Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Mitsuki groaned as she reached for her phone, the noise of the alarm slowly dragging her mind out of its state of sleep. She finally found it and turned it off quickly, sitting up in bed and rubbing her eyes. Mitsuki reached over to her nightstand, grabbing her glasses and pushing it up her face as she swung her legs over the side of her bed.

She made her way to the bathroom to do her daily routine – brushing her hair and teeth… and that's pretty much it. Yeah, she didn't do much in the morning. With a sigh, she made her way over to her room again, changing out of her sleepwear and into the mandated school female uniform. Truth be told, she never exactly… liked wearing skirts. But it was whatever, really.

Mitsuki made her way downstairs, the CD shop still not open yet. Her uncle, Joe, was busy restocking the store. “I'm heading out to school!” Mitsuki called out, slinging her bag over her shoulders and heading out, her uncle waving her off with a kind smile.

The streets were busy, people bustling about and bumping into one another. Mitsuki sighed and began making her way towards the school, putting her earphones in to listen to her playlist. She shuffled it, the first song playing being “Doused” by DIIV.

She barely even noticed she was at the school until she had accidentally bumped into someone. And that someone was Aya Oosawa. “Ah… S-Sorry! I guess I zoned out…” Mitsuki said nervously. She wasn't ever good with people, choosing to stay in her own little bubble of music rather than going out to most social settings.

“No, you're good!” Aya said with a soft smile that made Mitsuki feel… weird. But not in an unwelcome way. Mitsuki merely nodded and continued walking to her locker, having to retrieve her supplies for next block.

After getting her supplies, Mitsuki made her way to first block, biology class. She sat at her usual seat near the window, liking to look down at the school bustling about around her as she was stuck in class. She heard someone taking the seat beside her and she turned her head, locking her gaze on Aya. Though, it seemed the other girl didn't notice Mitsuki and just continued talking to her small group of friends.

In a way, Mitsuki sort of envied Aya. She was always around so many people, and almost everyone loved her. Mitsuki wondered how it would be like to be her… Sure, it might seem overwhelming, but… what would it be like to have people who would support you and be by your side no matter what?

Mitsuki sighed softly, the sound not even audible to anyone but herself. She put her headphones out of her ears as the teacher began the lesson, but Mitsuki couldn't pay attention. She never could.

About halfway through the lesson, she completely zoned out, not hearing anything the teacher was saying. It wasn't until she saw a paper slide across her desk that she snapped out. It was handed to her by the school’s popular boy, Narita Megumu. Narita smirked down at her and leaned in, his voice barely above a whisper, “Hey, did ya do the homework? I'm sure a smart girl like you finished it.” He winked and Mitsuki cringed mentally.

That's when she realized… shit, she hadn't even done the homework. “I uhm… didn't do it yet?” She said nervously.

Narita blinked and laughed. “And here I thought you were supposed to be smart. What a waste!” Mitsuki wanted to die right then and there, her face tinged slightly red. She was gonna say something… until Aya spoke up before her.

“Someone who asks for help then disses… Jerkface.” Aya said bluntly, touching up her makeup and not even sparing a glance at Narita. The boy looked like he’d seen a ghost and just walked back to his desk, almost like his tail was between his legs.

Mitsuki finally looked down at the paper that was on her desk… a field trip form to some science lab. She read it over and didn't think much of it. She didn't exactly wanna go… but maybe it would be better than sitting in this boring ass class all day.

She sighed and put it away, tucking it into her bag. The lesson soon ended and the rest of the day went by in a blur, Mitsuki finally being free. The walk back to the CD shop wasn't long, but Mitsuki took a second to stop by an alley and pet a stray black cat that rubbed against her leg.

She bent down, her hand gently brushing the fur of its back. It let out a low purr, moving so it could press its head to Mitsuki’s hand. Mitsuki smiled at the cat, gently scratching behind its ear before standing up. She quickly went back on track, following the path she knew all too well back to the shop.

Joe seemed like he wasn't there, probably out running errands. Mitsuki knew it must be hard for him to take care of a child all by himself, so she didn't ask for much. She made her way up to her room, throwing her bag by her door and flopping onto her bed.

Mitsuki glanced around her room, here eyes landing on the bag she placed beside the door. She let out a sigh, not exactly feeling up to do homework. She sat up and stretched, finally standing to retrieve the bag and open it up.

Her eyes landed on the form… eh, she’d ask Joe to sign it tomorrow before she left. Mitsuki reached for it and placed it down on her desk, then took out all of her supplies to start homework.

Mitsuki couldn't name why… but she had a feeling tomorrow would be one hell of a ride.
