Work Text:

The kitchen was quiet, save for the faint clatter of utensils and the hum of the morning wind slipping through the window. Sunlight streamed softly outside. Aether stood by the stove, staring down at the simple omelette he’d prepared for his lover—but the comfort it usually brought felt miles away. His chest was tight, his mind racing, and no matter how much he wanted to let go, the weight of everything pressed too hard.

Lyney appeared silently in the doorway, freshly woken, watching with his usual calm—the kind that didn’t rush or panic, but simply was. He noticed the tremble in Aether’s shoulders, the way his hands shook when he moved to plate the breakfast. There was no need to ask if something was wrong—Lyney already knew.

Without a word, he crossed the room and slid his arms gently around Aether’s waist, steadying him. Aether stiffened, pride holding him upright. “Good mor—”

Lyney cut him off with a soft kiss to his shoulder. “Good morning. You’re so used to holding yourself up that you forget you’re allowed to rest again, mon amour.”

Before Aether could respond, Lyney’s arms tightened, lifting him completely off his feet. Aether’s breath hitched in surprise and resistance, but Lyney didn’t budge.

“You’re not carrying this life alone anymore,” he said firmly, his voice a warm anchor. “I’m carrying you now.”

Aether’s protests died on his lips as the warmth of Lyney’s body enveloped him. Feeling his heart beating—steady and close—was enough to quiet the storm inside. He let his head tuck beneath Lyney’s chin, the world outside shrinking into silence. The tremors in his hands slowed, replaced by a fragile warmth that began to spread through his chest.

Lyney lowered them onto a chair, Aether still cradled in his arms like something precious, like something worth protecting fiercely. He reached for the plate of food, bringing a forkful to his mouth, his eyes never leaving Aether’s face.

“This is really delicious,” Lyney said softly.

Aether hid his face in Lyney’s arms. “It’s just omelette…”

“And it’s the best omelette I’ve ever had!”

Aether was too tired to even giggle. “You’re exaggerating…”

Lyney smiled gently. “I’m really grateful. Even through your exhaustion, you still made me something to eat. Thank you, my dearest.”

“I just… love you. And I was already awake…”

Lyney took Aether’s hand in his and kissed the back of it gently. “Thank you, my dear.”

Aether murmured, “When are you going to let me down?”

“Never,” Lyney replied with a grin. “You’re my hostage now and forever—in my arms. So you can just rest while I, the greatest magician, carry you.”

Aether’s eyelids fluttered, exhaustion clawing at him. He wanted to pull away, to prove he could still stand, still do this on his own. But the heaviness in his limbs said otherwise.

“You don’t have to be strong right now, mon amour…” Lyney whispered, his voice dipping into that intimate, grounding tone that always slowed Aether’s heart. “Let me carry your weight—even the parts you think are too much. You don’t have to fix everything. Not now. Not ever. I am here.”

Aether’s fingers curled into Lyney’s shirt, the tension in his body slowly melting as the steady rhythm of Lyney’s heartbeat lulled the storm inside him.

Minutes passed like gentle waves. Lyney continued eating slowly, savoring the meal Aether had made, speaking softly, “You’ve been running on empty, trying to hold it all together. But you deserve to rest…”

The warmth of Lyney’s embrace was a promise, a refuge. Slowly, the fight in Aether’s eyes dimmed, replaced by something softer, more tired. He sagged completely into Lyney’s arms, head resting just beneath his chin.

Lyney brushed a thumb across Aether’s temple, then pressed a kiss there. “I’m not going anywhere. You’re safe. Let yourself fall—just for a moment.”

When sleep began to claim Aether—slow, hesitant—Lyney lifted him gently from the chair and carried him toward the bedroom. Every step he took was filled with reverence.

He laid Aether down carefully, tucking the blanket snugly around his shoulders, making sure no cold could reach him. He ran a soft hand through Aether’s hair, lingering as if trying to memorize every strand.

Then he leaned down, resting his forehead gently against Aether’s temple, his eyes tracing the peaceful lines of his face. Even in sleep, the exhaustion was etched deep—faint shadows under his eyes, lips slightly parted as his breathing evened out.

“You look so tired, my beautiful sun,” Lyney whispered, his voice thick with awe and endless care. “You’ve carried the weight of the whole world… and it’s worn you down. But here, now, you’re safe. You don’t have to be strong.”

He pressed a kiss to Aether’s temple, then another to the corner of his mouth—each one a quiet vow to hold him steady.

Lyney settled beside him, careful not to disturb the fragile peace that had finally settled over the room. He reached out and brushed a stray lock of hair from Aether’s face, fingers soft and reverent.

“I’ll stay right here,” he murmured, his voice a warm caress. “Until you’re ready to face the world again.”

And there, in the quiet room where only a glimpse of sunlight peeked through the half-covered window, where only the softest breaths filled the air, Lyney kept his vigil—a steady heartbeat beside the one who needed to rest, to heal, and to simply be.

Slowly, he allowed himself to rest too, held in the arms of his tired beloved—uncaring of the time or the sun outside.
