Chapter Text
The Narrator
You're on a path in the snow. And at the end of that path is a house. And in the basement of that house is an Angel.
The Narrator
You're here to slay him. If you don't, it will be the end of your world.
The Narrator
What is extreme is ending the world. Which he will do, if left unslayed. So get to it.
The Narrator
Very well. You make your way through the snow, into the house. You'll find the angel within.
Voice of the Detective
We're not going to kill him, right? He's an angel, he can't be bad! And you're not a murderer.
The Narrator
You might not be, but he is. A murderer and a criminal, so he needs to die. You've heard of the trolley problem, right?
The Narrator
The interior of the house is almost entirely bare. The air is stale and musty and the floor and walls are painted in a fine layer of dust. The only furniture of note is a plain wooden table. Perched on that table is a knife.
The Narrator
The knife is your implement. Take it.
The Narrator
You take the knife from the table. Good.
The Narrator
The door to the basement creaks open, revealing a staircase faintly illuminated by an unseen light in the room below. This is an oppressive place. The air feels heavy and damp, a hint of rot filtering from the ancient wood. If the Angel really lives here, slaying him is probably doing him a favor.
The Narrator
His voice carries up the stairs.
"Who's there?"
Voice of the Detective
He doesn’t sound like he could end the world.
The Narrator
Don't fall for it.
"Oh? Come down then, so I can meet you."
The Narrator
You walk down the stairs and lock eyes with the Angel. There’s a heavy chain around his wrist, binding him to the far wall of the basement.
Voice of the Detective
Do you think he's into men?
The Narrator
What he's in to is ending the world. Focus.
"There you are. Is that knife for stabbing me?"
"Do it then."
The Narrator
Do it.
Voice of the Detective
Should we talk to him first? I still don't think he can end the world.
The Narrator
Are you serious? People are suffering right now because you think the criminal's hot, I hope you know that.
The Narrator
There’s no reasoning with him. Pick up the knife.
"What an awkward way to start a conversation. Let me know if you change your mind on the killing thing."
"Thanks. I like being un-murdered at the moment."
The Narrator
Have you considered changing your mind? Please consider it.
The Narrator
You walk up to the chains binding the Angel to the wall and give them a tug. They’re large and heavy, far too solid for you to even imagine breaking them apart.
"Yeah, I've tried that. You might be better off murdering me."
"I don't want to be here. In the house, I mean! I don't want to get killed."
The Narrator
He's not supposed to know that!
Voice of the Detective
How is he going to end the world if he doesn't even know?
"Am I? Well, I'll try my best, if that's what you want."
The Narrator
See! He wants to end the world. Kill him.
Voice of the Detective
He's joking.
"Is there a key upstairs? Maybe go check?"
The Narrator
No. You do not go check. In fact, the basement door's locked now. What a shame.
Voice of the Detective
Did you do that? Let me out, I—
The Narrator
Yes, I know. You don't want to be stuck here. What a shame that you are, and will continue to be so until the Angel is slain.
"Door's stuck? Guess we're stuck here. Alone. Together."
Voice of the Detective
What does that mean? Is he flirting? We never can tell.
"Anyway! Looks like you're gonna need to cut me out!"
The Narrator
Ew. I am not describing what this looks like. Use your imagination.
The Narrator
Free from the chains, he stands up.
Voice of the Detective
There's no way that didn't hurt. Is he okay?
"Let's go, then?'
The Narrator
Sorry, but I can't let that happen. He deserves to die.
The Narrator
As you reach the top of the stairs, your body steps forward, knife in hand.
Voice of the Detective
What? No, we don't do that, we're not a murderer.
The Narrator
Oh but look, you are doing it!
The Narrator
Your body lunges forward, but he moves out of the way. Rude.
"Guess you changed your mind, then?"
The Narrator
You are so mean to me, you know that? Your body tries again.
"It's you or me, isn't it?"
"Well in that case..."
The Narrator
He takes the knife from your hand. Look at what you've done, you're going to get killed! Stop him!
"I'd much rather it be me."
The Narrator
What? He holds the knife gingerly against his own throat.
The Narrator
Everything goes dark.
