Work Text:
Ena had a small room in one of the upper towers of her palace where she stored all her artworks and did all her paintings.
It was always quiet at night. Moonlight would drip in through one of the large windows. She’d light a candle, and start painting.
Alone, surrounded only by her canvases, accompanied only by the occasional howl of wind. Perhaps some would say it was a rather… grim setting. But it was fine for Ena.
She preferred it like this. Away from the people.
She was the elder princess of the Shinonome Kingdom, and the idea of being the future queen was a constant weight on her shoulders.
She wouldn’t have time to draw as a queen. In fact, she barely did as a princess.
And even if she did, no one would compliment her artworks.
Sure, she was seen as gorgeous by the entire kingdom. Sure, she did adore all the compliments. But after a while, they got… stale.
But truly, she wished she was seen as an artist instead. She’d gone to local galleries before, even met with the famous artists behind those artworks. She’d compliment their techniques, and talk about how much she admired them.
She only ever got odd looks, snickers and whispers behind her back.
”The future queen of our kingdom wants to be an artist? How pathetic.”
Ena grit her teeth as she picked up her paintbrush, staring at the blank canvas before her.
Her eyes narrowed. She pursed her lips and dipped the paintbrush into paint. And thus, she begun to paint.
An hour had passed before she heard the door creak open. Her heart dropped as she heard heavy footsteps approach her.
Her father.
“Childish,” he spat. “A princess shouldn’t be drawing, she should be inspiring others to do it for her.”
Ena's fists clenched. She bit her lip.
She was tired of being looked at like a glass doll. Tired of her worth being tied to her face, her posture, the curve of her smile.
She wanted to be seen. Not admired. Seen.
She did all she could to not lash out. She set the paintbrush down.
“You’re right, father.” She stood. Her chair scrapped across the floor. She didn’t turn to face him. “I’ll be off back to my chambers then. Getting sleep. The future of the kingdom’s on me, isn’t it?”
She didn’t meet his gaze as she stepped past him, walking down winding hallways back to her room.
She had made her decision.

Ena pulled a book from one of the upper shelves of the bookshelf. She opened the book she'd be given some years back. She was just a young child wandering the kingdom. She had wandered a bit too far, and ended up in a sketchy store.
The owner had smiled at her, her yellowed teeth showing. Almost as if she knew something Ena didn’t.
The owner handed Ena a weathered book, telling her she might need it in the future. Ena kept it.
Ena flipped a few pages and eventually landed on a page she’d look over time and time again. Her trembling fingers traced the inked circle printed inside.
Maybe there were consequences to trusting a weird random old lady, but hey, what’s the worst that could be happen?

Wish-granting vampires sure were needy.
Ena sighed as she lifted the dagger to her finger, right above the centre of the pentagram she had drawn. She had snuck around her palace to look for the items needed for this ritual that was beginning to look more like a valentines’ day gift.
Seriously, what vampire needed chocolates? And ribbons? And carnations? And… fucking yuri manga?
Whatever. Maybe the vampires were raging lesbians. Ena couldn’t blame them. She’d be a lesbian too if there was a woman as hot as she was.
Ena took a deep breath, attempting to calm herself. She closed her eyes, and sunk the dagger into her finger, praying the blood would drip as she hoped.
A few seconds passed. The floor shuddered.
Ena opened her eyes as shadows danced across the walls. Certainly not hers.
They twisted around her, and eventually from them emerged the two vampires she had summoned.
One, with long flowing hair and a quiet gaze. The other, her short hair a light pink, had a large grin on her face.
From today onwards, Ena was definitely a lesbian.
“You called?” the short-haired one said, voice playful, teeth glinting.
Ena blinked, snapping back to reality. “I want out,” Ena said. “I want to be free from being the heir of the throne. I want to be a recognised artist.”
The two vampires gave each other glances before turning back to her. K and Amia, if the book was right.
“Are you willing to exchange your humanity?” The silver-haired one asked her. This one was K.
Ena blinked, and felt the blood drain from her face. Maybe trusting a sketchy old woman wasn’t a good idea after all.
She backed into a corner, her knees giving way. “You mean… I have to die?”
The pink-haired - Amia - chuckled. In a puff of pink smoke, she reappeared, crouched in front of Ena. She reached over to ruffle Ena’s hair, offering her a smirk. “Oh no, sweet thing. Nothing so boring, please. We want to make you one of us.”
Ena's heartbeat thundered in her ears. Her lips parted, about to agree.
“But,” Amia interrupted her before she could speak, holding up a finger to Ena’s lips. “You’ll also have to lose your hair.”
There was a long silence. Ena tilted her head.
“...you’re gonna… make me bald?”
Amia gave her an unimpressed frown. “Did you not do your research? Obviously no! You’re just gonna get short hair.”
Ena blinked at her. It was almost too good to be true.
She glanced at K, who had picked up the manga she got for the ritual and was flipping through it.
Huh. How weird.
“So, what’s it gonna be, huh?” Mizuki asked, leaning closer to Ena.
Ena blushed. Yeah, definitely a lesbian.
“I-I… y-yeah, w-whatever,” she spluttered.
Amia giggled, before placing her hands on Ena’s shoulders. In another puff of pink smoke, they were in front of the mirror in the corner of Ena’s room. Ena coughed.
Amia rummaged through the drawers before pulling out a pair of scissors. She gave them a quick twirl and it turned into a pair of professional hair-cutting scissors.
Mizuki summoned a chair, pushing Ena down it. Her heart was pounding. Because Amia was hot, not because she was scared.
Amia hummed as she worked her magic, snipping off locks and locks of Ena’s hair.
“Hm… let’s see,” Amia murmured to herself after a while, stepping around the chair to be in front of Ena. She grabbed Ena’s face, lifting it up.
“Blushing, are you? How cute.” Amia giggled as she quickly cut off a bit more of Ena’s hair. “I think you’re pretty cute too.”
For once, Ena actually really liked that compliment.
“Done~!” Amia chirped, stepping back. Ena stared at herself in the mirror.
Huh. She actually really liked this version of her. “Thank you, Amia.”
Amia laughed. “Mizuki’s my real name~ usually I don’t go by my real one, but seeing as you’re about to be converted, might as well, eh?”
With a flick of her wrist, the hair Amia - no, Mizuki? - had cut off floated upwards. With a snap, and yet another puff of pink smoke, a long-haired Mizuki grinned back at Ena.
Huh. That was nice.
“Kanade~! Your turn!” Mizuki skipped over to where K - Kanade? - was still seated, fixated on her manga.
“Alright, alright,” Kanade mumbled, picking up one of the carnations from the floor and using it as a bookmark.
She walked her way to Ena, staring down at her.
Ena was actually kind of scared this time. She didn’t know what to expect.
“Don’t worry, it won’t hurt.”
Kanade bent down until her mouth was next to Ena’s neck. She bit down.
Ena bit down on her own lip, shutting her eyes.
Fuck, it kinda hurt.
It was like she could feel the venom inject itself into her.
Fuck, it really hurt.

