A duck or three, just for me

Summary:

Veritas Ratio was undoubtedly- as his lazy students often say before an exam- screwed. He had fallen in love. Hard. For none other than his coworker, Aventurine. A man who was an omega- just like himself.

Or- Ratio wants to court Aventurine, but its hard to gift a man who could buy everything he possibly wanted, so he focuses on caring for the reckless omega instead. His feelings might not be as unrequited as he thinks.

Notes:

This is a spin- off/ Ratio Pov from another fic here but it can be read as a stand alone.

Multi chapter because I'm hoping to make it longer, I wasn't going to write an Omegaverse again but I miss the lack of Omega x Omega fics

Not beta- edited on like an hour of sleep it will be sorted by Sunday or when chapter 2 releases, so sorry for mistakes might change summary too

Edit: wow I can’t believe this one seems more popular than the OG haha TY all..

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Veritas Ratio was undoubtedly- as his lazy students often say before an exam- screwed. He had fallen in love. Hard . For none other than his coworker, Aventurine. A man who was an omega- just like himself.

As soon as he had learned about secondary genders, Ratio knew what being an omega meant, what was expected of you when you presented as one.

So, in a country full of majorly sexist citizens, you could only imagine the sorrow that would take over their demeanour when they found out he had manifested as one. With the sole exception of his mentor, professor Rond, bless the man for never once believing he had no potential.

Everyone else thought the same- a bright mind destined to do nothing more than stand by an alphas side- to spend his days cleaning and caring for his children. Well, little Veritas didn’t like the sound of that.

So, he proved them wrong. It wasn’t long before he was the highest in his class, outranking any alpha, young and old. Following that, he was accepted to none other than Veritas Prime university.

Safe to say, everyone who had once judged his intellect based on his secondary gender was now grovelling at his feet for forgiveness, becoming a ‘celebrity’ among them. His secondary gender had long disappeared from rumours after that.

There was nothing more he hated than fools who put down those who wished to learn just for who they were.

However, he had never met anyone as idiotic as some of the alphas who tried to pursue him in his university days.

The biggest scandal was thanks to some rich man's son, who tried to pressure him with his pheromones to give him a pass. Naturally he physically threw the guy out of the class for harassing him in such a way, he hated how close those pheromones were to affecting him. Later on, the discussion groups had watered the conflict down to the alpha bribing him with money. Unfortunately this would let the rude alpha off easier but also kept the discussions of his sex under wraps.

After that he would wear his alabaster head more often, not only was it good for blocking people out, but also scents. In his early adult years he discovered he was not a normal omega. His sense of smell was strong, too strong, he could sense pheromones at a far greater level than the average alpha and omega, it was troubling but like everything in his life. He would overcome the challenge.

On the opposite side of the scale, he was also ‘gifted’ with a weak scent, one that could be completely covered with the use of basic products like scent patches; it certainly saved him trouble in the long run. Often, people would just assume he was an alpha or beta, and he didn’t bother confirming or denying anything.

Let people think what they wanted, if it bothered them, then that was their problem.

He vowed to himself then and there that he had no interest in finding a mate, he would live his life in solitude and be perfectly content. His heart had never beaten for another until now anyways.

Until, he met Aventurine, that is.

There was something so captivating, alluring, about those eyes that burned with determination. As the gun pressed further into the IPC executives chest, there was a sudden influx of a sharp, burning scent.

An omegas scent had never particularly caught his attention before, after all, most were dull and repetitive to him.

But Aventurines-

His were different, unique. Behind that smokey smell was a hint of something sweeter. It reminded him of the breakfast served in Pier Points 5 star hotels. Not that he's stayed in them often.

The Stoneheart was almost everything he wasn’t as a textbook definition omega, his stature was fairly small and, Aeons, he was beautiful. The only thing that screamed he wasn’t an omega was that bitter scent, the sugary mix noticeable thanks to his heightened senses. Ratio was still certain that wouldn’t put too many people off and the few it did, greatly missed out.

Anyone would be lucky to catch his eyes- those electrifying teal and magenta eyes.

Aventurine slowly lowered the gun and smiled like nothing extreme had happened, his eyes never once breaking contact.

Veritas Ratio may have taken a silent oath to himself to never fall for an alpha, so it's only natural that an omega would come along and steal his heart. One that may bring more trouble than he’s worth.

After all, if Ratio did attempt to court him, make his feelings known, what could he give the man that could buy anything he ever wanted? Would his intentions be misinterpreted as something between companions? Extremely likely.

During the short alliance he and Aventurine had, Ratio had yet to see all of the man’s very sides. Aventurine was a strange man, he kept his cards close to his chest, it was hard to determine if his emotions were genuine or a surprisingly well created mask that never crumbled. Hiding emotions that Aventurine had discarded long ago.

It wasn’t until months of being acquainted with the man he saw a more unguarded side to him.

When Ratio was about to wind down for the night, he received a call, he was debating ignoring it as he had a busy day meeting with many IPC representatives. However the name Aventurine flashed up on his screen and he couldn’t turn a blind eye after knowing.

So, he picked up. “Gambler? Have you any idea what time it is?” Ratio glanced at the digital clock placed on the nightstand, it was almost midnight.

“Ratio…Uh Hey!” Aventurine's words were slightly slurred, an indicator that he was drunk. Ratio sighed to himself, maybe he should have just went to sleep.

