“I’ll be here for you,” she'd said, standing before him in his little room the night before the end of the world. The unseen weight of the awful sky had embossed what lay behind her words into his skin. He hadn't been strong enough to bear it. They held between them something beautiful, a sapling just uncurling its first leaves, but it was so new, barely rooted, and their hands were too small to shield it from the coming storm.
The sky is bloody, and this is not something anyone can solve with knives. He’d seen this. He’d known. He’d said, “Don’t make promises you might not keep.” The rising wind had moaned in his ears.
