Summary
The house isn’t even all that decorated—just a few plastic pumpkins and a cardboard headstone—but there’s a little plastic stool placed thoughtfully beneath the doorbell for vertically-challenged trick-or-treaters like Estelle. She practically jumps up on it before slamming a hand on the button.
A few seconds later, as Nico is pulling her away from slamming the doorbell a fourth time, a man opens the door, holding a a bowl of candy. He smiles at the two of them, showing off plastic fangs. “Well, look at this! What are you guys?”
Estelle puffs up her chest, fanning her arms. “Parrot,” she says proudly, and lets out a squawk so loud it startles Nico. Then, without warning, she jabs him in the leg. Hard.
He straightens, forcing a grimace into something vaguely friendly. “And I’m a pirate,” he mutters.
Another jab.
“Uh. Arghh, matey.”