Shuffling could be heard from the other side, then a new voice chimed in, “Hi, this is Aventurines friend, right?”

“Don’t be stupid, he doesn’t have any.” Butted in a smooth, irritated voice.

He might regret his next words, “yes. Is there a problem?”

“Can you come and pick him up? I’ll text you the address.”  By then, Ratio was already putting on his sandals.

When he arrived, Aventurine was, to put it simply. A sorry sight. Passed out on the table, between the empty shot and wine glasses. Not to mention his company- even from a distance he could tell- two unmated alphas with powerful pheromones. He wasted no time putting on his stone head.

Really, had the gambler no common sense? He was unconscious and in the presence of not just one but two alphas. Though, not very courteous with the way they continued to drink, unintentionally spreading their scent all over him.

Disgusting.

Only when he was inches away from the table did the female alpha notice him, confusion on her face when she saw his appearance. “Ratio…Right? I’m glad you had no trouble finding this place, sorry to dump this pain in the ass on ya.”

“So this is the famous Doctor, in-person? He’s not all that. I bet there's nothing special under that mask of yours.” The second alpha chimed in, his colourful earrings shining due to the bright lights of the street.

That snarky comment made Ratio remove the alabaster head, he was confident in his looks, it was the most effective way to shut up anyone. Aventurine also seemed to be returning to reality so it would be good for him to see a familiar face.

Although, their words had implied Aventurine had been talking to these people about him, not that it mattered. There wouldn’t have been much to spill. They weren’t friends, he wouldn’t even consider them close. In fact, from the moment they were born, their lives had branched in such different directions that one can only wonder how their paths intertwined.

“Great to meet you! I’m Topaz, no need to worry about that loser over there.” She added, it was then Ratio knew he would get on well with her. “Say, is it alright if you give me your number?”

Ratio shot her a skeptical look, had she already caught on? This was obviously another Stoneheart so he didn’t want to lower the gambler's reputation by acting rude.

“Er, don’t misunderstand, I just think it would be wise in case something like this ever happens again. You know how Aventurine is, that guy would pass out in a ditch before calling anyone for help. Him phoning someone tonight was a rare occurrence.” Topaz scratched the back of her neck, making a very valid point.

Again implied that this was almost certainly going to be a regular occurrence. Ratio knew that office after parties could get a little wild, but surely they have limits. Judging by the sheer number of glasses on the table, he doubted his previous thought.

If Aventurine was attending these regularly then something grave was bound to happen eventually. Forget passing out in a ditch, he might just breathe his last breath in one.

“Please contact me when he gets into this state. Though not too often, if my recent call history is flooded with your number, I fear we will have problems.” The problem being Aventurine's lack of taking care of his body and knowing his limits.

It wasn’t hard to pick up Aventurine, he was as light as a feather, it only became difficult when the other tried to untangle himself from Ratios arms. His coworkers gave him a curt good night.

Finally, Aventurine had passed out again and he could continue the journey to his company apartment. Not without a few suspicious stares. Indeed to others it may have looked scandalous, an unconscious, intoxicated omega being dragged along by an alpha-like man.

A sleeping Aventurine carried such a different energy, Ratio was pulled towards that innocent looking face that twisted in discomfort every once and a while, he wished he could end those nightmares.

But Aventurine was an omega, one who often surrounded himself with alphas, letting them cover him in their scent. In what world did he have a chance?

For now, he would care for the omega, what he needed wasn’t a gift, it was affection and guidance. Aventurine needed someone to have his back, someone with a vast knowledge on omegas.

And in between that, he could keep the gambler well fed. If the gambler could eventually find a mate like that, then he would be happy for him. He would… without a doubt.

That afternoon, Aventurine practically crawled out of his bedroom, looking like a walking zombie. Groaning as he clutched his head.

Ratio had just finished making breakfast, the aroma spreading throughout the kitchen. He wasn’t awake long either, the late night messing up his sleep schedule. Late nights tended to only be reserved for marking days.

Aventurine seemed pretty calm for a man who woke up in a stranger's house. As soon as they made eye-contact, the executive froze, rushing to pinch himself.

“What are you doing?” Ratio furrowed his brows, not even attempting to conceal his confusion.

“This- this isn’t a dream?” Aventurine seemed slightly dazed, lost in his own world.

“Yes, Aventurine, you calling me at that late hour was not a dream. Yes, this is my apartment in Pier Point and yes, this breakfast is for you.” Ratio answered any questions the other could possibly ask next.

Aventurine didn’t say anything, simply dragging himself to the table where a bowl of porridge and banana was waiting for him. There was a brief flash of disgust before he dug in. At least he had the sense not to complain.

Ratio would eat later, for now he took great joy in witnessing Aventurines battle with the porridge, it was evident he wasn’t enjoying it but he continued to eat, face scrunching up every once and a while.

“You should wash up after your meal, going out like that is bound to gather unnecessary attention. I should have a spare set of clothes that would be a perfect fit.” He tried not to sound too confronting, he fears if he comments on the mans… scent- Aventurine would feel offended.

“Wow, and here I thought I was looking pretty well-kempt. Does my appearance for the day get zero points, professor? At least I don’t look like I’ve crawled out of a ditch” Aventurine replied in a playful tone, but the shift in his scent suggested otherwise.

If the situation wasn’t serious then he might have laughed at the comment Miss Topaz had made earlier, those two seemed quite close.

