Debate

Summary:

Dating an alian especially with Supergirl at some disadvantage, Like the hasty departures, the latenesses, the absences, the danger, but there are also positives, like a good fresh breakfast straight out of the best bakery, except that Kara is very (too much) critical when it comes to food.

Notes:

As you must read often, my first language is not English, sorry for the mistakes.

I wrote this a long time ago, I know that salted butter is not reserved for the French, but we can say that it is of better quality here, with a better taste, it is a bit of a flagship element of Bretagne.
It's weird to say that here, but I swear that the context comes in the fic.

Work Text:

In a moment of great generosity, although it was nothing exceptional, Kara decided to get up early to go to the best French shops to buy all the best things for made the Lena's breakfast, which she had too often skipped, especially when the two had spent their night at the blonde's house, apparently the wide range of children's cereal choices was not food up to the standard of her rich girlfriend.

She thought of everything: bread, croissants, pain au chocolat, even butter and jam, and especially wine, which the brunette appreciated after a hard day.

After spreading everything out on the kitchen island so the Luthor could choose what she wanted when she got up, the blonde made herself comfortable on the couch, one ear turned toward the room where Lena would be so she could welcome her properly and not sprawl be on the couch in front of Disney.

When Kara heard the sound of sheets sliding, accompanied by an impact like the wooden floor, the blonde could tell that Lena had just sat down. Kara stood up, eager to show her friend what she had do.

With her hair disheveled, Lena left the room stretching her arms diagonally, yawning slightly, wearing a simple plain T-shirt she had borrowed from Kara and a pair of gym shorts. But what made the reporter laugh was seeing two different socks on each of the CEO's feet, one printed with red hearts and the other with fried eggs.

Clearly, the newcomer didn't miss her girlfriend's barely concealed amusement.

-"I didn't want to wake you, so I took the one I had on hand. You know how I can have cold .”

After feeling compelled to justify herself, her gaze fell on what Supergirl had proudly prepared for her. Lena moved closer to the Danvers with a smile before kissing her.

-"I think than I can forgive you making fun of my socks" Lena announced, grabbing a croissant and biting into it.

- "Technically, it's mine, like everything else you're wearing."

- "And you're mine, so I don't see the problem." She put down the croissant, which was just missing a bite, and settled into a chair to pour herself a coffee, as Kara watched.

-"Are you planning on joining me or continuing to observe me pointlessly?"

-"Hey!" the hero said indignantly. "It's not pointless. If I'm going out with you, it's for a good reason: to allow my eyes to see beautiful things.”

-"Sure, just put your eyes in your pockets and come sit down " sighed Lena. "Sometimes I wonder if you don't have a child stuck in an adult's body."

-"Say right away that I'm immature!"

-"Shut up and eat." With that, she stuffed a slice of buttered toast into the blonde's mouth, who instantly began to chew, only to spit it all out.

-"What the hell is this?" Kara asked her, a grimace lingering on her face.

-"A piece of bread and butter," the billionaire replied as if it were obvious.

-"Well, your bread and butter have a problem. I felt like I'd dived into the open sea and drank ten cups.”

-"It's called semi-salted butter, darling," the CEO explained, a big smile on her face, only to annoy the blonde further.

-"Since when do you put salt in butter? Pass me that butter," she ordered, which Lena did, allowing her to see Supergirl's face go from annoyance, to reflection, then understanding, and finally indignation.

-"How could they dare?" She abruptly stood up from her chair, ready to leave, demanding an explanation.

-"There's unsalted butter and K' semi-salted butter. You, who love food so much, should know that."

-"I eat asians food, you're the one who eats French food... I'll never see France the same way again," she announced, shaking her head in disappointment.

-"You're not the only one who doesn't like it; it's a topic that sparks a lot of debate there too."

-"There shouldn't even be a debate, butter is butter. You want it to be salty, put it in salt, simple and effective! I'm not surprised the French are in a bad mood in the morning; they're made to dip salted buttered toast into their sweet coffee.”

This time, Lena couldn't help but laugh. "the tastes and colors, Kara, you should eat that pain au chocolat."

