Hey Mari, how are you doing today?"
I was walking along the dirt path leading towards town. The branches of the trees were swaying in the wind, the clear blue sky speckled with clouds.
"Good afternoon Mr. Bowman." I adjusted my straw woven basket that hung from my arm. "I'm doing pretty good today, I just finished fertilizing my plants."
"You're hard at work as ususal make sure you take it easy now."
"Thank you Mr. Bowman, I will I promise."
"That's my girl." He said smiling. He cleared his throat before speaking. "Make sure you give Ms. Shora my regards."
I smiled. "I will."
The sun was out in the sky after days of dreary weather, small puddles littered my path. My dress swayed around my ankles with the gentle breeze, as I entered the town square. I heard the laughter of children as they ran around doing chores. I smelled the freshly baked pastries from the bakery.
I pushed open the door to Ms. Shora's fabric shop, the bell ringing as I entered.
"Oh well hello Mari, It is so good to see you," She walked around from the counter towards me. "You should visit more often, let me put on some tea for you. I was gifted a box of Earl Grey from Mr. Bowman." She said speaking quickly her voice light with excitement.
I smiled at the older woman. I remember when I had to look up to her, now that was in the past. I've always loved coming here to drink tea and listen to her talk about the latest gossip in town. Her sweet floral scent and her motherly smile always seemed to calm my anxious mind.
"I would appreciate that very much." I said setting down my basket on our little table that stood in the back corner of her shop."
I sat in my chair, reminiscing about when I was a kid. I would practically beg to be sent to run errands here. It was about the only time I got a break from working with my dad in the field, It was was a rare treat indeed.
It wasn't long before Ms. Shora came with the tray that held a tea pot, two cups and some biscuits.
"That was quick, if I didn't know any better I'd say you were expecting me." I said pouring her tea and then myself, steam rising from the contents.
"Always dear, always." She replied with a gentle smile.
A softer look graced her weary eyes. "How are you doing sweetheart? I know it cannot be easy in that big ole' house up there. You know I would not have any qualms about you coming to live with me, and don't let my snoring stop you either."
I gave a polite smile. "I really do appreciate the offer but I couldn't encroach on you like that." I said softly sipping my tea, the heat warming the tip of my nose.
Ms. Sherly shook her head in frustration. "You are stubborn as you are beautiful."
"Oh I almost forgot, I ran into Mr.Bowman on my way here." I said.
"Oh did you now?" She asked after sipping her tea.
"Mhmm, he said to give you his regards." I said trying not to smile.
Our conversation continued to flow effortlessly. Eventually a customer would come in and I'd jump up before she could even place her hands on her chair to stand.
Eventually the sun began to set.
I was looking around at the fabric she had laid out. I remember thinking of all the different kinds of pretty dresses that could be made with them. My hand felt the soft balls of yarn she had out. Then the smile from my face faded as I thought back to the day Ms. Shora made me my own dress.
The floorboards creaked as she made her way over to me. "Mari, have you decided which fabric you'd like to take ?" She asked.
"I don't know about take but I'll trade you for some fruits and vegetables."
"You do make it hard to resist." She said.
"I'll be by tomorrow, have a good night." I said walking through the entryway.
"Yes, please do dear and tell Mr. Bowman I said hello."
I chuckled quietly.
"Get home safely, Mari." She said giving me a deep embrace.
"I will, goodnight." I said waving to her.
I walked past the bakery that had closed for the night. I noticed warm lights from the windows. I imagined families sitting down for dinner as they talked to each other about their day.
I trekked up the path through the lush trees. I briefly stopped by Mr. Bowman's to pass on the message. He seemed pleased.
Not much longer I arrived home. It's large bronze letters at the entrance mocking me.
"Victor's village"
"There are no winners..." I mumbled to myself.
I sat in the tub, the water hot just as always. The faucet dripped periodically into the tub, the sound echoing in the bathroom. I submerged my body into the water, my thoughts wandered away from me no matter how hard I tried to keep them close.
"...the odds be in your favor.."
The sounds of high pitched screams in the distance.
The sound of blood and bile being vomitted onto the pale white snow.
The slick feel of blood coating skin, the tight grip of my hand on my weapon.
The tightness in my chest as I ran in the darkness for what seemed like forever, every step I took felt like I was sinking into the ground. Footsteps coming up from behind me catching up in no time.
The flashing lights as dozens of people took my picturese. The clamy hands that touched me as I walked though the crowds. The long flowy dress that was lined with sequins that dug into my skin, my dark hair curled softly framing my face.
" ...from the 10th district the victor of the 72nd Hunger games, Marigold Spina!"
I gasped, quickly sitting up in the bathtub. My heart was racing, my hands felt shaky, I felt nauseous. I stood up from the tub, the water cascading down my body. I held onto the side of the tub for support.
I got out of the tub catching a glance of my body in the mirror, that I could have swore I broke. The sight disgusted me more than anything.
That night as I laid in my bed. The covers completely ontop of me as if shielding and hiding me away; my legs tucked close to my body. I stared out of my window with only the moon to keep me company as I drifted off.