“Don’t call me that, gambler. And I was not referring to your looks, they might just scrape nine points, I was referring to the intoxicating pheromones that you have been doused in.” He corrected, hoping that Aventurine didn’t focus too much on the hidden compliment.

Sure, he may or may not have outed himself as an Omega or Alpha but he wouldn’t mind, so long as Aventurine no longer smelled of his colleagues, Ratio never knew he could desire the aroma of fire and honey until now.

“Ohhh, that! Don’t worry Doc, I can hardly notice a thing.” Aventurine said proudly, completely oblivious to the gobsmacked expression on Ratios face.

Was Aventurine being serious? Ratio may have heightened senses but anyone else would easily be able to sense the conflicting aggression of two alphas at odds.

Unless.

That may be the case.

Aventurine may be in a similar situation to him, that would be a comical coincidence. Ratio the man who suffocates in strong scents falls for the man who breathes them like oxygen, unknowing to the hidden world around him. He couldn’t turn a blind eye now, what a careless omega he had found himself mixed up with.

“If you don’t mind me asking, Aventurine, how many sexual health lessons have you been exposed to? These sort of teachings are a must for omegas in particular.”

In his old school they were compulsory, simple work that was soon much more complex in his biology degree. If need be he was more than qualified to educate Aventurines on such topics.

The gambler didn’t seem to understand the implications behind the scenting, whether it was done intentionally or not.

“Hmm, none. Most of the things I’ve learned about my secondary gender are from alphas, some had quite a lot to say… Oh, Jade told me some stuff too.” Aventurine seemed lost in his thoughts for a moment before shrugging it off.

Ratio felt a pang of sadness in his heart for the other. He couldn’t imagine the tragic life Aventurine had led until now, even himself, who had achieved so much in his life, still faced discrimination sometimes. For Aventurine, who had nothing as a child, he more than likely faced far worse people than he had, drilling profanities into  that head of his.

Instead of replying, he let out a long, exhausted sigh.

“Don’t look so… what was it- butthurt?  Ratio, I know the basics.” Aventurine brightly smiled. He was admirable, as strong as steel, to live so carefree. Ratio was the only one concerned between the two.

He half expected Aventurine to question his sudden interest in the topic, or even his own gender, but Aventurine already looked like he was thinking of a new subject to discuss, evident by the lightbulb that seemed to go off on his head.

Before the gambler could open his mouth, he rushed in. “Still, clean up and leave your dirty washing, I need your opinion on the new shower I had installed, you know what these company apartments can be like without refurbishing.”

That was a lie, naturally he wouldn’t spend money on a shower- baths were far more superior-  but if it motivated Aventurine to finally rid himself of that stench- then he could easily feign interest in the gamblers review on a shower.

“Aha, that was your plan all along, wasn’t it? Well if it is anything below ten points I’ll be sure to buy-”

“Gambler.” A warning.

Aventurines mask donned a pout, “Relax, can’t I mess with you a little?”

Little was an understatement. That's all Aventurine seemed to find joy in.

Finally, the man slouched his way to the bathroom. A hangover weighing him down. It wasn’t until the door locked, Ratio let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding. He rushed to check his calendar and it was as he feared, the pheromones had triggered his heat a couple of days earlier.

Only himself was to blame; he chose to keep his stony exterior removed.

The executive may have weak senses but he would certainly notice the powerful scent of an omega in heat. Deciding it was for the best, Ratio left some old clothes by his bathroom door, proceeding to shut himself in his room, collapsing against the back of the door.

Ah, he really hated these heats, they didn’t come often but when they did it was sudden and intense, it was going to be a long week. Aventurine would be understanding if he spilled the truth, the other experienced the same biological cycle as him, but for some reason he didn’t want to expose it to the gambler. This wasn’t like him, lying over something like this, it went against his goals, Aventurine really did bring a new side out in him.

A slow knock at the door grounded him, even if for a moment. Aventurine. Oh how he desired the man more than ever.

“Doc? Are you in there?” His voice was just about audible through the thick door.

By now, his breathing was heavy, it took all his might to steadily reply. “Yes, I unfortunately won’t be able to see you out.”

“I wanted to say sorry,” Aventurine paused as if contemplating his next words. “I didn’t mean to trouble you like this, next time I won’t call, I must’ve been feeling sentimental last night. I’ve dealt with the scent problem, I should have realised you had a sensitive nose.”

Sentimental? Over what , he wanted to ask but now was not the time. Aventurine had opened up and he didn’t want to waste this moment.

“You are… not,” trouble, you never truly have been, sometimes a bit of a pain but- it has never bothered me.  If he had the strength to, he may have revealed the words deeply rooted in his heart to Aventurine.

He thought his voice battery had been drained, however something slipped from his own lips, “Aventurine-”

Stay. Don’t leave me alone.

Ratio bit his tongue, those damn instincts of his. He didn’t want the secret to spill out, he didn’t want to show the other his vulnerable side. Not yet.

“Are you alright in there?”

“Go to the hospital- get assessment.” Ratio didn’t know if it was his heat or the absolute mess of words he uttered giving him flushed cheeks.

If Aventurine replied, he did not register the words. It wasn’t until the gambler was long gone that he had the strength to move. Swiftly, he made his way to the bathroom, the used clothes lay neatly folded on the bathroom counter.