-"it's a chocolatine," the blonde corrected proudly, unable to do so regularly given that she'd fallen in love with a genius who knows almost everything about everything.

-"What do you do when you go to France?" the Luthor asked, genuinely concerned about the journalist's general knowledge.

-"I eat, obviously."

-"Do you talk to people a bit?" she continued, wondering why she bothered trying to understand when the answer seemed obvious.

-"Of course not, I only speak English and Spanish, obviously Kryptonians, but that's totally useless here, it's the France, they don't speak any of that." she said, biting into what she called a chocolatine. She abruptly raised her index finger. "Oh, but I know how to say 'Bonjour, s'il te plaît, merci and au revoir.'" Obviously, Lena couldn't blame her for anything, especially not when she gave her one of her brightest smiles.

-"All to buy politely."

-"Of course, politeness is very important."

-"If you had taken the trouble to understand them, you would know that this thing, called pain au chocolat, with the exception of a few regions of France, is something that causes as much debate as cereal before or after milk." Lena took the time to calmly explain, her breakfast gift turning into a lesson on daily debates in France when she would have preferred to hear her describe the beautiful landscapes she had seen, or better yet, to kiss her…

But that wasn't the case.

-"I eat cereal straight from the package," she said as naturally as possible. With that, she went to the cupboard to grab the package and slide her hand inside. "Do you want some?" The Luthor shook her head. "Anyway, the French are strange, they start arguments over a yes or a no, but now I understand why the baker looked at me strangely.”

-"The cultures aren't the same, you know that better than anyone."

-"Yeah, well, I wouldn't go to France to buy butter anymore, even if that region with its cows looks cool."

-"Normandie," the CEO said slowly.

-"Yeah, Normandy, how do you know all that? You're not even French."

-"I like France.”

-"Yeah, I wouldn't be so sure if I were you. I found out who puts salt in their butter after realizing they put cream in pizzas, cream, Lena! I'm sorry, but I'm not going back to France anymore." As Lena began to tire of explaining such trivial things to Supergirl, Kara's complaints began to make her laugh slightly. "Best cook," my eye, their food is treacherous, you think you're eating one thing and you're actually eating another." The blonde sighed miserably. "Sorry, Lee, but no more French breakfasts. Do you like Italy?"

-"Yes, Italy is good" the brunette replied with a smile.

-"Great!" she exclaimed happily, standing up to press her lips against Lena's. But just as she was about to step back, anticipating a quick kiss, the billionaire grabbed her by the collar of her cardigan to deepen the kiss. When the grip on her jacket loosened, Kara stepped back with a satisfied smile.

-"I have to go get ready," Lena told her, getting up and going to the bathroom.

The sound of the lock being turned, unfortunately, told her it wasn't an invitation to follow her.

Kara stood for a moment with a goofy smile, wondering why it took her so long to admit she had feelings for her best friend. They could have been living this kind of moment for so long. After a few minutes of daydreaming, she began to put away what was on the table. When she did, she noticed the butter, inspecting it for a few seconds before finally throwing it in the trash.

-"In my job, I can be betrayed by anyone, so I'd like to avoid being betrayed by my fridge.”

She turned around, rubbing her hands together, proud of herself. She grabbed the pain au chocolat she'd started to finish. "Anyway, I prefer to say 'Chocolatine,'" Kara said, looking at her loaf.

-"And I prefer to say pain au chocolat," Lena replied, stepping out in one of her usual work dresses, arms raised as for finished tying her hair into a perfect ponytail.

-"Why? Bread, that's it," she said, pointing to a half-eaten baguette she'd bought. "It's not bread, look at the difference." She held out the small piece left over from her breakfast and the baguette to demonstrate her point.

-"I won't debate this, Kara," she pushed aside the two items her girlfriend had handed her. "Let's get to work instead, okay? You could write a paper on these strange debates in France, okay?”

-"Excellent idea" with these words she stuffed the last piece of her chocolate croissant in her mouth grabbed her coat and left without a goodbye to Lena. Hoping to have more convincing answers from her colleagues and other friends from Catco and DEO.
