The sun was shining beautifully. Not too hot, not too bright, but just right. The air had a lovely breeze, and the clouds were as puffy as ever. It was a great day to be outside, and lucky for Oh Yi Young, she gets to leave the hospital early today. Her husband, Professor Ku Do Won promised to pick her up, because they have a special plan in the afternoon.
As Yi Young walked past the wooden wall of Jongno Yulje, she stopped for a while to see the big screen. There, she read who was this month's best employee and the testimony. Being able to stay at Jongno for a long time really wasn’t part of her plan, but it was fate. Just like fate led her to Do Won.
“Planning to be doctor of the year?” a familiar voice asked from behind. Yi Young turned around and her heart melted with a smile on her face. Her husband was wearing her favorite navy blazer, white shirt, with his new pair of glasses they just picked out last week.
“Yaebo!” Yi Young said as she walked to his open arms and warm hug. As he gently kissed Yi-Young’s side temple, he placed one hand around her and one hand on Yi Young’s baby bump.
“Hi baby, it’s me Appa , Appa is here to pick up Eomma,” Do Won said, giving it a gentle rub. The little baby kicked once, paused and then kicked again twice as Yi Young laughed. “Okay, someone’s happy to hear her dad’s voice,” Yi Young said smiling.
“That’s my little girl. How about you? Happy to see me?” Do Won said, taking Yi Young’s bag, still having his arm around her as they walked to the parking lot. Yi-young playfully pinched her husband and answered “no, I’m really bored of you actually,” but wrapped her arms around his waist. Their height difference was enough for Do Won to give her another kiss on her forehead while walking.
“Of course you’re bored. I don’t work here anymore. I don’t know how you get through the day,” Do Won said, teasing her.
“Hey! I have a blast all the time, it’s you who’s bored in the main branch,” Yi Young replied.
“No, I have Prof. Yang, he’s nice to talk to. And I have lunch with Prof. Lee. and his wife Prof. Chae. They're hilarious,” Do Won said.
“That they are,” Yi-young said, agreeing.
Do Won parked his car at their favorite spot. The spot in front of the back lobby. Where he gave Yi-young their first couple rings back in 2024, kissed under the beautiful snow, followed by the whole hospital finding out about their viral heroic video. He’ll always remember it because from that day on, it was the start of many beautiful things for him and Yi Young. As they reached their car, Do Won opened the back door for Yi Young.
“I can’t sit in the front?” Yi-young asked.
“You know it’s dangerous. Besides, I get to treat you like a princess. Come on, I’ll put your stuff in the passenger front seat,” Do Won said with a smile, trying to convince Yi-young.
“First I’m not allowed to drive anymore, and now I can’t be beside you in the passenger seat?” Yi Young said, giving a sad baby face.
“Yaebo, pleasee. Look at you, you’re due in weeks!” Do Won said, taking both of his wife’s hands.
“Huftt. Okay, fine.” Yi-Young said in defeat, leaving a big smile on Do Won’s face.
He then closed the door, started the engine, and made sure Yi Young put her seat belt on.
“Where to, Madam?” Do Won said in a French accent.
Yi-young couldn’t hold her laugh. “Main branch Yulje please,” she said, still laughing.
“Ahh, going to the doctor I see?” Do Won said.
“Yes. Me and my husband are both doctors, but we still see doctors”
“Well, even doctors need doctors, right?”
“We do love our Professor Seo,” Yi Young said.
“That we do,” Do Won said.
“You must be tired driving from the office to Jongno back to the office,” Yi-young said.
“No, I love picking you up. It gives me an excuse to get out of work,” Do Won said.
“Why is Prof Seo in your branch today again?” Yi-young asked.
“Surgery, a VIP client. Prof Yang is on a holiday so she’s filling in.” Do Won said.
“Ahh, I see. Well, it’s an excuse for me too,” Yi-young said looking out the window.
“After our checkup, do you want to go somewhere?” Do Won said.
“Let’s have a picnic! I know a park near there. It’s big, it has a hill and a pond. We can buy food and just sit and talk,” Yi-young said.
“Okay, we can do that. The picnic mat is at the back and my schedule is all clear. I’m all yours today,” Do Won said.
“--and forever,” Yi-young said, fluttering her eyes at him.
“Hahahha, forever and ever,” Do Won said, grinning.
“Why don’t you take a nap and I’ll wake you when we’re there. I know you’re tired,” Do Won added.
Hearing that made Yi-young smile. Never in a million years would she imagine marrying someone like Ku Do Won. Kind, considerate, hard working, a provider, and soft spoken. The most important of it all, she loves how her husband is supportive and always ready to be her shield, even way before she dated him.
“You’re sure? You don’t want to tell me stories?” Yi-young asked.
“We have the whole day for that. You go take a nap,” Do Won insisted.
“Okay, I will,” Yi-young said, happily closing her eyes and taking a nap.
