Work Text:
The blond dropped his head on his pillow and softly closed his eyes, leaving the window open to regulate the californian heat that built up in his room. He grimaced slightly as an annoying pattern of leaves shuffling outside reached his ears, only getting louder as the night passed by. He was already exhausted from band practice and just running errands all day, when he got back home he almost forgot to change into something that’ll keep him slightly cooler for the night before he crashed onto his bed. Tomorrow was probably going to be the same, the only difference was that he was supposed to be up early to check out a new venue for his next gig. Leaves rustled again, he figured it was just the wind and went back to his comfortable position, falling between the lines of awake and asleep with ease.
That noise again. It was louder. He opened his eyelids slightly to see a blurry image of his digital clock that sat on his nightstand. Barely able to read, he figured only a couple minutes passed by since the noise started. Maybe it was some sort of small animalI messing around on his lawn. He laid back as it was already late when he got in bed, only getting later now, he couldn’t afford wasting any more seconds of sleep. He grunted and gripped his blanket harder as he shifted his position again, nuzzling his nose against the fluffy surface of the pillow.
Those damn leaves. The way James was sleeping, he had his back facing the wide open window, figuring that, by his logic, if there really was someone out on his lawn, he wouldn’t see them and they wouldn’t see him so nothing could really happen to him. Though his thesis eased his mind in some way or another, he couldn’t help but have a hard time to shake off this eerie suspicion that crept larger and larger against his back. As he fought the uncomfortable atmosphere that these stupid leaves created, a shadow slowly climbed inside his room, white knuckles gripping at the still of James’ window, gently stumbling inside his room.
James heard faint steps approaching his bed and figured that it was a person from the way they sounded, James’ brows furrowed as a strange knot made it’s way inside his stomach, scents of alcohol and decisions of not using deodorant that rose inside his nostrils only made it worse. The person creeped further, trying to accomplish the almost impossible task to be silent in the dead of night. The boy’s body was deeply sunk in his mattress making him feel paralyzed in some weird way, though his laziness to get up could be making him feel like that too. A heavy gulp came from him as he tried to calm his minds and go back to his previous dormant state.
James held his breath and clenched his eyelids, scrunching up his nose in the process as this human crawled slowly inside his bed. Careful movements followed along until he could feel this body of heat just staring down at him, kneeled on his bed, just a few inches away from him. An urge to rapidly open his eyes and grab this weirdo by their neck came to James but as he thought about it, he figured that the sight of a stranger's face preying on him would send him into a state of unimaginable shock.
James’ breath hitched as long cold arms snaked around his torso slowly and a familiar face shoved into his shoulder blades. As fear overcame the tiredness he figured that it was now or never, he turned over slightly, his eyes turned wide as they noticed a big ball of orange hair shuffling around behind him.
Huh?
He turned fully over whilst rubbing his eyes awake, trying to make up his mind whether this was real or not. Dave, his guitarist, was laid innocently faced down on his bed, groaning as his arms slid from the blond’s torso.
“Why’d you do that..” The ginger's voice was slurred and quiet, different from the usual, he lifted his head slowly to meet James’ blue and tired eyes which made a small dumb smile creep onto his lips.
James stared at his friend for a while, taking in his features. His nose, eyes, and lips were more blushed than before, along with those he quickly noticed his somewhat puffy cheeks. He reached his hand slowly to Dave’s messy hair and gently caressed it back. He couldn’t help but wonder what had happened to him, last time he saw him was only a couple hours ago at band practice and he seemed fine.
“Do what?” The blond gave him a weird look before sitting back on his elbows, knitting his brows as he watched the ginger in front of him try to find a way with words. Dave stuttered for a while as he slowly sat up to be on eye level with James. “Yer turned around.” Wet strands of hair fell onto the pale skin of his forehead.
James took a deep breath and that's when the scent of alcohol that he ignored previously started aching at his nostrils. He quickly realized what state Dave was in and tiredly got out of bed. The blond went to his kitchen and fetched Dave a glass of cold water, making sure that he made it pretty quick he set the glass on his nightstand and crawled back on his bed, this time him staring down at the ginger who was laid out on his ped like some kind of pretty painting.
“You’ll love it when I tell you about this in the morning.” James mumbled to himself as he reached to get off Dave's shoes, slowly making his way to his belt, then jeans. He left him in his underwear and shirt and passed him the glass of water. Dave gave him a weak smile as he gulped the entire thing in seconds leaving James a little worried. He put the ginger back in bed and got in next to him.
The feeling of the cold water washing Dave’s throat eased his discomfort slightly though an aching burn still remained in the pits of his stomach. He gripped his abdomen then laid his head next to James’ as flashes of his regretful actions came back to his mind as he realized truly how drunk he was. He took in his natural smell as he tried getting his firm arms around the blond’s waist. James gasped again, “What are you doing?” before putting Dave’s arms back in his own personal space. “You’re such a dick.” Dave groaned and pushed his head into the pillow.
Dave shoved James’ shoulder, feeling a headache form past his temples, temperature rising more inside his body. James’ brows turned into a frown at the ginger’s words, stinging more than they probably should’ve. They both stared for a while, taking in the sight of their bodies laid down in the same bed, close enough to be feeling the radiating heat from each other. The blond reached his hand out hesitantly to his bandmate's shoulder, caressing it mindlessly as he slowly pushed him back on the mattress.
Dave took a deep breath as his head fell onto the pillow again, officially losing all his energy to argue back and just accepted his defeat. “Missed you.” You could barely make out what he said as his face was so squished against the pillow but his tone spoke clearer than any words could. A hint of yearning, satisfaction, Dave shifted slowly as warmth enveloped him. James pulled the blanket over them and turned around to face him, “Sure you did, sleep now.”, he chuckled quietly.
The blond finally allowed Dave’s arms around his body, regretting that he didn't let do this before. As time of the night passed right by them, they both realized how comfortable this was. Dave slowly reached his head in the crook of James' shoulder and started placing gentle, sloppy kisses on it. James shivered at the feeling, he couldn’t deny that he loved how this felt but he shoved that feeling deep down though the fond smile on his face couldn’t fool anyone.
James’ hand crawled up to the ginger’s soft curls, trying to ignore the fact that some strands were drenched in sweat, he gave his scalp a soft squeeze and fell asleep knowing that he was probably gonna miss checking out the venue he had his eyes on.