Now, the clothes had been covered in that fiery honey smell, no longer tainted by the pheromones that caused him great distaste. Shamelessly, he brought them close. They contained his most favourite scent after all.

Aventurine wasn’t lying when he said he dealt with the problem.

It was funny how biology worked sometimes, not once had a scent ever enchanted him as much as the omegas had. It was completely against nature, Aventurine was an almost picture perfect omega unlike him who was broken, a scent so weak that it only revealed itself during his heat.

Stories would detail the gravitational pull between Alphas and Omegas, they were attracted to each other as easily as breathing. Not once had he ever felt that until meeting Aventurine, he wanted him. Wanted him so badly it hurt.

Because he knew, Aventurine wouldn’t want him back. The man who could rarely feel the presence of pheromones would always seek comfort in those who could provide powerful ones, potent enough to break through that barrier.

Despite never believing the roles people had pushed onto him. Something inside him was nervous, he didn’t want these feelings to break the fragile bond between them. If he couldn’t call Aventurine his mate, then he would at least support him in any way he can.

His initial thoughts hadn’t changed-

Instead of gifts he would offer the gambler a helping hand, knowledge in times of need and would collect him from wild night outs. So long as Aventurine made it home safely and took care of his body. Ratio would watch him thrive from beside him.

It would only be greedy to wish for more.

As he drifted in and out of conciseness, a vision lingered in his mind. A tranquil landscape, the sun shone on him. It was fiery, but comforting. Bundled in his arms was a life, one so small it couldn’t even move its head on his own.

A child resembling him, strange, this was a first. When the child opened their eyes. He didn’t know what to feel.

Those beautiful eyes, the ones he often dreamed about, now stared back at him from another person. The Avgin bloodline had lived on.

A gentle hand brushed his shoulder.

“There you are my beloved, I’ve missed you.” Said Aventurine, his voice dripping with honey.

Suddenly all the warmth had dissipated, and he was left in his dark, humid room, cold sweat trickling down his body. Oh Aeons, he really was screwed.

Chapter 2

Notes:

wow I cannot believe it took so long to update this. Sorry I planned for it to be last month but then I got a roblox and zelda addiction. Anyways heres the final and yeah I do recommend reading the aven version first but don't worry this is more of a spin- off so it can be read stand alone

Apologies as I have no beta and there may be some inconsistencies because of how far apart I wrote parts but I've done the best I can.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Calling those work night outs he had to rescue Aventurine from a regular occurrence would be an overstatement. Yes, it has happened more than he would usually be able to tolerate.

But Ratio didn’t mind if it was for Aventurine's benefit.

However, the problem became apparent when he could no longer see his duck designed quilt, completely hidden under the Gamblers clothes. Some would say it was a nest, he and the majority would say it is…a collection. One to save in case Aventurine stayed the night at his main apartment.

He was going to return them, just as Aventurine would return the clothes he would let him borrow- many now bought specifically for Aventurine. Yet, he never once asked for his old clothes back, Veritas waited in anticipation for the question that never arose.

There was no surprise, Aventurine likely treated his clothes like disposable objects, with enough money to buy a completely new wardrobe daily. Shame creeped under his skin, he shouldn't justify his strange decision to keep the gamblers clothes.

If Aventurine were to step into his real apartment, he might just notice how heavily his own scent had infiltrated Ratios' apartment. Ratio often found himself picking up a sweet honey aroma on his own body, which he immediately confirmed to be from sleeping surrounded by gambler's clothes.

It wasn’t until Ratio heard the hushed voices of students and scandalous cries of the other professors, that he realised just how deeply Aventurine had ingrained himself in his life. Few had approached him after class to compliment his scent.

Soon the whole campus knew he was an omega, rumoured to have a burnt honey scent. Laughable, so it was. Last night he had met with Aventurine, the man was clearly in pre heat, radiating a scent so strong that it clung to his own skin. Aventurine had unintentionally scented him but people were certain that Ratio was the owner of these pheromones.

Not that he minded, his secondary gender wasn’t intended to be secret to the guild, his weak scent had made him go under the radar often.

Although, there were few speculations that the scent was from his lover. Unfortunately being put in the spotlight for that one specific topic was undesirable. After all, people tended to be possessive over their favourite teachers.

Which is why, Ratio finds himself starting to be spoiled with gifts.

Most of which- judging by the cards and high quality items- had the specific purpose of trying to win over his heart. Now that everyone knew he was an unmated omega, they thought they had a chance.

Ratio sighed loudly to himself, this could become a nuisance, these gifts wouldn’t find their way back to their owners themselves. Some could at least find their way to a charity shop, if their latest grade called for it. Being hit on by students was uncomfortable, even when some matched his age.

Soon he would be off for an indefinite time, Penacony called. As he double locked his door, he hoped this whole craze of trying to court him would end.

Calling himself stressed would be an understatement . Penacony had truly turned into the land of nightmares. Aventurine had almost been lost to the power of nihility, foolish, foolish man. There was nothing more he wanted to do than see him again.

But Aventurine needed some time to himself.

“What is it? That troubles you so?” A robotic voice approached behind him.

Now that Penacony was reaching its conclusion, he and Screwllum were adding some finishing touches to the newest version of the Divergent Universe. Since Ratio had finished noting the latest observation, he placed down the piece of paper containing his notes.

