Summary
Few know this place—the Vatican, the city, the soul beneath it—with the intimacy that Thomas Lawrence does.
Not even the most senior cardinals. Not even the Curia’s oldest shepherds.
Certainly not Innocent—Vincent—who walks these halls still unaware.
He does not know the stories.
-- OR --
The Vatican is a liminalish space, and they're all living in it.

Summary
“To be frank, Thomas, you are nothing and no one outside the Vatican,” the late Holy Father had continued. “You have a family, that is true. But you must be distant person to them by now, a tragic ghost that sends them Christmas presents and writes them e-mails. I do not say this to be cruel, I am just telling you the facts of the matter. I will hear no argument; you will continue to serve the Church and God as you have done all your career.”

Summary
True to the name of his papacy, Vincent Benítez is untainted, noble. He is not the ocean, but the river. A river that does not surge or waver, but persists to flow in its chosen direction, determinedly. Unlike the ocean, that fickle, turbulent goddess of Fortuna, he will do his duties and meet his due.
But when Pope Innocent shines, into which shadow does the man Vincent Benítez hide?
If it means he may comfort the loneliness of the river, it wouldn't be so bad to drown in it, Thomas thinks.
(Thomas is drowning in his newfound love for Vincent, while Vincent is drowning in the loneliness of his position. They find each other—they drown together.)
