Work Text:

Goggles stands in the doorway at the kitchen of him and Specs' shared apartment, rubbing his face in an exhausted manner. The other blue inkling is scribbling on some papers, mumbling something to himself. Goggles cannot bring himself to care, but if he had enough of one thing it was Specs' constant mumbling over...well, everything in general.

Not that it annoys him though. The goofy inkling loves the spectacled inkling's rambles about various stuff, loves how his face lights up in such a way while explaining stuff Goggles may or may not forgets a while later.

But he isn't having it today. His rambles doesn't annoy him, for sure, but the eyebags and the constant frowning on his eyebrows does. Annoys him, and concerns him deeply. Specs is already an inkling who is 7/24 on fight or flight mode all the damn time. One of the very few places he can actually sit down and relax is their house. But because of this...whole thing, he isn't able to do that anymore. (Goggles honestly forgot what it was but he would love to have a nice friendly chat with whoever got Specs like this: a ball of stress ready to explode at any moment.)

So he walks toward the kitchen table where his boyfriend is sitting at, and simply hooks his arms through the other's armpits. Specs lets out a shriek and protests, tries to fight against the slightly taller inkling, but his efforts fail due to how fatigued he is.

"C'mon," Goggles mumbles as he carries him away, flails of the other ignored. This used to be Headphones' job, dragging her teammates away from everything. But she isn't here, and Goggles isn't the lazy reckless teen he used to be. At first glance, people think he's the slacker and Specs is the one who drags him away from everything and takes care of him. Well, it has some truth to it. Sure, there are many, many instances where Specs dragged Goggles away from bunch of bullshit. But in the aspect of taking care? They both care for each other, perhaps Goggles more than Specs because of the surprising amount of self-destructive habits the captain has. It doesn't seem like it to the public eye as he appeared well-put together, but Goggles knows Specs better than anyone.

So he will get him to rest tonight. No buts, none of that. He will find a way, it's all on his mind. He ignores the others' protests and his grip under his arms moves to his waist swiftly and holds him as tight as possible, because Goggles knows Specs has the reflexes of a sailfish (seriously, he lost the count of the amount of times the guy escaped from his grasp when he was dragging him away from his work).

"Goggles put me down for fuck's sake–"

"Nope," he says, popping the 'p'. He gets in their bedroom, and throws himself into the bed, along with his boyfriend in his death grip. He doesn't have to pull up the already thin covers, as it's a nice hot summer night. Specs wriggles in his grasp a bit more, grunting before (finally) what seems to be give in. Maybe he gave up, or he was too exhausted, but it doesn't matter as Goggles lets out a exhale of relief before nuzzling into his boyfriend's hair.

"Finally."

Specs lets out a sigh and starts speaking, words muffled. "I need to finish those, Goggles."

"Do you really?" The said-inkling says without moving his chin from the other's head.

"Well yeah, they need to be finished this week–"

"Are they due tomorrow?"

Silence.

"...no."

"Which day of the week?"

"S...sunday."

"Specs, it's Tuesday."

"I know but–" The other inkling stammers, struggling to find words. "I...wanted to finish it early..."

"I know you like finishing it early, but this is taking a toll on you baby," Goggles moves his head away from the top of Specs' head and looks at him in the eyes as he mutters in a soft tone, using the rare pet name he calls the other with. "Maybe finish it a bit late this time? I promise I won't bother you during that. But now, please, please rest."

After looking at him for a few seconds that felt like hours to Goggles, Specs looks away from his eyes and mutters out a reluctant "fine".

Bingo.

"That's my man," Goggles says happily, a smile taking its place on his face as his death grip on the other leaves its place for a hug instead. Specs buries his face on the crook of his neck and wraps his arms around his chest, Goggles lets out a soft giggle with a kiss on the other's head as both close their eyes.

Right about time Goggles can drift into the land of dreams, he feels his boyfriend shift in his place. He feels the pair of arms retracting, as he opens his eyes to Specs with his hands on his face facing the ceiling.

"Speccy?" Goggles whines, tone groggy. The other doesn't give an answer, as Goggles' concern grows.

"Specs? You okay?" He asks, dropping the nickname.

"Fine, 'm fine, it's just..." The inkling-in-question drags his hands away from his eyes as he sits up, Goggles following in suit. "I can't really sleep."

"Hm? Are you not tired?"

