Chapter 1: Prequel

Chapter Text

It was late. Steve shouldn’t be up, should be resting before the heist they were to pull off tomorrow. But he couldn’t. Something felt… off. Like some part of the plan would inevitably fail. He had been looking over it for some time now, had been thinking about all that was said during their planning.

His mind always seemed to come back to the mission on Vormir. From what he had gathered, Thanos loved his older daughter. So why had he killed her? They were missing a big part of the picture here, but Steve was pretty sure that you didn’t murder your children on a random planet for fun. Unless he didn’t have a choice. And if Thanos didn’t have a choice, they probably wouldn’t have one either. By sending Clint and Natasha, Steve already knew who would never come back. It was obvious.

He needed to do something about it. But what could he do? Sending Tony or Scott would destroy the plan for New York, the same went with Bruce. And Thor was the best choice for the reality stone on Asgard.

Steve continued turning the plan inside and out, searching for a way to retrieve the six infinity stones and bring back all of them. But no matter what, he always came back to the exact same plan. And that is what he had to do in order to win.

The next day, as all the remaining avengers gathered on the platform, Steve was determined that his plan was the best. The only inconvenience was that he hadn’t told anyone about the change. But he wasn’t planning to. He had to do this on his own.

Before going to bed, he had swapped Natasha’s time bracelet with his own. He was just hoping she wouldn’t check the coordinates.

If any of them learned he had changed the plan without telling he would not be able to save Natasha. She deserved better. He was doing this.

‘‘See you in a minute’’

A white light flashed and they were all going down a tunnel to their destinations.
