Summary
As the track clicks into its new position, their captor speaks. “Ah,” he says, as though he’s a waiter and Chris has ordered an especially good dish. “I see. You have chosen to save…” He pauses. Flowers could bloom and die and bloom again, in the length of that silence. “Ashley.”
The saw swerves to the right, and Ashley exhales in a rush. Josh is stunned silent. It lasts only a second before he’s screaming again. His fear bleeds into Ashley, and she screams, too.
Chris joins their horrifying harmony, shouting protests as he throws his weight against the door that separates them. Amongst all of it—dull thuds and piercing cries and screeching machinery—Ashley hears a single word, clear as crystal.
Mistake.