Chapter Text
I kneeled in the dirt digging a hole to plant my vegetables for this season. The repetition of gardening helped ease my thoughts.
Dig.
Plant.
Water.
Weed.
Harvest.
It was tedious and that was what I enjoyed. The sun was beaming straight down on me, it wasn't until I felt the sweat dripping from my forehead did I decide to take a break.
I went to well that sat under the shade, and dropped the wooden bucket in. I pulled the coarse rope to bring it back up. I grabbed the ladel and dipped it into the bucket, gulping the cool water.
Once I had my fill, I sat down my back leaning against the well wall. I had one leg straight resting on the grass while the other was bent close to my chest. I listened to the birds chirping and the sound of the leaves rustling around me.
"Mari, are you here? Mari..." A soft voice called out.
"I'm back here Daniel." I responded.
Footsteps quickly made there way to where I was.
"My mom told me to come check on you, and she told me to bring you these eggs. How are you doing today? He asked looking around, before setting a covered straw basket down.
"I'm doing fine, just taking a breather from gardening." I said gazing at my hardwork. It was the most beautiful sight to me. Rich green leaves, ripe fruits and vegetables waiting to be picked, flowers just waiting to bloom.
I looked towards the young boy. He looked worried, his face was tense.
"What's wrong with you?" I asked gently.
"I turned twelve this year."
He didn't say anything else but he didn't have to I knew what he meant.
I patted the grassy spot next to me. He hesitated before sitting down, his knees pulled up to his chest. His chin resting on his knees as he stared at the garden ahead.
We both listened to the sounds of nature around us.
"I won't lie to you and say you won't get picked." I looked at him briefly. "Although that would be highly unlikely. What I will tell you is to cherish the moments you have. Whether you get picked this year, next year or never. Cherish every moment you are alive. Remember that you are not alone in your fears that you will always have someone who loves you and is thinking of you even if it may not feel like it."
"Is that what you do?" He asked, peaking up at me through his dark eyelashes.
I stared up at the clouds. "It's what I'm trying to do." I replied honestly.
Who do you think you are? Cherish every moment?
Why should you get to cherish anything at all, after everything you've done, everything you've taken.
Wasn't the boy too smart for you to lie to. Why don't you tell him whole truth. That even if he's reaped, he'd be luckier if he died in the arena. There are no winners, no victors. You call this cherishing life, barely behaving as a hum-.
"ari...Mari- are you okay?" He asked his hand on my shoulder.
"Oh I zoned out on you, sorry about that."
"Are you sure your okay?" He asked hesitantly.
"I'll be fine don't worry about me, would you like to help me with my garden. I lifted my eyebrows up expectantly. "I'll give you some berries to take home with you when you're done." I said smiling as I got up.
"I'd love to he said his smile returning to his face." He ran ahead to the garden.
As he passed by her face turned to stone, and a tear slipped from her eye. She quickly wiped it as soon as she felt it sliding down her cheek. She fixed her smile and went ahead to join him.

"Hey, I can call you Mari right?"
A tall lean man with sun kissed skin approached me in the common room of the tribute center. I hadn't met him but I'd seem him around talking to the others.
"Finnick, right? Nice to meet you." I said extending my hand.
He looked at me as if he was sizing me up, before accepting my hand shake.
"Whose your money on?" He asked me before looking up at the list of tributes on the screen.
I shook my head. "I wouldn't know anything about that." My expression light.
He smirked at me. "If that's not your vice, I wonder what it could be."
I smiled at him. "Well when you figure it out make sure you tell me."
He took a step closer to me to where I could practically feel him on me.
He peered down at me before speaking. "How about I find out right now?" His eyes were looking deep into mine.
My heart begin to race at his intrusion of my personal space. I buried my gaze into the floor waiting for something to give.
"Well it was nice meeting you, until next time princess." He said winking at me.
"Princess?" I thought to myself.
I stood towards the outskirts of the gala. Crowds of people were feasting, drinking and dancing. My soft pink dress made from fine lace and delicate jewelry clashed with the debauchery going on infront of me.
I watched as upper class capital citizens leered at thinly dressed victors, fabric wrapped around their bodies in tasteless designs. Leaving the things most private just barely covered. It took everything I had to keep smiling, we all have a role to play. I unconsciously scratched at the mesh sleeve covering my arms.
I suddenly caught sight of a familiar face, even in the elaborate clothing they dressed him up in, Finnick was easily recognizable. He was surrounded by the capital ladies who were practically fighting for the chance to talk to him. He seemed to take it in stride and looked to enjoy the attention.
I was watching his display of charm when I felt a cautious hand on my shoulder blades that dragged its way to my lower back. In my mind I shivered and gagged, in reality I smiled to see a man I didn't recognize right away.
He stood before his eyes trained on me as if searching for something.
Plutarch Heavensbee, game maker.
I kept my refreshing smile plastered on my face.
"Good evening Mr. Heavensbee." I nodded my head.
He smiled back at me. "Are you enjoying the party, Marigold?" He took a sip out his glass of champagne.
"Yes, it is truly such a magnificent sight." I responded lightly. And I'm not lying, the high ceilings, the gold accents thoughtfully placed throughout. Towers of champagne to my left and on my right a cascade of fancy desserts.
