One Last Happy Memory (Bucky Barnes X Reader)

Summary:

Another one. Because why would I be allowed to finish what I started, haha. I loved writing this though. It was kinda fun experimenting with the 1940s era version of Bucky.

Work Text:

It was 1941 and a week before Bucky was meant to leave for the military. You hadn’t wanted him to go, he was your closest friend and more recently your boyfriend. He’d spent the last week with you, hoping that maybe it would soothe the ache of letting him leave. You already knew that Bucky had been drafted and that it wasn’t a request that he could simply decline so that he could move on with his life.

At the same time, you also knew that Bucky would have never chosen to reject the offer anyway, his best friend enlisted in the military and you already knew that Bucky would run after Steve no matter what. You knew that Bucky was protective over the Brooklyn Chihuahua and that he would do anything to keep him from getting himself killed. It was a quality that made you fall so hard for Bucky. He was more caring and sweet than he let on to most and he wanted to protect those he cared about.

“Buck, what are you doing?”you laughed as he held his hand over your eyes and led you down the street.
“You’ll see when we get there, I promise.”
“I can’t see anything right now.”

Bucky’s laugh came from behind you as he finally stopped walking and uncovered your eyes. He had led you to a small gazebo that had christmas lights strung across the pillars and wrapped around them like glowing spirals. You grinned like a little kid as you turned around to face your boyfriend.

“What’s all this?”you ask.
“Hopefully a happy memory. I didn’t want these two weeks to be all doom and gloom.”Bucky replied, taking your hand in his and kissing your knuckles.
“It’s never all bad with you, I promise.”
“I know you say that. But I can see it in your eyes, you’re terrified. But I promise you this won’t be the last good thing we get.”

He wrapped his arm around your waist gently and began to sway you around the small gazebo, singing a love song softly in your ear as the two of you moved around fluidly. You closed your eyes and allowed him to lead you. If this was the last good moment that the two of you got to have, you weren’t going to ruin it by arguing with him about how badly you wanted him to stick around, even if the only person he was staying for was you.
