Meme

Summary:

Sidon shows Mipha a meme from his timeline, but she doesn't quite grasp the concept, much less the joke. Luckily, Sidon is here to explain. He wishes he always could be.

Work Text:

A meme of a bokoblin from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. It is pointing at the camera and screaming. There is text on the image reading, "Me every damn morning".

Mipha squinted at the Sheikah Slate. “I don’t understand.”

“I can explain it to you. What part do you not understand?”

“Well, what does this bokoblin have to do with the words on the screen?”

“It’s a reaction image,” Sidon explained. “It means that when you wake up in the morning, you feel the way that this bokoblin looks. He’s screaming and pointing, and it implies that the meme’s creator feels like screaming and pointing in the morning because he’s so tired.”

“How do you get the words onto the photograph?”

This was harder to explain than Sidon thought it would be. He frowned. “I do not know.”

“Oh. Could you please explain the joke again?”

Sidon pointed to the words. “When it says, ‘me every damn morning’, it means that every morning, the creator of the meme feels the way this bokoblin is acting. Because the bokoblin is screaming and pointing, we can assume that it feels cranky, and thus we can infer that the creator feels cranky in the morning.”

She nodded seriously. “Did the bokoblin make the meme?”

“No.”

“Who made it?”

“Link did, I believe. The Link from my time.”

“How did he get this photograph? It’s taken from so close up. Why would he go so close to a bokoblin for a photograph? I know he’s reckless, but he isn’t stupid.”

“In my timeline, he had to live in the wild after sleeping for one-hundred years, remember? He had to go into bokoblin camps for food and supplies.”

She frowned again, then handed the slate back to him. She said nothing for a moment, then spoke quietly. “Ah. Yes. I keep forgetting that in your timeline, we… we all die. And you, Link, and Zelda are left all alone. I enjoy the joke. Thank you for showing it to me.”

The air had gained a profound sadness. It reminded Sidon of his timeline, where Mipha had died, and everyone had a hint of sadness in their hearts. No matter what happened, no matter how many years passed since the Calamity, there was grief around the corner. He wished he could fix it. He wished he could fix Mipha’s sadness now, in her timeline, and everyone’s sadness back in his.

The best he could do, he reminded himself, was to enjoy these moments. Savour every second he had with his dear sister. He was unsure of how long he would get to live in this world he was visiting, and he wanted to make the most of it.

He wished he could stay here, in this time. He feared that when he got back home, he would mourn her all over again. He would be left with the knowledge that it could have ended differently. It was comforting to know that it had, in some world. It was devastating that that wasn’t the world in which he lived.

He decided to change the subject. “I have another meme to show you!”

Mipha perked up. “Oh, yes please!”

When she saw it, she squinted again. “I don’t understand.”

Sidon smiled sadly. “I can explain it to you.”
