never even been in that part of town. It was a weird thing, until we discussed the dreams and realized that we were soulmates. Our souls tugged us to the same place that would change our lives in more ways than one. Clark met his brother there twenty minutes after I broke the story that rocketed my career into the stratosphere. And we met each other there and decided to pursue what our souls were begging for."

Damian sat with that information while Lois turned her attention to Jon and told him to give her all the details about meeting his soulmate.

His mind spins.

His art piece had been from a dream. He'd dreamed up this place that he knew meant something to his family, Damian recognized it the minute he saw it.

So, the question is… How did she know about it? How did she pick up on those details?

The questions are going to bug him, he knows that, but for now, he's content to listen to Jon.

Damian will get his answers later, he can guarantee it.
