    Summary

Mike thought again about that night, how Will had looked at him like he was taking a visual inventory, trying to memorize it all in case it never happened again. Having that intense, yearning effect over Will was amazing. What would he do if Will didn’t want him that way anymore? And what if it wasn’t really about that at all?
For a second, a terrifying thought occurred to Mike — what if it’s just different with him?
    ---
In December of 1995, Mike Wheeler and his band, The Swinging Party, are on their first big headlining tour of North America. At their sold out show in New York City, Mike nurses his pained shoulder and receives a surprise visit from his estranged best friend (call it that if you want), Will Byers. Mike spends the following day in the city, killing time and partaking in his habits before he "catches up" with Will in the evening.
Memories return. Mistakes and misdoings haunt the narrative. Potential for new beginnings arise.

What would he do if Will didn’t want him that way anymore? And what if it wasn’t really about that at all? For a second, a terrifying thought occurred to Mike — what if it’s just different with him?

All the times they almost didn’t make it, and all the times they made it back to each other again. There had been fights and there had been distance, but there was always that — that feeling of coming home.

And then, either because of the weed or the euphoria, Mike saw a taste of what home for years to come would look like. Over Will’s features he saw what he’d look like a year from now, then when he was thirty, then when he was graying at the temples, then when he was a wrinkled old man, and finally, when he was laid to rest. It was arresting; it was catastrophic.

So, teary-eyed and clawing at his chest, Mike finally said aloud:

    “I love you, Will.”

    Summary

All this time, he’d thought El was penance, for his failure to protect Will. That being with her was atonement, for wanting the wrong things, for feeling the wrong way. But it hadn’t helped— Will kept leaving. And El did, too. Mike keeps losing people, and nothing he does brings them back.

Each time Mike thinks of Will, he feels the weight of cosmic responsibility.

He's doesn't know what he feels for Will anymore. But he knows for certain that it isn't allowed.

non-linear series retrospective, from mike's perspective. (aka: the mike pov we all deserved)

Of course he loves Will. Of course, he's loved Will all along. There was never any doubt about it. But now, he understands; this isn't love in the same way he loves anyone else. This isn't the kind of love that can be recreated, or sought after anywhere else. The love he feels for Will is infinite, endless. Permanent, in a way few things truly are.

    Summary

Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.

From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.

This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.

will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

"When," Will corrects instantly. "We're going to find you, Mike. I'm going to find you and I'm going to bring you home."

The way Mike smiles at him is worn down, thin, like someone placating a child who is talking about impossible dreams. It makes Will bristle, makes him want to insist, to shake Mike by his shoulders and make it clear—but before he can, Mike softly says, "Of all the Will's I've seen so far, you're the one that feels the most real."

    Summary

"Sometimes, I think about you on top of me," Will says slowly, tracing Mike’s knuckles with his thumb. "And sometimes I think about me on top of you."

Mike says, "Oh." Then nothing else.

    "Um," Will says. "Your turn."

"I—uh." Mike is looking down. Can’t look at Will. "I mostly think about. You. Um, on top of me."

Will’s mind goes completely, sparklingly blank.

OR: Will puts on a little muscle for the apocalypse, and Mike is normal about it.

He was afraid of everything, except loving Will. That should have scared him most of all, but it was the first thing he could remember.
