Chapter 1: The Morning

Chapter Text

That Night was more than a night.

She had laid bare her true feelings to me, despite her bluntness, I couldn’t help but think how… sweet it all was. I reciprocated, how could I not, when such a beautiful star stood before me. I learned how to fly to the stars and meet them head on. To meet her where she stood, and say the words back. She laid her head on my shoulder that night, asking me for the comfort I somehow provided.

That Night that was more than just a night, was a night ago.

Ideally, what would constitute a normal love story, would end there. Life is a lot more strange and a lot less convenient.

“Yi Sang. As much as Faust enjoys your company, Faust simply cannot allow the other sinners to be distracted by… us.” Faust uttered in an oh-so-matter-of-factly way.

“Faust must request of you to be discreet with our romantic bond. We do not need unnecessary attention when such important tasks are ahead of us.”

“Of course, I dare not impede. Miss Faust, you can count on my order, that our aforementioned relationship need not erase our professionalism.”

She reached out her hand to graze mine.

“Faust appreciates your effort… but if you would, Yi sang…” she paused. I waited in anticipation.

“Faust would think it… ideal if you simply called me ‘Faust.’”

My heart dropped. I’ve never been so enraptured this way; is this her way of expressing her comfort with me? I… don’t ever recall her treating others this closely. It seems as if… I’m an aberration worth studying, a strange identity so weird to her that she had to pull me closer to examine. I may be overthinking her intentions, but… I… I’m frozen in place. She must’ve noticed. Naturally, I’ve always known her to be an observant person such as I, maybe even moreso. She must’ve noticed the red that colored my cheeks, as she gave me one of those microscopic smiles I crave for. Those little glimpses of her.

“…That is all I have to say.”

She chuckled.

“I shall be going, Yi Sang.”

“Y-Yes. Of course, that would be ideal… Faust.”

“Faust will see you.”

She waved me a sorrowful goodbye, almost like she wanted to stay in my company longer, but her duty had to come first. That’s one thing I always admired about her. How she always put her duty as a researcher above all else. How strange is she, for even how she escapes my company—of which I am so dearly fond of—is something that draws me even closer to her. Even as she walks away from me now to enter the door leading back to the bus, I still can’t help but admire her. Before she left, she turned to me. Her eyes, as beautiful as the stars she so admired. She stared at me, longingly, as if she was trying to memorize every speck and every particle of my sleep-deprived face. Was that a slight blush on her face just now? No, it can’t be. She turned back around and left, with me all alone in the corridor, yet, I felt like I was left with the lingering feeling that she already misses me. I couldn’t help but smile. How strange, indeed.
