Summary:

Jiang Cheng shifts again, and then his hand is tentatively brushing against Wei Wuxian's, before he quietly links their fingers together. "You are so weird."

Work Text:

(Where and as what will the two of us, you, one so warm, and me, one so tender, meet again?)

"I don’t see the point in this," Jiang Cheng mutters, but he still lets himself be dragged by the hand while Wei Wuxian leads them to his strange little section of field.

Wei Wuxian just rolls his eyes, yanking Jiang Cheng down onto the ground with him. "And I don't see the point in sneaking fish from one lake to another. Just because you thought they would get lonely. "

Jiang Cheng shoots up and looks down at him, pointing a finger in his face. "It was not because of that! That lake was way too cold and—"

"The point," Wei Wuxian interrupts, "is that I thought it was weird, but I still went with you. I still snuck them out with you. I got hit in the face with a fish, A-Cheng."

With only the light from the moon, Jiang Cheng’s face was barely visible, but as he lay back down, Wei Wuxian could see his face again. He was pouting, and his fingers twitched with the urge to pinch his cheeks.

"I said sorry for that," he grumbles, "It's just..."

And as Wei Wuxian waits for him to find his words, he shifts closer until they're basically plastered together, sides shoved against each other. It's a warm and humid night, but he doesn’t mind, so long as he can spend it with Jiang Cheng.

At this point, Jiang Cheng would've pushed him away, but something must be in the air, since he only curls minutely closer.

"What’s the point of stargazing when it's this hot? I can barely think!" Jiang Cheng says. He doesn't reply, but watches while Jiang Cheng stares up at the glimmering dots with a scrunched nose, before his hand moves to point at a small cluster of stars.

"If you connect those stars, don’t they look like a cloud?" He mutters. Wei Wuxian fails to stifle his laugh into his sleeve, giggling while Jiang Cheng shoves at him.

"If we’re following that logic then…" he laughed, wheezing, and pointing up at another cluster, "That one makes a bun!"

Jiang Cheng snorts, "That's stupid. Buns are circles, so that's too easy." He points out another set of stars, tracing them with his finger. "That one kind of looks like a rabbit."

Wei Wuxian follows his finger, but not without complaining, "Ah, Jiang Cheng, you're seriously so strict."

He points out a shape right next to the rabbit, smiling when Jiang Cheng looks at him with a raised brow. "That one's a cat, and I think it's a sign."

He waits patiently for Jiang Cheng to grow annoyed, finally asking, "A sign of what?" before he quickly plants a sloppy kiss on his cheek. Predictably, Jiang Cheng cringes back, wiping at his face harshly.

"A sign that we'll be together forever, of course." He says, matter-of-factly. "You're the cat, and I'm the rabbit, and since they're so close to each other, that means we'll be just as close. A pair!"

Scoffing, Jiang Cheng doesn't respond, but his response is obvious in the way he leans back into Wei Wuxian's space, tipping his head back to follow along with the shapes Wei Wuxian traces.

Quickly, he grows bored of making up shapes, and hums. "Let's forget about the stars," he says. "Neither of us have lessons tomorrow, and the breeze feels good. Isn’t it nice, just lying here doing nothing?"

"You dragged me out of my nice, comfortable, soft bed just to get bored?" Jiang Cheng says, raising a hand and gesturing towards the sky. He settles though, and murmurs, "It’s not like it's going anywhere, I guess."

Moments pass by, and Wei Wuxian watches as Jiang Cheng's blinks grow slower and slower, and he starts slumping more into his side. He pokes him with a finger, whispering, "Hey, you can fall asleep if you want. I don’t mind sleeping under the stars."

Jiang Cheng shifts again, and then his hand is tentatively brushing against Wei Wuxian's, before he quietly links their fingers together. "You are so weird."

"We’re pretty well-matched then," Wei Wuxian replies with a teasing grin, squeezing Jiang Cheng’s hand.

Notes:

title is from eileen chang's essay "love"
"Among all the thousands of people you meet, in all the thousands of years, in the boundless wilderness of time, there is no ‘behind’, and no ‘ahead’, there is only coincidental catching up, [and in such moments] there are no other words to say, only a gentle question: “Oh, you’re here too?”

quote at the beginning is from “in the night” by kim gwangseop
Among a multitude of stars,
one stares down at me.
Among a multitude of people,
I stare up at that one star.
As the night grows deeper,
it fades into brightness
and I disappear into darkness.
Where and as what
will the two of us…
you, one so warm, and me, one so tender,
meet again?

kind of awkward since i havent written a proper fic in actual years lol...
