Chapter 1: CHAPTER ONE. ARE YOU SUCH A DREAMER?
Chapter Text
Atsushi was the only one at the Armed Detective Agency’s office besides the receptionists. The rest of the agency was in separate locations. The president, Fukazawa-San, along with Dazai and Ranpo, are currently in a meeting with Government officials, The Port Mafia, The Hunting Dogs, The Guild, and the organization that stepped in to help them defeat Dostoevsky, The Order of the Clock Tower. Yosano, Kunikida, and Kenji were handling Sigma’s official entrance exam. Kyoka was on an assignment finding an old lady’s missing cat. Tanizaki…well he was the member chosen by Mori for the exchange…he could only hope that his friend was okay…he was snapped out of his thoughts, however, when he saw a somewhat disheveled yet put together blonde man wearing grey overall shorts with a white dress shirt and a black tie with a red eye symbol on it. He had recognized the man as George Orwell. One of the members of The Order of the Clock Tower who helped defeat Dostoevsky, he thought to himself. I have no idea what his skill is, but it left Dostoevsky incredibly vulnerable.
“Hello Nakajima-San. I believe you know who I am, just as I know who you are.”
Orwell spoke, his accent was crisp yet his voice was monotone and exhausted. The gaze in his pale grey eyes did not match the civil smile on his face. While he could tell that Orwell was obviously tired - that was a given because of the eye bags - the look in the eyes however seemed almost dangerous.
“Umm, yes. I, uh- know you're a member of The Order of the Clock Tower. You helped defeat Dostoevsky.”
he replied, a bit wary. Atsushi knew that someone with eyes like that usually would be looking for trouble. However, this man helped defeat Dostoevsky, so Atsushi was confident enough in Orwell's morals to not prepare for an attack.
“Nakajima-San, I don't deserve that praise. After all, I hardly did much.”
Orwell stated.
“I thought there was a meeting going on with all of the organizations that fought against the Decay of the Angel? Why are you here?”
Is it over already? I assumed it would be longer…
“Ah, that answer is a simple one. I got bored. They only had tea and wine, which was not allowed at the meeting, by the way. But the Port Mafia’s boss brought some anyway, and no one objected. Now I might sound like a traitor to my nation for saying this, but I never cared for tea. Coffee does tea’s one job way better, and that job is keeping me awake. The only thing I like better than coffee is a good bottle of gin, but as I said before, alcohol isn't allowed. So I left to get some coffee and just didn't return.”
Orwell's reasoning seemed valid, Atsushi did see a cup of coffee in his hand, however Atsushi was still confused as to why he came here, the Agency.
“But why are you here? At the agency instead of the meeting?”
“Why, you see, Nakajima-San, I wanted to see you for myself. The one who managed to free not only himself, but others from the dimension created by Amenogozen using the powers of the tiger. You are a very goodthinkful person Nakajima-San.”
Goodthinkful??? Is this guy high?
“Ummmm, Orwell-San, what does goodthinkful mean? And you can address me as kun, I'm younger than you. I think?”
Atsushi wasn't actually sure of the man's age but judging by his face he looked older, at least 26.
“Well Nakajima-kun goodthinkfull is a word in a language I invented. It translates somewhat to orthodox, and by orthodox I mean you're perfectly, and I don't mean this in a bad way, but you're perfectly normal. You are completely normal by society's standards if we ignore your ability of course but I'm not talking about that I'm talking about your character. If I think about it, goodthinkful isn't the right word. no it isn't, let me start over you are a plusgood individual.”
Orwell had let out a sigh at the fact that he couldn't use the word goodthinkful and that he had to start over. Atsushi was wondering what plusgood meant as well but he just wasn't going to ask.
“Plusgood means extraordinary, after all what you accomplished against Dostoevsky is truly extraordinary.”
As Orwell began to explain, Atsushi couldn't help but notice that the praise, while feeling genuine, contained ulterior motives. As Orwell continued talking, Atsushi began to think. What is Orwell's true purpose for being here, what could he possibly want from me, no. What does he want from the agency? Surely due to their help against Dostoevsky we would gladly grant their requests if they asked for something at the meeting. It must be something that we wouldn't willingly accept helping them with. War? No. The United Kingdom is powerful enough to not need the help of Japan. Borrowing an agency member to use for their ability? No. He wouldn't need to talk to me, they would just take one of us. Unless this is a distraction to prevent me from noticing. No. The Order of The Clock Tower aims more towards civility they would simply ask. The worst case is I'm a hostage. WAIT! The book…
“You are truly a plusgood individual Nakajima which is why I deeply regret what is to happen however Big Brother will have my head if I don't follow the orders I have been given. No matter how much hatred I have in my heart for him, my desire for life is much more abundant.”
Atsushi looked into Orwell’s eyes. They still had that dangerous glint to them but that hardly covered up the hopelessness.
“I assure you Nakajima if I still had the choice to follow my own agenda this wouldn't be happening, however the cost of the peace brought by defeating Dostoevsky is an unwanted war against a greater evil, the cost of the freedom for ability user to walk beneath the sun comes at the price of becoming a slave to those in the hands of power, the only way for the world that we are in to not affect one as yourself is to become ignorant to the truths of this world. For all I know now is that war is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength.
As Orwell spoke those words Atsushi knew the man would attack. He activated his ability but it was too late.
“ABILITY 1984!”
Were the last were the last words he heard before his vision faded to black.
