"lol" said the squid "lmao"

Summary:

Yoo Joonghyuk has to do a multiplayer game stream with the most annoying person he hasn’t even met

Notes:

Ok I need to lay down a bit of context for this. There's a short story called "The Scorpion and the Frog" and it's a serious moral story but then there's a meme called "Lol said the scorpion lmao" basically if you search those two things up then that's all you'll need

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Yoo Joonghyuk struggled to use the new keyboard. He had broken his old one (from gamer rage of course) and the only spare one his boss Uriel had for him was… a pink mechanical keyboard with custom flower shaped keycaps. While a work of art, it was no good for gaming. And he had also broken his head phones so had to borrow his younger sister’s. Which were neon cat eared headphones.

“Stop calling me a femboy.” He scolded his chat.

To him, the worst part of it wasn’t even the setup that strongly contrasted his personality, but instead it was the game had to be multiplayer. And he was paired with the worst possible person.

“Why are you running in circles?” He asked the other player.

“It’s fun.”

“WE ARE IN A BOSS BATTLE.”

The other person laughed. He’s never met him in real life but Uriel seemed to have an odd favouritism towards him, considering he hasn’t gotten fired yet. His username was Squid which also weirded out Yoo Joonghyuk.

“Ooh what’s over here.” The squid said then jumped off a cliff.

“WHY DID YOU DO THAT?”

“Wanted to check if there was a secret entrance.”

“Will you stop sacrificing yourself for 5 minutes!?”

“Ok I’ll set the timer.” The other boy laughed.

Yoo Joonghyuk looked at the time. 1 hour left. He just wanted to be done with this already. He was relieved when the game split them up for separate quests. Now he can finally do things on his own. He started to zone out a bit as he completed his side of it, not bothering to ask his teammate how he was doing. At least the stupid Squid was quiet for once.

Then something flashed on the screen that distracted Yoo Joonghyuk. The other boy accidentally turned his face cam on. He was… a lot prettier than Yoo Joonghyuk was expecting. He accidentally stopped playing as he just stared at the man for a bit.

Then the other boy finally looked up and went red, quickly turning off the camera.

“Oops.” He mumbled.

The chat begged him to turn it back on, which made Yoo Joonghyuk scold at them. He wasn’t sure why but he really didn’t want so many people staring at the man. But he knew that part of the stream was going to get clipped. And maybe he was going to watch it later. Maybe.

“Are you done?” Yoo Joonghyuk asked. “I’ve finished my side 10 minutes ago.”

“…I need help.”

“Of course you do.” He sighed annoyed. “Where are you?”

“Uhh I’ll send you the map.”

He opened it and wanted to scream. “WHY ARE YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OCEAN? HOW DID YOU EVEN GET THERE?”

“I was wandering around.” He said, carefree. “You need to enjoy the simple pleasures of life sometimes, Yoo Joonghyuk.” He teased.

He sighed and went over to find him, then stopped. “You know my name?”

“Yeah? …Do you not know mine?”

“…”

He stared laughing loudly, which annoyed Yoo Joonghyuk enough to almost break the new keyboard.

“You’re such a team player, aren’t you?” He teased.

“Shut up.” Yoo Joonghyuk grumbled. “Tell me your name then.”

“Squid.”

“You know what I mean.”

“No I don’t think you deserve to know~” He sang.

“I’m going to kill your character when I get there.”

It went silent as Kim Dokja waited in the area for Yoo Joonghyuk to arrive. He’s been watching the gamer’s streams for years, maybe a bit obsessively. When he got his job at Minosoft he didn’t realise it was the same company Yoo Joonghyuk worked for. He might have begged Uriel a bit to pair them together for this stream, but he didn’t need to do much begging as she weirdly agreed with everything he asked for.

“Uriel can I take 6 months off twice a year and still get paid?” He asked once as a joke.

“Of course~!” She beamed, giving him a tight hug.

He made his character run around Yoo Joonghyuk’s character in circles when he arrived.

“Can you… stop…” Yoo Joonghyuk said, exasperated. “Just tell me what you’re struggling with.”

