Work Text:

The car was silent as they drove. The radio had broken week ago and Namjoon had never bothered to fix it but Taehyung found he didn’t mind.

Taehyung treasured the silence. The city was so loud. It never stopped. It was never quiet there, never a still moment, always nonstop movement. Everyone was always hurrying and rushing around constantly, never taking a moment to appreciate the stillness.

Namjoon knew how to just be silent, Taehyung had always liked that. The bustling noise of the city and artificial lights fell away the farther they drove and the stars became brighter.

When Namjoon parked the car by an empty meadow and they got out, Taehyung’s breath caught in his throat as he took in the glory of thousands of star burning so bright in the inky black sky.

The long grass of the vast meadow swayed gently under an endless night. They were in the middle of nowhere, stranded in silence and an otherworldly stillness. Taehyung loved the fact that it felt they were the only thing that existed in the world, just them and the shining stars. This he thought wistfully, this is all I ever wanted.

Taehyung was so enchanted he didn’t even realise Namjoon had walked up beside him until the older boy slipped his hand into his and squeezed gently.

Namjoon’s hand was solid and warm and it felt to Taehyung like it was the only thing keeping him grounded. Like without Namjoon there, interlocking their fingers he would just float off into the cosmos.

Before he met Namjoon, Taehyung wouldn’t have minded drifting away in the cold, starry brilliance of space. But then he fell hard for a sweet boy with dimples and bleach blond hair and he realised how lonely space could be.

Now Taehyung was content gazing at the stars reflected in Namjoon’s eyes, his two feet planted solidly on the ground.

The silence stretched on but it was the comfortable silence that falls when nothing needs to be said.

After all, Taehyung doesn’t need to hear Namjoon say ‘I love you,’ the hand holding his, like it will never let go, is enough.
