What's up with Pyro?

Summary:

It was the small things that made it easier to live with Pyro, maybe it was the fact that they always checked in on their teammate after a battle, or that they always took the effort to cook for the team when they could. Helping Engi with his machines when he needed to move them, assisting Medic with his... less than ethical experiments, and just being a great help around the base. The RED Team came to value their odd teammate.

So, when they started acting strange, everyone noticed.

Chapter 1: Trip and fall

Chapter Text

Pyro had always seemed a bit... off. The team was first scared of the man when they had met them, if they were even a man. Seeing them nothing more than a mad pyromaniac that enjoyed nothing more to burn their enemies to ash. Most everyone was warry of them to some degree, but soon the team opened up to them, or more accurately, understood they weren’t going to use them as fire starter.

It was the small things that made it easier to live with Pyro, maybe it was the fact that they always checked in on their teammate after a battle (even if no one could understand what they were saying), or that they always took the effort to cook for the team when they could. Helping Engi with his machines when he needed to move them, assisting Medic with his... less than ethical experiments, and just being a great help around the base. The RED Team came to value their odd teammate.

So, when they started acting strange, everyone noticed. Scout was the first. He was rushing through enemy territory, having infiltrated their base going through a blind spot while everyone was busy mid battle, when he noticed what sounded like humming..?

Someone was singing on the damn battlefield. he was careful to check around the corner and found that it was Pyro. They were humming a chorus from a "Lovin' spoon full” song whilst burning the remains of Blu's demo man to ash. the sight wouldn’t have been too odd. Burning enemies to ash was par for the course, but there was something… off about the whole scene that Scout couldn’t quite place.

Instead of the usual cheeriness Pyro has when they burned their enemies, there was a sombreness about them. They seemed almost distressed? Staring at the body, trembling, looking to their hands, their flame thrower, then the body. Clearly something was wrong.

He looked back behind him to the entrance. He really should go and grab that brief case before he loses his chance, but he couldn’t leave Pyro like this.

“Hey, uh, Pyro? Buddy? You’s ok over there?”

Scout called out, carefully approaching the Pyromaniac. Pyro seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in and looked up at Scout with their usual glee. Mumbling something to Scout and waving at him.

Before Scout could say anything else, Pyro skipped away with their flame thrower, and out back into the battlefield. ‘What on earth was that about?’ he wondered. A loud explosion pulled him out of his thoughts and reminded him of what they were on a battlefield for.

Scout wasn’t able to make it to the other team’s intel. He got gunned down by BLU teams Heavy before he left their base. But that didn’t bother Scout as much as it usually did, he was more concerned about Pyro, and the weird behaviour he saw them exhibit today.

He would have to ask Pyro about it when they weren’t risking their necks for a pay-check.