Kim Dokja tried to hold his laughter. He knew this was going to annoy Yoo Joonghyuk for years but it’ll be worth it.

“I need to cross that river for something.”

“Then cross it.” He sighed, wondering why he was wasting his time.

“I keep drowning and I’m on my last life.”

“You’re so…” he grumbled under his breath. “Fine, I’ll cross.”

“No MY character has to get there,” Kim Dokja insisted, “Just carry me across.”

“What?”

“What? It’s just our in game characters, is it too intimate for you?” He teased. He flinched when Yoo Joonghyuk’s character got his sword out. “I’M ON MY LAST LIFE!”

“Can you shut up for the rest of the stream?”

“No.”

“Of course.” He gave up at this point.

Then Kim Dokja watched as the two characters travelled across the river. He giggled as he summoned his sword and killed Yoo Joonghyuk’s character. He smiled and anticipated the reaction.

“WHY DID YOU DO THAT? WE’RE BOTH GOING TO DIE NOW?” Yoo Joonghyuk was in between a mixture of shock, confusion, betrayal, anger, everything.

“Lol.” said the Squid, “Lmao.”

Kim Dokja quit the game before he could get yelled at more. He slumped on his desk and kept laughing. If Yoo Joonghyuk was going to hate him either way, he might as well have some fun with it, right? And because it was all online, there were no consequences what so ever.

His door slammed open. To a very angry Yoo Joonghyuk.

“How- HOW DO YOU KNOW WHERE I LIVE?” Kim Dokja practically screamed, hiding behind his desk.

“Uriel.”

“Uriel how could you?!” He yelled at the ceiling as if she could hear him from there.

“What is your problem?” Yoo Joonghyuk growled, approaching him.

“It’s not my fault you’re so fun to mess with.” Kim Dokja smiled, which was making things a lot worse for him.

He glared at him and they stared at each other for a bit. Both thinking the same thing. He’s so much prettier in real life.

Except Kim Dokja accidentally said it out loud. He went red and covered his face.

“Just, just kill me now.” He begged.

He felt a hand on his head. He was waiting for an attack, and didn’t anticipate the gentle touch stroking his hair. Kim Dokja peeked behind his hands.

“You’re so goddamn annoying.” Yoo Joonghyuk complained under his breath.

Kim Dokja smiled, a very stupid smile Yoo Joonghyuk wanted to get rid of. “Someone needs to bring you down from your ego.” He leaned in his touch. He wasn’t sure what was happening but he wasn’t complaining.

Then Yoo Joonghyuk moved to his desk and turned the small laptop on, which had a large crack going across it. How could anyone use this for anything? I’ll get him a better one.

“What’re you doing?” Kim Dokja asked.

“We need to finish the stream.”

“What? Wait what-“

Yoo Joonghyuk sat on the chair and resumed the stream, picking a different game that didn’t require multiplayer but was much harder.

“Here, I’ll teach you to not suck at games.” He grumbled.

Kim Dokja was wearily expecting some sort of trap but at the same time he had his lifelong crush right next to him and did not want to let this opportunity slide. He casually sat on Yoo Joonghyuk’s lap without asking then turned on the face cam.

“Sorry about that, we’re playing a different game now.” He casually said to the very confused chat.

He was doing a bit better at this new game, but felt like he had to concentrate or else Yoo Joonghyuk might actually kill him and not in game this time.

“Why are you so quiet?” Yoo Joonghyuk complained.

“Didn’t you want me to be?”

“Talk about something.” He commanded, not elaborating on why.

Kim Dokja smiled and spared teasing him for now to ramble about whatever was on his mind. When he reached the end of his quest, Yoo Joonghyuk’s hand suddenly went over his on the mouse. He was so flustered to move and before he knew it, his character died in the game.

“W-wha- WHY DID YOU DO THAT?”

Yoo Joonghyuk simply smiled at him. “It was funny.”

Notes:

And then they made out

Also there’s nothing wrong with guys liking stereotypically girly things I just think it’s funny to make yjh use a pink setup (not because he’s a guy but because he’s so edgy)
