Work Text:
The worst part of being awake at night with nothing to do is having nothing to distract from your thoughts.
He didn’t have any unfinished projects to work on, and he knew better than to start something new in the middle of the night. That never ended well.
Of course, he should be sleeping. But that wasn’t happening anytime soon.
With a sigh, Yellow pushed himself up and stretched. He looked around for a moment before getting up and leaving his room. Maybe he’ll just… check on the others, or something. Yeah.
Second was completely out. He’d like to keep it that way. That was not a wrath he wanted to face. Green and Blue both stirred when he opened the door, but fortunately stayed asleep. He was just about to close Red’s door when the other let out a soft, questioning noise.
Shit.
“Sorry,” Yellow murmured, trying not to disturb him more than he already had. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
Instead replying, Red sat up and made grabby hands at him. After a moment of hesitation Yellow stepped over to the bed and sat down. The other boy promptly snuggled into his side.
“So why are you up?” he asked after getting settled, voice still tinged with sleep.
Yellow thought about lying, but quickly realized there was no point. Red would definitely see through him. “…thinking.”
“Bad thoughts?”
“I guess.”
Silence fell between them for a little while. He didn’t mind- the warmth against his side was comforting enough.
“Yels?” He looked down to meet the ruby-colored eyes peering up at him. “I don’t think you realize how awesome you are.”
How can I be awesome if I’m useless?
“Well, I-“ He struggled for words for a moment. “I can’t really compare to you guys…”
“You can build things the rest of us can hardly dream of,” Red pointed out adamantly. “But that isn’t what matters, because you’re you and that’s enough for me.”
“…really?” Yellow found it hard to believe that he meant anything without his skills.
“Really. And I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise. You included.”
That pulled a small laugh out of him. He really shouldn’t be surprised. “Okay, okay, I get it. Don’t attack me.”
Red huffed and leaned into him, dragging both of them down onto the bed. Despite his insomnia, Yellow felt his eyelids growing heavy.
Maybe he does have some good ideas late at night.