A slight fever was crawling its way under his skin, Screwllum had no secondary gender so the onset of his heat would have no effect. Even as his scent leaked out, it could go unnoticed. Inorganic lifeforms didn’t realise how lucky they had it in this regard.

Though, his internal struggles did not seem to go unnoticed by the genius. He gave a brief explanation on his situation, only of course to gain Screwllum's insight. Perhaps asking the inorganic man wasn’t the greatest idea but this was the closest to an outsider's view he would get at this time.

“To conclude: you are experiencing an attraction for someone who you should be biologically incompatible with?” Screwllum enquired.

“It is not that it is impossible but rather, there are not many cases of this. In fact it is so rare. How can I be sure he would be willing to go against his ‘nature’. The man hasn’t had much education for his gender, I fear that I may unintentionally guide him on a path he doesn’t understand.”  Perhaps he had said too much, he would gradually try to tilt the conversation to another subject.

Screwllum remained silent, as if trying to digest the information, clearly not used to love advice. “I think you have to be more forward. If he believes the same as you, he may never dare confess. At least that is what Madam Herta would do.”

“He is unaware of my secondary gender and even then I have given him numerous omega health related books, does that amount to nothing?” It felt much worse to admit it out loud.

“Solution: invite him on an outing. That way you can interact on a personal level. The life of a businessman is hectic, perhaps another gift would suit.” Screwllum suggested. His idea wasn’t bad, it made sense, though Ratio was slightly offended at the implication Aventurine was uninterested in the textbooks he was handing him.

Sighing, he pulled out his phone, the green dot next to Aventurine's icon indicated he was online. At least this ordeal could be completed quickly. So he shot a quick text- which he most certainly did not rehearse in his head.

Veritas Ratio: Now you can rest, you have done enough. You do not need to reply but just give me a sign. If not, then I will be under the belief that you lost to the nihility, which would be unfavourable.

Gamber(Aventurine):  Aww, Doc. Were you worried about me?

16:08

Veritas Ratio: Gambler.

Ratio glanced at the previous message from Aventurine, he had read it, yes, simply decided not to reply. After all, Aventurine was looking for a reaction, a means to tease him. Was he worried? That's a given. Would he ever admit that to his face? Highly unlikely.

Gamber(Aventurine): Too flustered to get back to me until now?

Veritas Ratio: It appears I have mistyped my last message. It was supposed to be ‘Gambler?’ but now. Forget I asked.

Gamber(Aventurine): I'll take it back!! Come on, what did you want to ask me? I’m all ears, or would it be all eyes?

Veritas Ratio: Saying all ears is perfectly fine, as it is an idiom. Never mind such pointless debates. I was simply going to ask if you wanted to come by the Guild for some afternoon tea. After this mission would be an ideal time.

Gamber(Aventurine): Could it be, are you asking me out on a date?! 🥺

He chuckled at the stupid emoji Aventurine had sent. Just what age did he think he was? He noticed Screwllum carefully observing him from nearby. Quickly he turned back to the phone. A part of him wanted to say ‘yes, in fact come over now,’ but that was just his instincts talking.

Veritas Ratio: Do not get it twisted, this is a simple outing. I may just cancel it at this rate, since you clearly seem to misinterpret my intentions.

Gamber(Aventurine): Wait. Don’t. What I mean to say is I would enjoy that a lot. I have to go now for work related stuff but just send over the details later. Take care of yourself, Veritas.

Aventurines icon turned gray. His hands hovered above his digital keyboard, eventually moving to power off the device. Something always stirred within him when Aventurine used his name. Oh how he would love to hear it in real life, would it sound just as sweet as his scent?

Ratio had to clear his mind, if he kept thinking about Aventurine and that scent that arouses him, his heat might just start early. And if there was one thing he did not want the genius in the room to see was what happened when he gave into his desires.

Now that his work was completed, he moved to gather his belongings, shrugging on his lab coat that lay draped over his chair. “It is time for me to head home, you will be unable to contact me for a few days at the least.”

“Understood. I hope the collaboration gift does not arrive during that time.” Screwllum walked with him to the exit. The man insisted on purchasing a chess set he had been interested in as a thanks for working with him on the Divergent Universe. Though he was hesitant to accept such a gift, Screwllum insisted until Ratio believed arguing back would take more effort than simply accepting it.

“The next time we meet I shall bring it along, it will be an enjoyable activity while we wait for the test results of the Divergent Universe.” When Ratio finished, Screwllum nodded in agreement.

This supposed relaxing afternoon tea couldn't have started more chaotically. It wasn’t until he firmly shut his office door that he could breathe properly again. And Aventurine too, from the looks of it.

The original plan was to meet up earlier in the week but his heat ran on longer than he expected, seemingly an increasing concern after realising his feelings for the gambler. His unforeseen absence also meant that everyone greeted him, had he not been with Aventurine then he most certainly would have worn his stone head.

Or perhaps he should start blaming Aventurine; he'd recently come to the conclusion that the man's pheromones spiked in his presence, dousing Ratio in them enough to attract the masses. People who believed that honey scent was his own.

Then as if the walk hadn’t been exhausting enough, some people had broken into his office, leaving piles of gifts and trinkets that littered his shelves, desk and even a stray spot on his hard floor. They were too much of a hassle to deal with. If Aventurine weren’t here, he could only imagine the disgusting smell of Alpha that would suffocate this place.

