Summary
Jennifer Jareau is eighteen years old, with a brilliant mind she desperately tries to hide from the world — an attempt to shield herself from the cruelty that comes with the label of “prodigy.” She was admitted to university early but dreams only of the ordinary: small parties, idle conversations, the right to fail. At home, however, this pursuit of normalcy is seen as an affront. Her mother despises her for not living up to expectations, and JJ’s loneliness becomes almost a second skin.
Emily Prentiss is twenty and in her third year of linguistics. Daughter of a diplomat, she speaks five languages, carries the right last name, and has a bank account that seems endless — yet silently, she bears absences money cannot fill. Intelligent, sarcastic, gothic inside and out, she lives in a world of well-crafted masks and sharp ironies, never letting anyone get too close.
They come from opposite worlds. JJ seeks to disappear. Emily, at times, longs to be truly seen.
And then, in some ordinary semester, their paths cross.
