Cha Eui-jae remembered this day vividly. A moment in his life he treasures and keeps close to his heart. A warm memory to help him endure during the bad times.

It was Cha Eui-jae’s first day off in months, and with Lee Sa-young’s improving health, he thought it was finally time to fulfill his promise. Cha Eui-jae had been planning for it since he felt a small warmth weakly wrap around his pinky in acceptance. Something that he painstakingly prepared for in the background so when the opportunity came, he would take it.

The night before, Cha Eui-jae couldn’t sleep. He was too excited and anxious for the morning, so when the clock of their nightstand read 5 am he decided to get everything ready. Sparing one last look at Sa-young’s sleeping face he quietly got dressed and headed out to pack their car with a blanket, sun umbrella, and food for later.

Finishing earlier than expected, Cha Eui-jae crept back upstairs and slipped into their bed. He took this chance to enjoy the calm warmth with Lee Sa-young. The younger man was still slumbering away, black strands messier than usual fanning out on the pillow beneath him. Pink lips parted and mumbled incoherently as eyes shifted under closed lids in a dream.

So lost in the comforting moment, Cha Eui-jae nearly forgot the time. He almost didn’t want to wake Sa-young up, but Cha Eui-jae knew the other man would tease him relentlessly if he didn’t.

Softly rousing the other man into wakefulness, his heart took a hit as a face still clouded from dreams gave him a gentle smile. He resisted the urge to wrap them back up in their sheets and stay there, but Cha Eui-jae had to fulfill his promise.

Rolling them out of bed, Cha Eui-jae helped Sa-young get ready before guiding the groggy man into the passenger seat. He gave one last check for everything before setting off to their promised destination.

He began driving to the sea.

However, the bubbly feeling of excitement sank as they approached the coast, catching sight of grey clouds looming over the horizon. Cha Eui-jae bit his lip, hoping that the clouds would clear before they arrived.

His hopes were dashed as each kilometer passed and the sky remained overcast even as the car rolled to a stop at their destination. He withheld a sigh as he stared through the windshield at the stubborn clouds, glaring at them as if to make them disappear. For a moment, the thought occurred to him that he could probably make it possible. Just one swipe of something flat and he can clear the sky.

Just as quickly as it came, he got rid of the thought. What an irresponsible thought.

Besides, if he did that, people would notice and come running to find the cause. They might even think it was a monster and close the beach.

Day ruined.

Tapping the steering wheel agitatedly, he decided to accept this small hiccup. They could still have a good time. Surely.

Opening his door and stepping out of the car, Cha Eui-jae was met with the biting chill of the ocean breeze brushing through his hair and swiping his cheek. Gritting his teeth, Cha Eui-jae wanted to curse but was quickly distracted by the sound of a car door closing. Looking over, he found Sa-young quickly moving, undeterred by the frigid wind or gloomy sky.

Cha Eui-jae moved to follow Lee Sa-young, who was already walking toward the beach. Lee Sa-young only paused for a moment to take Cha Eui-jae’s hand in his before making his way toward the water. The waves crashed loudly, the cover of the clouds making the water darker and uninviting.

Looking out to the horizon, Cha Eui-jae fought the disappointment filling his chest. Even when he was fighting a giant sea monster, Cha Eui-jae couldn’t help but be enamored by the sea. The sun above was warm to help with the cold of the water. He remembers how the sun hit the sea just so to reflect a beautiful swirling blue.

At the time, Cha Eui-jae was surprised to find something so wonderful in the bleakness of his new reality. He was hoping to share this wonder with Lee Sa-young.

But in these conditions, it wasn’t the same.

“Sa-young-ah. I’m sor-”

“Hyung, look.” Cha Eui-jae felt a gentle tug on his hand. He turned his eyes from the sea to find Lee Sa-young pointing to the sky. Above them, gloomy clouds were beginning to part, allowing soft rays of light to filter through.

Though Cha Eui-jae paid it little mind.

He was too distracted by the image of Lee Sa-young.

In front of him, Lee Sa-young was smiling. His dark eyes formed gently sloping crescents, and his lips softly curved in a lovely shape. The other man was half turned to him, his outstretched hand still holding his and providing a comforting warmth that ran through his body. The wind mussed the taller man’s dark strands as the sun shone behind him, outlining his visage like a halo. Cha Eui-jae felt his cheeks grow warm from something other than the sunlight touching his face.

Cha Eui-jae could only stare. Knowing in his heart, he found another beautiful thing in this world.

The younger man must have noticed his distracted gaze as a beautiful laugh escaped full lips, startling Cha Eui-jae out of his trance. His momentary embarrassment at being caught was quickly replaced by an overwhelming heat as Cha Eui-jae listened to the wonderful sound.

How foolish was he to think that a few clouds could ruin this?

Because any moment with his only success, a moment with Lee Sa-young, was a wonderful gift.