It was only when he turned, Aventurine decided to open his mouth, “Wow, doc, you sure are popular, aren’t you? What ever did you do to be graced with such gifts?”

That seemed to hit a nerve, Aventurine may have looked unbothered but the burning of his scent was becoming more prominent, in fact it was almost too much like this. Plus, why did the Gambler care so much about presents he was receiving?! It's not like he’d ever inquired about the man's previous suitors- which he believed would come in plenty for an omega like Aventurine.

So, with mild annoyance and a mind hazy with smoke he commented back. “Is this not to be expected? I was certain that as another young, attractive and unmarked omega, you too would relate?”

“Ratio, you’re an omega ?!”

Wait- did he just admit he was one?! He felt his whole body go cold. Of course he was going to tell Aventurine today but not like this! There was a lingering fear that Aventurine would hate him for lying this long.

“Ah…” that was an accident. He couldn’t bring himself to lie about it any longer. He tried his best to regain his composure before salvaging whatever was left of their conversation, “if I recall our past encounters, I never said I wasn’t one, did I?” Maybe he came off as too defensive or rude.

Now they could move on, cease this extremely awkward conversation. An opening had been presented to Aventurine, now all he had to do was take it. “You must have a long line of suitors then, you could open up a shop with all this stuff alone.” Or not.

What was with his sudden hostility? His scent was still running rampant in his room. Is he jealous…of me? So Aventurine really does desire the attention of many alphas. He’ll admit that the idea left a gaping hole in his chest.

There was no need to argue with Aventurine about something so trivial, he could care less about all these useless gifts. After all, the position of courting him was reserved for one person in this universe and that was the man standing right before him.

If he could just settle said man down, he could finally think straight, finally choose the next best course of action, or as Screwllum said, be more forward.

“I do not know if you are similar to me but I don’t wish to give people false hope, these…offerings are either returned to the sender or donated.” That much was true, he’d spent hours of his time chasing down some ex-students or younger professors to return what they had sent, ones who were unwilling to cooperate were forced to watch him donate to schools or charities. For him, a win-win situation. Watch those who had dared to break into his office suffer while donating to the less fortunate, that would teach them a lesson.

It was then, Aventurines scent had started to calm down like a wild storm that started to settle. Ratio believed this whole ordeal to be over- until Aventurine dropped one last truth.“Funny of you to assume that anyone out there has actually wanted to court me. I mean, there’s way better options than me.”

Aventurine had called him out, he wasn’t wrong, Ratio really had assumed there would be hundreds lined up for even just a chance to be in Aventurine's presence- even putting aside that personality of his. He for one would have rushed to be the first on Aventurine's list.

You have always been my first choice. But he didn’t think it was the appropriate time to say anything. Ratio did feel a little guilty, that much is true. Yet, he couldn’t help the hope that had started to sprout in his mind. First relationships are always important in the development of a person, he hoped he could become that good experience for Aventurine, his first and last.

There were many directions his reply could steer their conversation towards, he just was unsure of which one to take. There was silence. Then a slow knock. Saved by the bell it seems.

Ratio was relieved to have ordered food prior, their conversation would naturally shift as they focussed on their meal rather than anything prior. He had placed the bag onto the table Aventurine had cleared for him. Ratio doesn’t miss the disproving look he directs towards the gifts. He chooses not to comment on it.

Today's meal consisted of three sandwiches from a local cafe on the university campus he had found himself frequenting. They exhibited a large range of different food and drink items. Ratio had found himself enjoying their honey and fruit sandwich, it was fairly unhealthy but just what he needed after a heat.

In fact, honey seemed to be taking over his diet, bath products, his whole life! Now most people in the Guild knew him for having a honey scent because of the Gamblers unintentional possessiveness. Laughable, truly.

And the man had no idea!

To top it off, he had ordered a coffee for the other man, it came with his meal and he did not mind sacrificing his drink for Aventurine. After seeing the plethora of expressions from Aventurine as he widened his eyes from taking a sweet bite only to scrunch it up a second later after taking a sip of the bitter coffee, he was thankful to his past self for the idea.

Ratio couldn't control his amusement; a low laugh escaped his lips. Unfortunately this didn’t go unnoticed by Aventurine and he had to take a bite from his own food, the damage already seemed to be done.

Their conversation for the rest of their meal remained simple and lighthearted- Aventurine had even offered to pay but was instantly denied. Can’t he spoil the man for once? Before long their lunch had come to an end, Aventurine had to get a plane back to pier point while he had some work to do.

When Aventurine made his way out, Ratio made sure to give him the spare sandwich, the other needed it more than him. He didn’t miss the way the director’s clothes hung heavier on him than normal.

The days after that were pretty uneventful. He did his usual, giving lectures, marking poorly done essays and completing any extra tasks the IPC required of him.

Screwllum had told him the chess set should have been delivered but as he sorted through the countless pile of courting gifts, it was nowhere to be found. Shame. He was looking forward to trying it out.

There was one theory he had for where it could have gone… displayed as a sort of trophy in a certain executives home.

Speaking of that man, he hadn’t heard from him since their afternoon tea. The life of a P45 was a busy one but the lack of work night outs was suspicious. He’d hang by his phone whenever he was in Pier Point just in case.

Ratio was on his way back home after a long day of lectures. Something was different. Outside his door lay a small package.

