Chapter Text
Tonight was just a regular night, except I had decided that after the broadcast, I would step out to the cool sand dunes. Carlos was asleep, however, so I could not go with him. That’s okay, though, I heard he had a rather long day back in his lab, full of beakers and shiny chemical vials…I wonder sometimes what exactly he makes in there, but I’m sure that Carlos, and his perfect, perfect hair, always makes brilliance.
“Goodnight, Night Vale, goodnight.” I signed off as the Night Vale Community Radio theme played and the broadcast ended. I gently took off my headphones and stretched back in my chair. The weather was a lovely ebony, with the glow cloud making its usual errands…all hail the glow cloud…Anyway, I then stood up and walked out of the station, careful not to interrupt station management’s thrashing business, and I looked out towards the wonderful town. “What a beautiful little desert town,” I said, as I went to my car, turned it on, and began to drive out to the cool sand dunes.
However, I had forgotten to fill up the gas tank this morning, meaning I’d have to find a gas station soon. I kept on driving, the sounds of the car evident in my ears as the thick blackness of night blanketed the sand with a gentle drift. Eventually, I found a gas station, and I parked the car at the pump, filling it with gas and paying the correct price. I began to make small notes of details, since there was not much to do at this time. The long road stretched out in the vast expanse of red-ish sand, the wind making a small but not too small breeze as the stars twinkle in the night of the deserted land, the quiet sounds of wind and the occasional tumbleweed drifting through as the car radio played.
Above me, in the night sky, I saw two shooting stars wirr past like lightning. I made wishes for Carlos and Khoshekh as I decided to go inside of the gas station. The doorbell chimed a typical low hum of eons past as I took in the surroundings of many snacks and chips, accompanied by drinks to match. The cashier gave a glance and a friendly smile, his 16 eyes blinking at me. I wonder how he made his glasses, but I admire the craftsmanship.
I grabbed a Coca-Cola bottle and some chips and then placed them on the counter. The cashier gave out a low bellow as he scanned the items. I am taking that as a compliment. After I paid, I walked back to the car, the car door clicking open smoothly and the car coming alive with a deep rumble.
I got into the car and then drove near the cool sand dunes, out into the sand wastes, into the area between Night Vale and Desert Bluffs. Ew…Desert Bluffs. But I did not focus on that terrible town, I stopped the car once all I could see was the stars, the twinkling lights blinking above me, as if they were having a conversation.
