Heart Full Of Worms

Summary:

Soulsucker is shivering. Not shaking like he does when he’s trying to perform a miracle he can’t do anymore, but shivering. Like he’s cold, but Starfucker was under the impression he couldn’t get cold. He might not be an angel now but he has retained a lot of their quirks.

Work Text:

Soulsucker is shivering. Not shaking like he does when he’s trying to perform a miracle he can’t do anymore, but shivering. Like he’s cold, but Starfucker was under the impression he couldn’t get cold. He might not be an angel now but he has retained a lot of their quirks.

His face is pale and sweat-slick, his eyes unfocused. He sways on the spot in the middle of their kitchen, paused halfway through a task he seems to have forgotten.

Starfucker approaches him carefully. “You’re not looking so hot, angel.”

“Dizzy.” He mumbles. “Don’t feel good.”

“Alright, come with me.” Starfucker takes his hand and leads him into the living room. Ze gently lowers him onto the couch and presses the back of zer hand to his forehead.

“Shit, you’re burning up.”

“Did that already.” He mumbles, then giggles weakly when ze fixes him with a look.

Ze tuts at him. “I’m glad that you think that you falling out of the sky was funny.”

“It is funny. You are just boring.”

“I didn’t realise you could get sick.” Starfucker pets his hair gently. “I can’t, so I assumed you couldn’t either.”

“I’m not like you.” He leans his forehead against zer sternum. “I’m not a demon.”

Neither of them are entirely sure what Soulsucker... is. He’s not an angel, that’s for sure - he has no link to heaven anymore, and he can’t perform any of his miracles. But he isn’t a demon either. Starfucker would know if he was, ze would feel the link to him that ze feels to all other demons. Geoff couldn’t find any specific answers in any of the religious texts he knows about, but he did have an idea.

Soulsucker is something that should be dead but isn’t. He shouldn’t have survived falling, but he did, because Starfucker caught him. The universe doesn’t know what to do with him, so it has put him in limbo. He appears to still be immortal in the same way he was when he was an angel, but without the powers and protections that came with it.

Hence why he appears to have a fever.

“You need rest.” Starfucker says. Ze picks up a blanket and wraps it around his shoulders. “I don’t think medication will help you, but you’re super run down. How did this even happen?”

“I do not know. How do humans get sick?” He asks as ze makes him comfortable.

“Uhhh… tiny organisms get into their systems and fuck their shit up.” Ze shrugs. “It gets worse when they’re cold or tired or something like that.”

“Oh.” His eyes widen like he has just realised something. “Is it because I was out in the rain?”

“When?”

“Yesterday when there was a big rainstorm, I went and sat outside in the garden for… a while.”

“How long is a while?”

“Several hours.” Soulsucker holds his hands up when ze gasps. “I had to! There were worms!”

“You stayed outside in the freezing rain for hours because there were worms? ” Ze rubs zer hands over zer face. “Jesus Christ, it’s a miracle you don’t have hypothermia!”

“I don’t know what that is.” He says. “But the worms were very interesting.”

“The worms were interesting. Great.” Starfucker shakes zer head. “I am going to make you tea, and then I’m going to look into getting a worm farm so you can look at worms from the safety of our living room.”

“Can I tell you about the worms when you come back?”

“Yes, you can tell me about the worms.”