Too large to be a chess set and packaged too flashy for it to be from Screwllum. He picked it up and entered his home. There was no return address on the label, which was strange considering he didn’t speak of his apartment address often.

Had some crazy student hunt him down? Or an insane colleague. It would be best to leave it aside for now. So, he placed it on his living room table and went to prepare his bath.

Ratio didn’t pay much mind to it after that, it lay forgotten like the many receipts he swore he was going to look over later.

Soon, another similar package arrived at his doorstep. This time he caught the courier, questioning him on the origin, the man only stated that he was a part of the Business Consolidation Department and everything else goes against their data policies.

A parcel from Pier Point. Ratio looked down at the crystal wrapping paper, of course he was behind this. He contemplated sending a short text to confirm but decided he would much rather keep his dignity.

Slowly, he peeled back the gifts outer layer. Soon a little rubber duck popped out, it was blue and mirrored the Intellitrons with oceanic features. He hurriedly opened up the second one. Another rubber duck that was bright and colourful, resembling the high rise buildings scattered across Pier Point.

Ha, was this supposed to be a silly gift? Or something more? Considering Aventurine seemed to be glaring at all of the presents in his office- in fact it was laughable how much he had failed at hiding his distaste. Perhaps this was a gift of mockery.

No, the more he thought about it the more he knew Aventurine wouldn’t pull something like this. Unless he had completely misunderstood the whole situation in his office.

Why else did Aventurine get so angry over the gifts, he never seemed interested in relationship conversations before it’s almost like-

Oh. So that’s what it is. How did he not notice before…?

Aventurine wasn’t jealous of him , he was jealous of the alphas who had gifted him. It all made sense, all the flirtatious comments, the teasing, were Aventurine's true emotions. Well. Most of them. There were certainly some comments he’d block out the Gamber for.

Now that he realised, it was painfully obvious. Everyone who knew the two were probably frustrated seeing them dance around their feelings. When they make everything official, Topaz will be the first one he asks.

He held the Pier Point themed duck close to his chest, the place always reminded him of Aventurine. Of course he’ll accept this gift, for it was the most simplest yet telling item someone had ever given him.

But he already loved the man. No gift would ever be needed to earn his adoration.

Ratio would receive more ducks as time slowly went by, his third was from the sporty planet Taikiyan. Another from Penacony. He was slightly ashamed to admit he was looking forward to guessing the next one. Even when he saw one on sale in the guild, he bought it, collecting a few of his own that he intended to give to Aventurine one day… along with all of his clothes.

They hadn’t texted much these past few months but he had invited Aventurine over at the end of the current month, masked as a catch up. Truthfully his heat was due to start and he intended to spend it with Aventurine. That was, if he agreed.

Now that he thought about it,  Aventurines would be due soon. He didn’t intend to keep a schedule of the Gamblers heats but the other had provided it long ago when he was discussing omega related health with him. Despite his initial belief, Aventurines was pretty regular. Only a few times a year but still regular enough that there’s no need for concern.

A part of him was slightly jealous he didn’t have to deal with them as many times annually as he had. Although perhaps he could make Aventurine's heat this time more tolerable. Ratio made his way to the not nest , and grabbed one of the scarves smothered in his own scent.

This was his gift to Aventurine, to help him through his heat, there were some cases of doctors giving scented clothes to patients to stabilise their pheromones, as long as Aventurine didn’t misinterpret his gesture in that way- who was he kidding, Aventurine wouldn’t know about such practices.

He made sure to tightly conceal the scarf in the box, that way none of his scent would leak out. By now he could all but confirm Aventurine's feelings towards him, if that flashy man could put his extravagance aside for a cheaper meaningful gift. Then he too, should stray away from his usual boundaries, his scent covered scarf was nothing special, yes, but it was a bold move.

As a scholar, he valued results. If Aventurine found his way to his apartment in less than a month. Then he will have been successful.

Ratio frantically stored away all of his plates and cutlery. Aventurine was due to arrive any minute now. His preheat condition had never caused him to sleep in so late before. He certainly wouldn’t blame it on his nerves keeping him awake last night- these kinds of feelings did not fill him with anxiety.

The state of one's house greatly reflected the kind of person they were. That is why he did his best to tidy it for his guest with what little time he had left. Of course, that meant sacrificing his own cleanliness.

A chime signalled his time was up.  He trotted over towards his door, slicking back his hair as a last minute attempt to conceal his bed head. Smug as always, Aventurine stood there, roses in hand.

“Why, hello Doc! Looking as handsome as always.” That was mockery, right? Making fun of his messy appearance. Instead of biting back, he grabbed the flowers from Aventurine's hand, they had a lovely smell to them.

“Excuse the mess, I was in the midst of cleaning up.” Ratio moved aside, inviting the executive inside. Ah- he had forgotten to polish his statues! Would Aventurine notice? He did pay close attention to detail.

Since Aventurine was too preoccupied looking around his home he used this time to place the flowers in his sink, he would find a suitable vase for them tomorrow. Assuming he can leave the house.

Before Aventurine sat down, he gently grabbed his arm. Ratio was blunt but not so great when it came to conveying his feelings, and as he had learned from being with Aventurine all this time. Actions mean more to the man than words.

Which is why he led Aventurine to his bathroom. Behind the door was his new collection of rubber ducks, his personal ones already swam idly in his bath. It was amusing to see Aventurine's surprised, slightly flushed face in the corner of his eye. Now was his time to strike.