Ena woke up on a bed. Not the fancy kind with canopies. Just… a normal bed.
Her head fucking hurt.
She pushed herself into a sitting position against the headboard, resting her head against it. Groggily, she rubbed her eyes, blinking and taking in the scene through half-lidded eyes.
“Wakey wakey~ how’re you feeling?” Someone ducked into view.
Ena blinked a few times, turning her head towards that voice. Mizuki smiled back at her.
And then, reality hit her. Hard.
She soul her… humanity, whatever that meant, to two demons she summoned with the help of some book from an old lady.
Honestly, it didn’t seem that bad.
“G’night,” Ena mumbled, shifting back to lie down on the bed, pulling the blankets over herself.
She felt the bed dip under the weight of someone the same time she heard a chuckle. Then, she heard Kanade’s voice gently chiding her. “You know, you really should wake up. it’s nearly afternoon already. We made pancakes. If you wanna sleep after that, that’s fine.”
“Whaat?” Ena groaned, lazily gazing at Kanade
“Wait… did you say pancakes?!” Ena shot up straight, grabbing Kanade’s shoulders.
Kanade seemed taken aback, eyes widening. “Uh… yeah? Do you not like-”
“I fucking love pancakes.”
She heard Mizuki giggle.
“Shut the fuck up, Mizuki.”

And so, ten minutes later, Ena was heartily eating a plate of pancakes. Kanade and Mizuki sat in front of her, just watching her gobble down the stack of food.
“So… er, I know vampire transformation might be confusing, so we can answer your questions if you have any…?”
Mizuki laughed, leaning back in her seats and crossing her arms. “Like Kanade said, you’re one of us. So if you have questions, don’t hesitate~”
Ena stared at the two. She nearly forgot that part. She blinked, and swallowed her food.
“You granted my wishes, right?”
“In a way, yes,” Kanade responded.
“In a way?” Ena put down her fork and knife. She didn’t get scammed, did she?
“Aha, well…” Mizuki propped her arm on the table, resting her head on it. “One, you’re free to do art now. And two, well, since you’re one of us… I guarantee you’ll be known soon.”
“So… what’s the deal with the hair? Couldn’t you just… magic it yourself?” Ena returned her focus to her plate of pancakes, cutting up a small piece.
Mizuki winked. “For fun.”
Ena frowned. “...How does this help me become a famous artist again?”
“It doesn’t,” Mizuki grinned. “But you’ll see, won’t you?”

In the months that followed, the world whispered of demons.
Shinonome Ena no longer had a crown. No title, and certainly no chains. But everyone from all across the land knew her name.
Or her alias, “Enanan”.
She’d carve sigils into the sky and paint towns with blood. Every soul the three of them captured was a swirl of colours she’d use to paint.
Some feared her. Some worshipped her. All of them saw her, and the creations she and her girlfriends brought.
And for once, that was enough.
