Summary
The wind pressed harder now, wrapping around him, pushing at his back. It felt colder. Sharper. Like it was calling him forward.
He looked down.
It was a long way.
And for a moment, everything was still. The kind of stillness that comes just before something breaks. His breathing slowed. His eyes—tired, glassy, and rimmed red—were fixed somewhere between the stars and the pavement.
All of it hurt. More than anyone would ever know.
He shut his eyes and tilted his face to the sky. Moonlight caught on his lashes, painting silver lines across the dried tracks of his tears.
“Sorry,” he whispered again, his voice barely holding together. “I tried.”
And then—
He leaned forward, the tips of his toes curling over the edge, arms loose at his sides, as if the wind could carry him the rest of the way.
The rooftop held its breath.
The world waited.