It might have come across as a little cringey but he turned Aventurine towards him, holding his face close. This way, he would block off any escape routes for Aventurine, he tended to avoid eye contact whenever he was like this.

Gambler - Aventurine. Would you like to be my mate, my omega? In return, I will be yours. These gifts- truthfully, I didn't need them to fall for you. However I found myself excited to see which one you would send next.” He said the truth out right. Yes, this is what he has always done best.

Aventurine went silent, clearly overthinking the situation in his head. No doubt creating meaningless scenarios that he could care less about. Although he had tried to limit his view on anything else, he still managed to trail his beautiful eyes on the floor.  Idiot, you're allowed to be greedy.

“Are you sure? I mean, I’m just a lowly defective omega. I can’t bear kin, my stench is revolting and I can’t provide you with the same fulfilment an Alpha would.”

Preposterous.

Again, Ratio forced the other into a position where he was forced to only focus on him .

It angered him, invalidating his feelings- but he couldn’t blame Aventurine. No, these ideals had been pushed onto him throughout his life. As the last known member of his clan it was only natural that there was an added pressure on him to continue his bloodline.

Ha, if he truly wanted children then it was a good thing his partner was another fertile omega. It was too early now but he wouldn’t mind experimenting with Aventurine in the future. They would be able to have kids and he would gain valuable insight, it was a fair deal.

He hoped Aventurine could see the truth, he didn’t want anyone else, didn’t want an alpha like Aventurine. He wanted him

“Aventurine. None of that is true. Please, do not think of yourself in that way. If I had to seek out Ruan Mei to find a way to remove our secondary genders just so I could prove that to you. Then I would without hesitation. In the bigger picture, your secondary gender means so little.” He had long become comfortable with his omega traits, if it would help change Aventurine's views, then he would do anything he could.

“Why did you hide the fact you were an omega from me?” Ratio could just about pick up the Gamblers words. Not even he himself is sure anymore, he had long stopped thinking about that. So, he went with the best answer.

“For the same reason you were so wary to be with me.”

Aventurine’s face finally morphed into glee. “Don’t worry Doc! I don’t care what you are- in fact being an omega is even better. We can relate to each other.

Hmm, he could still see the slightest bit of doubt on Aventurine's face. “We’ll work on that.”

The tension had drastically eased between them. They had a long, relaxing bath and the Aventurine- beyond his expectations- prepared a meal for them. All these times he had freeloaded off of him and he could cook all this time?!

Ignoring that, Aventurine had agreed to spend his heat with him, so it was important they both filled themselves up now. Though he would soon be filled in another way- Aeons he needs to drown these thoughts!

Ratio coughed into his hand. They were about to enter his bedroom, Ratio was hesitant to open the door, savoring the last of his sanity before he came a horny beast. A click of the door was soon followed by a simple.

“Woah…”

There wasn't anything that remarkable in his room, was there?

Oh no.

How could he have forgotten?!

The Gamblers' Clothes!

Never had he been so embarrassed before, attempting to hide his flushed expression with his hands. Yet, an accusation never made itself known, only a slow, mellow laughter.

“Hahaha, so you’re the reason for my ever changing wardrobe, Ratio? Didn’t know you had a secret naughty side to you.” Aventurine teased.

“You never asked me to return them, there were so many. I had no choice but to store them on my bed.” Ratio tried to defend himself, ignoring Aventurine's later words.

Aventurine scooted over to his bed, lifting up the fabric that was the first in his collection. There's no way he'd memorised that, right?

“So back then, when you kicked me out.” He feigned sadness, “that was because your heat had started?”

How shameful. Back then he was so close to begging Aventurine to stay. He would never admit that to the man. “It should have been obvious, you were simply too oblivious. Also I did not kick you out, you left of your own accord.”

“Oh that reminds me, esteemed Doctor, you were right.”

“Do not call me that. And, please, elaborate. I am no mind reader, there are too many times this could apply.” He was right? Of course he was.

“I went to the hospital to get an assessment and they told me my ability to sense scents is severely lacking. I’ve been taking medications, that must be why you smell sweeter than ever.”

Ratio stumbled as he was pushed into the bed. Where did such a tiny body store all that strength? Some of Aventurine's clothes clung to him akin to the man who used to wear them. It was as though he was being embraced by the enticing smell of honey, far better than any dreams he experienced.

“Rubber duck themed bedding? That's adorable.” Ratio's mind was a haze by now but that smooth, slightly irritating voice was clear as day.

“I am not adorable .”

“Haha, that's not what I said. Although you are cute, Ratio. I mean gifting me books about living as an omega? Honestly I didn’t read any of them, so don't be too angry.” And Aventurine had the audacity to tap his nose, like he was some cat cake.

Sighing, he pulled the man closer, “then I suppose an in- person lesson is needed. My heats tend to last a few days. That should be plenty of time.” Ratio felt Aventurine go still within his hold, his scent steadily increasing.

“Wow, Ratio.” Aventurine pressed a kiss on his neck, “you really do have a naughty side to you.”

Normally he would refute that but he just had no energy to protest left. If he was going to be with Aventurine then he would have to get used to this.  Of course, that doesn't mean he won’t give a stern lecture about his teasing when all of this is over.

Notes:

I gave up with capitalising omega and alpha and taking it off at some parts... and I did have to cut some out like an extra at the end but oh well