"No, I am, it's– uh...I'm not used to take breaks from my work, when I sit down I do it all at once. Because it's like I'm gonna forget something I was in the middle of because I left it and it's gonna be worse than it already is but I don't wanna make you worried because you have every right to worry but this is eating me from inside and I cannot just sleep it off like you can and–"

Specs stops his ranting to take several shaky breaths, not noticing how his hands moves to grip his arms and curles in towards himself.

Goggles doesn't do anything, except for slowly making a move towards to pry the other's hands away from digging his claws more into his skin. He holds the spectacled inkling's hands, thumbs brushing on the back of his hands.

"I understand," Goggles mumbles as he lifts Specs' hands to his lips, leaving a soft kiss on the calloused surface. "I know you're worried you might not be able to remember something important."

He lays his forehead on the other's, as he continues. "But I don't want you to overwork yourself. Besides, you can do your work much better when you're well rested, hm?"

A few seconds pass before a grumble. "...I suppose."

Goggles smiles at Specs' reluctant but accepting side glance. He moves his hand to his cheek, feeling Specs leaning in to the touch with a sigh as he looks at Goggles' eyes.

"Also, maybe you will remember it, maybe you will look at one of the papers and you will be like 'ah!' Who knows?" Goggles continues, "but what I know is that sometimes you gotta let go of the plans for a while."

Specs lets out a chuckle, before mumbling an "ok". Goggles feels his hand moving from his cheek to his chin, slowly guiding the other towards his lips as he leans in. Specs closes his eyes before Goggles closes the gap between them, moving his hand back to his cheek with his thumb brushing the surface softly.

Specs moves his arms to let them lazily hang on Goggles' shoulders, as he feels a pair of hands being dropped around his waist. The duo stays like that for a few minutes without moving from their spot. The kiss is nothing really, just a small peck perhaps, compared to their other kisses.

Goggles sways on his spot while holding Specs, slowly guiding both of them to lay back down on the bed. The spectacled inkling feels a few more specks on the sides of his lips, as the other peppers him in more kisses while muttering out praises. Goggles holds himself up by putting his arm on the pillow right next to Specs' head, slowly lifting himself to leave kisses on the neck of his captain. Specs lets out a muffled laugh in return, knowing Goggles did that on purpose just to make him giggle.

Goggles lifts his head from the other's neck, to kiss him on the lips again. A soft one again, but also a bit more intimate unlike the previous kiss. Goggles hears Specs letting out a content hum, as he smiles to the kiss and taking the sound of his boyfriend like the sweetest desert he has ever eaten. Even sweeter than that. The kiss lasts for a little, Goggles' free hand brushing the cheek of the other. He feels a hand from the pair of arms around his neck playing with his own hair and a thumb on his ear, toying with the little silver earring. He's glad Specs is actually letting his guard down and relaxing, letting Goggles spoil him. Because the inkling is more than happy to do that, he loves spoiling his loved ones (a nice habit taken after his grandma).

Goggles parts just a little to get some air, eyes locked onto Specs.

"How are you feeling?" He mumbles, elbows on the either side of the other's torso.

"Dunno."

"Do you want to work right now?" Goggles asks. He knows the other will probably deny it, but he wants to test it. If he says yes, Goggles will try another tactic to keep him from his work because nope!

"No, not really."

Gotcha.

"Great to hear," Goggles gives one more kiss to the other's nose.

Next day, Specs wakes up to an empty bed and a sun that is too high up in the sky for his own liking. The smell of something hits his nose, along with humming from the kitchen. He puts his namesake on as he trudges towards there, first thing he sees being his work carefully tucked aside the table in a neat manner.

"Mornin'!" Goggles chirps from his place in front of the cooker in a singsong tone. "You slept quite a lot, man!"

"I did?.." Specs walks next to him and leans on the counter, elbows on the marble surface.

"Yup! It's almost noon. That's a great thing, to be honest!" Goggles says with a grin as he put whatever he was cooking on the plates he set out. "Now take a seat! I've made omelette, in your favorite way."

As they eat, Specs' eyes trails towards his work sitting at the corner of the table, the paper on top in particular catching his attention.

Wait a minute...

"Gogs– you were right," he says, feeling a smile forming on his face.

"Wuh?" Goggles perks up, mouth full.

"The thing you said about remembering stuff if I look at it in the morning," Specs lets out a laugh, "not only that I remember it exactly but maybe even better!"

Goggles claps his hands as he lets out a muffled joyful whoop.

"Now I..." Specs makes a move towards the paper, before Goggles leaning forward and grabbing his hand away from the stack before he could grab it.

Goggles swallows as he stares in a uncharacteristic deadpan way to Specs' eyes.

"Finish your food first."

Specs sheepishly nods.
