Amelia puts her coat on, grabs her purse and heads out. She exchanges a few friendly goodbyes with nurses and doctors, and a few greetings with colleagues who are about to start their morning shift.
Her phone chimes as she gets in the elevator. Jo’s asking her if she could get some milk and bread on her way to her place. She checks the time. 7:10 am. She has just enough time to stop by the store, drive to Jo’s, and then take Scout to preschool. She confirms the delivery of the goods.
“Goodbye, Dr. Shepherd,” a nurse gets off on the second floor, leaving Amelia to enjoy the rest of the ride on her own.
Her phone is slipped back into the pocket of her coat.
Finally, the elevator door opens on the first floor and Amelia freezes.
It’s infuriating how feelings are uncontrollable sometimes, when the situation ambushes someone.
When the person whom Amelia didn’t think she would see this Wednesday morning is standing in front of her, she suddenly doesn’t know what she wants to do. Does she approach and kiss her or yell at her? Wrap her arms around her or scream at her? Tell her she hates her or that she....
And because Amelia wants to do all and none of the above, she does what’s easiest in the moment – with a racing heart and trembling lips, she walks past Monica and out of the hospital.
