Work Text:
“Put down the knife, Fuuta Kajiyama.”
Amane was staring gently at him, but he couldn’t look her in the eye. Scrunched up in the corner of his cell he held a knife with both hands, tightening his grip more and more with each second that passed by.
Was he innocent or guilty this time? He didn’t really know. The voices were so many that at some point he started ignoring their words.
But the noise was still there.
He felt Amane still staring. Was she terrified? Entertained? Fuck if he knew. That kid was oftentimes unreadable.
“Fuuta Kajiyama” Amane repeated. Her voice was emotionless; more demanding than anything else.
He didn’t have time for this shit.
“Just… leave me alone” he murmured under his breath.
Amane kept silent for a minute. Fuuta could sense her religious speech coming just around the corner. This wouldn’t be the first time, either.
“I will leave you alone if you put down the knife” Amane said simply.
“Why…?”
“A human life must follow its given destiny. Disturbing one’s destiny is…”
“I don’t care, brat,” Fuuta said, getting more and more impatient. “I don’t care about my destiny! I’m a pathetic lowlife, just…!” He held the knife closer to his chest, “Just let me end it.”
He closed his eyes; that should have been enough to scare the kid off.
But of course, she talked again.
“Then let me put it this way,” the girl said. “You have done wrong and sinned in your past. But you can change if you desire to do so. There is a bigger judgement than that of MILGRAM.”
“I don’t ca…!” Fuuta began to reply.
“Even if you do not care about Him, there’s people who still care about you, people who need you. There is a world in need of salvation waiting outside of this prison.”
She continued; “If you do not care about your destiny, I will. Pain should not be suffered alone.”
“I… I…” Fuuta mumbled. Why did she care?
“I think everyone deserves a chance to get on the right path. Even I, even you.”
He heard her breath deeply. “If I can become a good person, if I am able to help you, then we can both bring ourselves one step closer to salvation.” She stood closer to him and put a hand on his shoulder. “You are not alone in suffering. Please put down the knife.”
Fuuta finally looked at her. She wasn’t calm; that wasn’t the right word. She looked resigned, tired and scared. But she was still standing, despite it all.
Could it be true? Could she save him from his pain?
He slowly put down his knife beside him and hugged tightly on his legs.
“How?” He asked. “How can I be saved?”
Amane smiled and sat by his side.
“You have already taken the first step towards salvation.” She closed her eyes. “Pain should not be suffered alone, and now you are no longer alone. That is a start”.
And he believed her. He sat in silence while she began telling him about rules and ordainments. It was a lot to take in, but he listened.
He was no longer alone, and that was a start.
