The Station's been running without interns for the past ten days due them drowning, accidentally travelling through dimensions, and doing other intern-typical activities.
Coincidentally, as those ten days went by, Cecil looked more and more like the walking dead.
He was paler than Carlos has ever seen him. His bones were starting to show through the skin, even though he inhaled dinners and asked for seconds. He was jittery—"I'm fine, dear Carlos"—with bags under his eyes—"I promise you, there's no reason to worry"—with his eyes always searching.
It was almost like Cecil needed something other than food, and Carlos had a very nightvalian guess about what exactly it was.

“In other news, a new man came into town today.” Kevin couldn’t help his grin, but only Vanessa could see it, so that was alright. “Who is he? What does he want from us? Why his perfect and beautiful smile? Why his perfect and beautiful teeth? Teeth like a Steinway…”
Kevin glanced at his phone as it lit up with a new message. Carlos had sent him an emoji of a person in a labcoat and goggles giving a thumbs down. Rachel, one of the scientists sharing the camper with him, also sent a text, but hers was an image of Carlos’ head in his hands. His ears were noticeably red. Carlos was just too cute.
Vanessa knocked on the window of the control booth, and Kevin mouthed an apology at her for getting off track.
“He says he is a scientist. Well, we have all been scientists at one point or another in our lives. But why now? Why here? And just what does he plan to do with all those beakers and humming electrical instruments in that camper?”

What Carlos knows is that not a single soul in Night Vale can remember what Cecil looks like once they take their eyes off him.
What Carlos doesn't know is that wearing that disguise feels like draping a thick layer of cloth over the entire body—all Cecil's senses get numbed, dimmed. Plainly speaking, nothing is enough to get Cecil off while he pretends to be human. And when the disguise is off, he looks —well, different.

“You’re weak,” Kevin said easily, like it was barely a thought at all; a fact that he had already come to accept. “You couldn’t kill me, and Janet viewed you as such a small threat that she followed you to this endless desert without a second thought.”
Cecil opened his mouth to protest, but then he thought about the past couple of months and closed it again. He hadn’t been able to defend science, he hadn’t been able to chase out Janet and the University of What it Is, he hadn’t even been able to punch that one smarmy scientist in his stupid toady face.
“You are my past imperfect self,” Kevin reached out and cupped his face in his warm hands. “I want to help you get stronger.”
Cecil didn’t try to pull away. He couldn’t even bring himself to look away from the empty voids on Kevin’s face. He blinked rapidly, desperately trying not to cry, because—because Kevin was right. He was weak. He was stuck as the passive observer so often that he had grown comfortable in the role.

warning I am on episode 27 (first date) and have not seen anything about the series other than some fanart and the fact that Cecil X Carlos is either canon or 100% accepted fanon.The name is Oleander because it's a poisonous plant. and uhh murder by poison or something idk,
I recommend listening to Murder, Murder. From the Jekyll and Hyde 19something musical (specifically the version from the 19somethings) for the best ambiance.
I HAVE NEVER WATCHED MURDER ON THE ORIENTAL EXPRESS NOR HAVE I CONSUMED MEDIA ABOUT IT SO ANY RESEMBLANCE IS PURELY COINCIDENCE I SWEAR ON MY HONOR AS A FIC WRITER.Also please let me know if I accidentally added the wrong carlos to the tags I havnt gotten far enough in the story to learn his last name yet.

Carlos is pretty sure that this should be weird. So far it's just been Carlos and Cecil, or Carlos and Kevin, but it had never been all three of them like this. Tonight was supposed to be Carlos and Kevin, but when Cecil had gotten home and saw them making out on the couch he had ordered them into the bedroom… and then he had followed.
He wouldn't pretend that some of his fantasies hadn't gone down a similar vein, but it wasn't something any of them had discussed. This was his first time doing anything more than kissing Kevin, and Cecil was right there, watching and whispering all the things that would help Kevin take Carlos apart.
