Work Text:
John really should've expected that Bob would cave to his emotional prodding eventually, but he didn't predict that he'd be dragged out of the tower and dangled hundreds of feet in the air by a pissed off Sentry.
"C-c'mon man I was just joking. Can't you take a joke?" John knew he was pushing his luck, but it's not like he was just going to stay silent. He prayed that the fabric of his collar wouldn't tear as Sentry gripped it angrily.
"You feeble, insignificant failure. I'm above you and your idiotic games," Sentry spat before glancing down at the ground. "Maybe I should send you back to your level."
John tried to not look down, but he just couldn't help it. His fear crept into his stomach like a sickness as the cityscape seemed to spiral below him. Shit. He was really in for it now, and if he made it out of this alive, he knew that he'd be the one berated by the team for starting it.
"Okay, okay- I'm sorry. Is that what you want to hear?"
Sentry paused for a moment, studying John's face coldly.
"I don't think you are."
Then, John was falling.
His body spun a few times in the open sky before he was able to get control. This wasn't his first time diving through the air, but this was the first time he did it without a parachute.
"Oh, Jesus. Jesus," he repeated a million times like the word alone would somehow save him.
The freezing air entering his lungs was probably enough to send the average person into shock, but he gritted his teeth and managed to stay lucid. Tiny buildings and cars grew as he approached, and he could almost see people bustling like tiny little ants. The irony hit him as he realized he could never have the view of a god without also falling to failure. Not as Captain America, and certainly not as a father.
Maybe he'd survive the fall, he was a super soldier after all. He almost laughed as he thought, 'maybe I'll see Lemar again.'
The ground was getting so close now.
"Bob," he tried to say, maybe did say, but he couldn't hear anything through the roaring wind.
"Sentry." When that name left his mouth, he felt a grip on the empty A-shaped shield holster on his back. He felt dizzy as he started to gradually slow to an eventual stop midair. Managing the strength, he looked behind him to see that blonde prick smirking.
"Never forget which god you just prayed to."
