Before and After March: Every Version of Us

Summary:

Resident Playbook in alternate universe where Sa-bi didn’t mean to fall in love - not with anyone, and definitely not with the charming, chaos-coated OBGYN resident who wore mismatched socks and smiled like he had secrets worth keeping.

Jae-il didn’t mean to stay - not in the hospital, not in the city, and not for a girl who color-coded her entire life. But then came night shifts, coffee breaks, grief that cracked them open, and the soft, steady magic of falling together anyway.

From awkward first team dinners to sunrises shared in silence, from karaoke confessions to healing through heartbreak, their story unfolds in quiet promises and accidental tenderness.

In love, in loss, and in every kind of ordinary.

This is a story about falling first, falling hardest, and choosing each other - again and again - through all the soft chaos of life.

The hospital’s corridors pulsed with fluorescent light and urgency. Sa-bi moved like a shadow, steps measured, white coat crisp, clutching her clipboard like armor. She hadn’t slept properly in days, but her mind was sharp, her notes precise.

She barely looked up when someone slid beside her during rounds, chart in hand and hair just a little too perfect to be accidental.

“You’re new,” he said easily, as though he had all the time in the world.

She glanced sideways, and there he was - Um Jae-il. A face that had once been splashed across subway ads and magazine spreads, now tilted toward her with mild curiosity and a stethoscope around his neck.

“I’m Sa-bi. First year.”

“Jae-il. Third year.” A lazy smile. “Don’t worry, I’m nicer than I look.”

She didn’t reply, only nodded, gaze already dropping back to the patient file.

But later, when she caught him humming to himself outside the delivery ward - something suspiciously like a HI-BOYZ chorus - she allowed herself the smallest smile.

Maybe this residency wouldn’t be so bad after all.

To visualize Kim Sa-bi and Um Jae-il, here’s a description that captures their personalities and background.

Kim Sa-bi

Age: 24 years old

Profession: First-year OB-GYN resident

Personality: Quietly intense, book-smart, socially reserved but deeply empathetic overachiever

Visual Style: Understated and tidy; always wears her white coat perfectly

Appearance:

Hair: Straight, shoulder-length dark brown or black hair, tucked neatly behind her ears. Clean and minimal styling that suggests practicality and simplicity.

Eyes: She wears round wire-frame glasses, adding an intellectual, bookish charm. Her expression is composed, alert, and thoughtful.

Skin Tone: Fair complexion with a healthy, even glow.

Build: Slim and petite, with a slightly narrow frame. Her posture is upright but not stiff - suggesting quiet confidence or polite attentiveness.

Visual Style / Clothing (off-duty): Neutral-toned cardigans, pressed slacks or jeans, soft blouses - clean and minimal

Aura: Thoughtful, reserved, and slightly bookish. She exudes the air of someone earnest and intelligent - low-key but composed, with a quiet presence that draws respect rather than attention. Looks like the kind of person who stays late to double-check her charts and carries emergency highlighters in every pocket

Um Jae-il

Age: 28 years old

Profession: Third-year OB-GYN resident, former K-pop idol (HI-BOYZ)

Personality: Charismatic, laid-back but sharp, emotionally intuitive

Visual Style: A little too stylish for a hospital, unintentionally draws attention

Appearance:

Hair: Soft, curly dark brown hair with natural volume. His hair is slightly tousled, giving off a relaxed, easygoing vibe.

Eyes: Though his expression is neutral, his eyes appear observant and quietly expressive. He’s looking slightly upwards, giving a contemplative, serene impression.

Skin Tone: Light skin tone with a natural, healthy flush.

Build: Tall and slim with broad shoulders. His frame is lean but not overly muscular—more on the wiry and graceful side.

Visual Style / Clothing (off-duty): Casual luxury—loose-knit sweaters, joggers, denim jackets, and vintage sneakers

Aura: Calm, approachable, and quietly charismatic. He has a natural charm, the kind that doesn’t try too hard. There’s a warmth and easy confidence about him - someone used to attention but no longer chasing it. The kind of guy whose charm you notice even before he speaks - brightens a room without trying

Together, they look like polar opposites on the surface - her with structured simplicity, him with relaxed layers - but there's a visual harmony between them. Like balance. Like two puzzle pieces that just fit.
