Henry makes a sad noise, scooting closer to Alex on the porch steps. “I’m so fucking sorry, Alex.”
Alex should push him away. He should try to find what they used to be in the rubble of his family fortress and piece that back together, leaving the rest where it lies. The things that Alex thought they could be are mixed into the wreckage around him, that idea a broken and doomed piece of folklore that will never have the chance to be told.
Another thing he can’t have; another thing he can’t keep.
In the end, that’s what makes him cry.
Henry probably thinks that it’s about his parents or Oliver when tears start to fall from Alex’s eyes, when he pulls Alex close and tries to hold him together as he breaks and breaks and breaks again.
