A wedding between two worlds

Summary:

Short story about Eric's proposal and Ariel and Eric's wedding.

Work Text:

A month had passed since Ursula’s defeat, and peace had slowly returned to Prince Eric’s kingdom. The sea was calm, the skies bright, and the castle halls were once again filled with music and laughter. Ariel had adjusted beautifully to life on land—curious as ever, she delighted in every new experience, from dancing to discovering forks were not meant for brushing hair.

Eric watched her thrive and knew the time had come. Though everyone already knew they were meant to be married—and they had spoken of it many times—he wanted to do things properly. He wanted to ask her, not just in words, but in the way she deserved. With a ring. With intention. With love.

That evening, as the sun dipped into the horizon, casting golden light across the water, Eric led Ariel to a small boat waiting by the dock.

“A boat ride?” she asked with a playful sparkle in her eyes.

He smiled. “To a place you might remember.”

He rowed them to the quiet lagoon where, not long ago, they had nearly shared their first kiss. Fireflies danced above the water, and the familiar melody of distant waves filled the air. Ariel gasped, her eyes lighting up with recognition.

“Oh, Eric… This place is so wonderful. I loved it then, but I love it even more now.”

She looked radiant in a soft blue dress, a ribbon in her hair catching the breeze. Eric took her hand and met her gaze, his voice steady but full of feeling.

“Ariel,” he began, “we’ve already talked about our future together. But tonight, I want to make it official—to do this the right way.”

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small velvet box. Inside nestled a sapphire ring, its deep blue perfectly matching her eyes.

Ariel gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. “Oh, Eric! Yes! Yes, of course—!”

He laughed, warm and breathless. “You won’t even let me ask the question properly!”

She giggled. “Oops. Okay, go ahead—I’ll be quiet this time.”

He took a breath and knelt in the boat. “Princess Ariel of the sea, you are the most extraordinary soul I’ve ever known. You saved my life—and not just once. You’ve changed my world. Will you marry me?”

“Yes,” she whispered, tears in her eyes. “With all my heart.”

As they kissed, Flounder splashed up from the water, Sebastian gave a triumphant “Ahem!” from a nearby rock, and Scuttle dive-bombed them with excited squawks. Laughter echoed through the lagoon.

Back at the castle, Grimsby, Carlotta, and the entire staff celebrated the news. Grimsby, who had long hoped Eric would find the right person, had been doubly delighted to discover Ariel was royalty herself.

Preparations for the wedding began at once. Ariel insisted on a wedding dress with the puffiest sleeves imaginable, while Eric requested a cake so grand it would take an entire galley to bake. They chose to marry aboard a grand ship anchored at sea, so both land and ocean guests could attend.

At last, two months later, the big day arrived.

The sky was clear, the sea shimmering as the sun crowned the horizon. Ariel stood at the bow of the ship, her veil dancing in the wind. From the water, King Triton and her sisters watched proudly, while land-dwellers stood beside Eric on the deck. When the officiant declared them husband and wife, Ariel and Eric shared a kiss full of hope, joy, and the promise of a life where two worlds could become one.

Cheers erupted from above and below the waves.

It was a new beginning. And it was only the start of their happily ever after.

The sun was dipping low, turning the sea to gold as the wedding ship slowly drifted away from the harbor, its sails full of wind and joy. The celebration was still echoing behind them—music, laughter, and well-wishes from both sea and shore—but now Ariel and Eric stood alone at the stern, hand in hand, watching the horizon stretch out endlessly before them.

Ariel leaned against Eric’s shoulder, her long red hair fluttering in the breeze. Her gown had been exchanged for a flowing white dress more suited for travel, the train tucked neatly to keep from catching in the wind. The last light of the day danced on the waves, casting everything in a soft, dreamlike glow.

“I never imagined the sky could be this beautiful from a ship,” Ariel whispered, her voice full of awe. “It’s like we’re floating into a painting.”

Eric smiled, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “The sea’s full of wonders—above and below. But this moment… this is the one I’ve always dreamed of. Just you and me.”

She looked up at him with that same open wonder that had first captivated him. “What happens now?” she asked softly.

Eric turned toward the ocean, his eyes thoughtful. “Now, we live. We explore. I want to show you everything—more than just this kingdom. There are so many lands beyond the sea, cities you’ve never seen, traditions and music and food you’d love. I want to take you to all of them.”

Her eyes widened, sparkling with excitement. “Really? We can do that?”

He nodded. “We’ll travel together. We’ll visit other kingdoms—maybe even dance at royal balls in Avalor, see the spice markets of Agrabah, or walk the snowy streets of the Northern lands. The world is bigger than either of us knew. And I want to discover it all… with you.”

Ariel smiled, her heart full. “And maybe… one day… show our children the world too?”

Eric’s eyes softened. “Yes,” he said, kissing her forehead. “One day.”

The sun finally kissed the water, and the first stars began to appear. The ship sailed on, lit by lanterns and love, toward a future unknown but full of promise.

Ariel looked back once at the land, then turned toward the sea with a smile. She wasn’t leaving a world behind. She was sailing into a new one—with Eric at her side.

Together, they sailed into the sunset—and the beginning of their forever.
