in the morning, happy, laughing fish heads

Summary:

Day 15 of Hermit-a-Day May: Jevin

Sal's here! Jevin talks to him.

Notes:

This one's the second one I got an idea for

Title from Fish Heads by Barnes & Barnes

Work Text:

Taking his bag, Jevin walks out his front door, locking it behind him. The river was calling, or more specifically, the fish were calling, and who was he to ignore it.

He looks out at the lake while walking on the path along it, observing Doc's island when he passes it, and Ren's house as well. It's a pleasant morning, sun only just rising above the horizon. After several minutes, Jevin gets to his destination. The river mouth is calm when it's this early, the surface glistening from sunlight catching the water's movement.

He catches a glimpse of red in the water, the scaly pop of color standing out against the moss, lichen, and stone. It's his salmon friend, Sal.

Jevin crouches down, hand in the water, "High Sal. How are you doing?"

The water gloves around the fish, "Hello Jevin. I've been doing well, how about you?" Sal slowly circles around in the water, before moving in front of the man and staying there.

"Good, good. Has the lake water been nice? I know it's getting colder because it's no longer summer."

"The temperature is great; I much prefer it actually. But how are you handling the cold, won't you freeze?" Jevin pokes his 'skin' (really just the top layer of slime jelly), which is as squishy as usual. "It's still warm enough that it doesn't do anything. Winter is always a pain though- too cold and I freeze, but if there's a fire and I'm too warm then I get to be more liquid than slime."

"That sounds like a problem."

"Yep."

The two blink at each other, Sal staring into Jevin's soul. The fish laughs, jaw opening like one of those moving wall fish that you hang up on a plaque.

The laugh sticks in his head while he slowly gains consciousness. He dreamt of Sal again, the fish invading his sleep almost daily for a few months now. Looking over to the salmon statue in his room, Jevin wonders if he should move it out. Naming it Sal and keeping it in here was probably a bad idea, but hey, a talking salmon invading his dreams doesn't hurt him. It's a little weird, certainly, but what dream isn't.

Notes:

I really need a nap

Have a lovely day/night, and don't talk to random fish
