Summary
Ellwood is in Maitland’s bed, but all he can think and talk about is Gaunt.
AKA John Maitland is both a saint and the loneliest character in the book.
“You’re beautiful inside and out, Sidney Ellwood. You have me thoroughly under your spell.” Maitland turns them over so that he’s on top of Ellwood, pinning him to the mattress.
The weight of Maitland on top of him is enticing, but it’s when Maitland slides a muscular thigh between Ellwood’s legs that Ellwood quickly grows hard. “Take me,” he says, like it’s a dare. Anything to distract himself from the lead weight in his heart that reminds him Maitland has given Ellwood all of himself, but Ellwood has given him less in return.
“I know you imagine him sometimes,” Maitland says.
Ellwood freezes. There’s no romantic quotation for crushing your lover’s heart by imagining they’re another.
