Once upon a wedding

Summary:

Short story about Aurora's and Phillip's wedding.

Work Text:

A few months had passed since Aurora returned to her parents’ castle after spending sixteen years hidden away in the forest. The grand halls and sparkling chandeliers were still new to her, but slowly, she was beginning to feel at home.

Unlike other princesses, Aurora wasn’t pressured to be perfect. Her parents welcomed her true self — wildflower and dreamer — rather than a polished royal. Her adoptive aunts, the three good fairies, stood by her side, helping her adjust to palace life with kindness and gentle magic.

And always nearby was Phillip, her betrothed. Though their parents had arranged their engagement when they were children, Phillip never treated her like a duty or a title. Instead, he was a steady, cheerful presence, encouraging her to laugh, explore, and be herself. With him, Aurora felt truly special — not just a princess, but someone loved for who she was.

One bright morning, Phillip asked Aurora to join him for a walk in the forest — the very forest where their story had begun.

Though they had been betrothed since Aurora’s birth, Phillip believed he should ask her himself — properly, from the heart — in the forest that meant so much to them both.

Phillip took Aurora’s hand and led her deeper into the forest — the one where they had first met, danced, and fallen in love. The sunlight filtered gently through the trees, casting golden patterns on the mossy ground. Birds fluttered above them, and the squirrel who had once guided Phillip to her scurried excitedly along a branch.

Aurora twirled with joy as she reunited with her woodland friends — the owl, the rabbits, the songbirds — laughing as they gathered around her. She told them all about life in the castle, the grand halls, the late-night talks with her parents, and the kindness of the fairies who still fussed over her like proud aunts. Phillip watched her, smiling. Even surrounded by royalty and riches, she hadn’t lost her lightness or wonder.

Then, gently, he took her hand again.

“I want to show you something,” he said.

He brought her to the tall, old tree — the one where she had once sat and gazed toward the castle, dreaming of a life she never thought she'd truly have.

She looked up at its branches, then back at him. “I used to sit here for hours,” she whispered. “Wishing. Wondering.”

Phillip nodded. “And now you're living it.”

He knelt before her, pulling a small box from his coat. Inside, nestled in velvet, was a ring — delicate, gold, with a single amethyst stone that shimmered in the dappled light.

“Princess Aurora. Briar Rose. My sleeping beauty,” he said softly. “I know we were promised to each other long ago, at your christening… but I wanted to ask you myself.”

Aurora’s breath caught. “Phillip, are you—”

“Will you marry me,” he said, “and make me the happiest man alive?”

A laugh bubbled up from her lips, full of joy and disbelief. “Yes! Of course I will!”

He slipped the ring onto her finger as the animals burst into delighted chatter and song. Aurora pulled him to his feet, and they shared a kiss beneath the tree — a kiss that felt like the end of one dream and the beginning of another.

Moments later, as they danced once more beneath the canopy of leaves, Samson waited patiently nearby. Phillip helped her onto the horse, and they rode back to the castle, her arms wrapped tightly around him. When they arrived, he turned to the gathered court, his voice full of pride.

“She said yes!”

Cheers erupted from their parents, the fairies, and everyone who loved them.

Two months later, the castle gardens bloomed like a dream come true — a perfect stage for the wedding of Princess Aurora and Prince Phillip.

The three good fairies had worked tirelessly to create the decorations. Flora and Merryweather were still bickering, as usual, over the color scheme. Flora insisted on soft pink roses and ribbons, while Merryweather swore by sky blue petals and sparkling streamers. In the end, they reached a compromise — the grand pavilion was draped with both pink and blue fabrics that shimmered in the sunlight, while Fauna added lush green garlands and delicate ivy, weaving nature’s own beauty into the celebration.

Aurora stood in the bridal chamber, her heart fluttering with excitement. She wore a breathtaking white gown — simple, elegant, and pure. The fairies had agreed unanimously that white was the perfect color for a princess’s wedding dress. The fabric shimmered like morning dew, and the bodice was embroidered with tiny flowers that seemed almost alive.

King Stefan, proud and emotional, waited at the entrance of the aisle. His smile was warm as he extended his arm to his daughter, ready to walk her down toward her future.

The guests gathered in the garden included the royal family, the fairies, the woodland creatures who had become Aurora’s friends, and many noble lords and ladies. Birds sang softly as the gentle breeze carried the scent of fresh blossoms.

As the music began, Aurora stepped forward, her eyes finding Phillip’s across the aisle. His face lit up with joy, and all the worries and doubts melted away. Today was a day of love, hope, and new beginnings — a fairy tale in the making.

Aurora reached Phillip’s side, her hand slipping gently into his. The sun cast a warm glow over the garden as the royal priest stepped forward, his voice calm and steady.

“Do you, Prince Phillip, take Princess Aurora to be your lawfully wedded wife, to love and cherish, in joy and in sorrow, as long as you both shall live?”

Phillip smiled, his voice full of certainty. “I do.”

Turning to Aurora, the priest asked, “And do you, Princess Aurora, take Prince Phillip to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love and honor, now and forever?”

Aurora’s eyes sparkled with happiness. “I do.”

Phillip lifted Aurora’s hand, and with a tender smile, he slipped the amethyst ring onto her finger — the same one from their forest proposal.

The fairies clapped their hands in delight. Flora sent a burst of pink sparkles into the air, Merryweather sprinkled blue glitter like a gentle snowfall, and Fauna sent a shower of tiny green leaves fluttering down.

The couple shared their first kiss as husband and wife, the crowd erupting in cheers.

The feast that followed was nothing short of magical. Tables groaned under the weight of delicious dishes — roasted game, fresh fruits, sweet pastries glazed with honey, and delicate cakes adorned with edible flowers. The fairies ensured every detail was perfect, from the glowing lanterns hanging from the trees to the soft music played by the royal orchestra.

Aurora and Phillip danced together beneath the twinkling stars, surrounded by laughter and joy. The animals from the forest joined too — the owl perched nearby, the squirrels darted playfully, and birds sang melodies that filled the night air.

King Stefan gave a heartfelt toast, his voice thick with emotion. “To my daughter and son, may your days be filled with happiness, your hearts with love, and your lives with magic.”

The fairies exchanged knowing glances, pleased that despite their playful quarrels, everything had come together beautifully.

As the stars began to twinkle in the evening sky and the last notes of music faded into the night, Aurora and Phillip found a quiet moment away from the celebration. The garden, now softly lit by glowing lanterns and fairy lights, felt like a secret world made just for them.

Hand in hand, they walked toward the gleaming carriage waiting nearby — the one that would take them to their new home, the castle their fathers had built especially for them.

Phillip glanced at Aurora, his eyes full of wonder and promise. “Can you believe this day? It feels like a dream.”

Aurora smiled, her heart full. “It does. But it’s just the beginning.”

They paused, looking back at the castle where their families and friends still gathered, waving and cheering. The fairies hovered nearby, their faces glowing with happiness and a touch of mischief, as if they already knew the many adventures that awaited the newlyweds.

Phillip wrapped his arm gently around Aurora’s waist. “Our castle... our future.”

Aurora leaned into him, her eyes reflecting the golden hues of the setting sun. “And whatever comes next, we’ll face it together.”

With a tender kiss beneath the painted sky, they climbed into the carriage. As the horses trotted away, their silhouettes bathed in the warm glow of dusk, they rode off — hearts full of hope, dreams of joy, and the promise of a happily ever after.
