Summary
Roman Calignione is ten years old, bruised knuckles, and very certain that Daisy Kim's adoptive brothers are the worst people alive. It’s bad enough that his father forces him to socialize with them—but when Daniel Albrecht sneers that Daisy is nothing but a "mutt" to be married off, Roman’s fist meets his jaw. The aftermath is swift; a shattered party, a furious father, and Roman exiled to a gilded parlor—until Daisy slips in, presses a clumsy kiss to his split lip, and proposed to him.

“If you wait for me, I’ll marry you. One day. When we’re older.”
“But you have to be strong—like, stronger than… hmm.” She scrunched her nose. “Wait, no—not as strong as Jesus. Nobody’s that strong. But close! Because Jesus is perfect, and I do wanna marry someone like him—strong arms, kind eyes, all that. And, well—” Her cheeks flushed. “He probably had abs. Carpentry’s hard work! Not that I’m looking at abs! But, y’know I'm just talking hypothetically—”
She slapped a hand over her mouth.
Silence.
Roman stared at her like she’d just grown a second head. “You’ve got a crush on Jesus?”