"I'm glad you are enjoying it." He said. "I'd like you to meet someone." He guided me right toward Finnick Odair."
"Excuse me ladies, I need to borrow Mr. Odair for a moment." The women seemed peeved but they walked away begrudgingly. One woman took her time leaving, she caressed her hand against Finnick's shoulder before whispering something in his ear.
If I had blinked I would've missed the way Finnick's eye twitched slightly. He covered smoothly and gave her a charming wink as she sauntered away.
"Finnick, are you familiar with Marigold Spina?" Plutarch removes his hand from my back.
He seemed to recognize me right away. "Of course, how could I forget her. Hello, princess." He smiled at me his eyes as clear as ever.
"It's nice to see you again, Finnick." I respond politely.
"No need to be so formal, we're going to be see more of each other." Finnick said stepping closer.
I glanced to Plutarch and he seemed to be holding in a smile. "I'm going to let you two get reacquainted."
Finnick led me to the roof of the party.The sun had long since set, although the stars were beyond me. It was considerably more chilly, I unconsciously began to rub my arms. Finnick seemed to notice and placed his arm around me.
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. What could this man possibly want. It was all so weird. First, a gamemaker starts talking to me saying he wants to introduce to me another victor and now I'm on a rooftop. My mentor from my previous Hunger games taught me alot but the most important thing she taught me was...
"Don't ask questions."
"Why not?" I asked confused. She flicked my forehead.
"Ouch!" I said bringing my hand up. "Why did do that?" I asked.
This time she pinched the underside of my arm.
"Stupid girl." She muttered rolling her eyes at me.
"What's going on in that sweet head of yours." I looked up to see that Finnick was already watching me.
I considered displaying my actual questions but decided against the idea.
"Just taking in the sight." I said looking back to the towering skyscrapers.
"Mmm, forgive me if I don't believe you." I looked at him with confusion. His face was still smiling as if I didn't get the joke.
I let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine I'll bite, what am I doing here." I asked watching his expression carefully.
"We'll I'd hoped you were here to spend more time with me but it seems you were thing of something else." He smirked.
The more he taked the more confused I became.
"I'm joking." He said laughing to himself.
That night I was let in on the biggest secrets of my life.
Finnick walked me to the party before we separated he whispered some parting words in my ear before planting a light kiss on my cheek. My face instantly heated up.
He winked at me before walking away. As soon as he rejoined the party he was being surrounded again.

"I would like thank each of you for joining us this year for the reaping of the 74th Hunger games!"
I sat on stage with the mayor and his wife. The sun was glaring down on us with little shade to provide cover. I looked out into the crowed hundreds of boys and girls standing out here waiting to see if they were next.
I remember being in the same position.
It was hot. I stood closer towards the front of the crowd. Ms. Shora had made me a brand new dress for good luck. I felt the material between my fingers, it was smooth and soft unlike the rough and torn clothing I usually wore while taking care of livestock.
"Ladies first." The escort from the capital walked to the bowl and placed her hand inside. She seemed to enjoy this part because she was rifling through the cards as if there was one calling out to her. Finally, she picked one. She made her way back to the podium before slowly opening the card.
She cleared her throat.
"Marigold Spina." She looked out into crowd impatiently waiting for someone to walk forward.
I was shocked but at the same time it's like I expected it to happen. I began to walk out of my row slowly. I turned my head hoping to catch a glimpse of my parents. I knew this was going to be too much for them. I caught sight of my mom and she was barely keeping it together before my dad pulled her into his embrace.
My heart ached.
I had made it to the stage. I glanced at the mayor and his wife. They were good people who did their best when they could. I remember walking through town as a child, they would give me a piece of candy sometimes.
The expression on their face was tense to say the least.
I saw an unfamiliar woman next them. She must've been our last living victor, Maybelline.
She was a bit of a recluse.
I took my spot on stage. The escort came my way her smile widened with excitement. "Now, aren't you precious. I must say I love your name."
She looked at me expectantly. "Thank you." I murmured.
"You are quite welcome." She responded.
She continued on with the ceremony, but I wasn't there I was thinking of my family, my friends. I was thinking my favorite spot in mom's garden.
Before I knew it I was inside the justice building behind closed doors. A minute later my parents came bursting in, they held me in their arms. My mother was sobbing, I had never seen her cry more than a few tears before. My dad was practically shaking but his face remained dry. We stayed like that until it was almost time for me to go.
My dad held me by my shoulders and looked me in my eye. "You fight now, you hear me. I know what's in your heart but you come back to us, I don't care what it takes." His voice was steady but I swore I heard a crack.
I nodded my head."I'll do my best."
My mom looked at me next. I noticed the fine wrinkles underneath her eyes. Small streaks of gray were starting to appear in her hairline.
"I want you to remember that you will always be my baby no matter what, so come back home." Her voice was quivering by the end.
My attention was brought back to the present when I heard the escort tapping on the microphone.
Her smile was as wide as ever. "Ladies first."

I sat in the train with my two mentees.
Annona and Til, they were both sixteen. They sat next to eachother still taking in the scenery. The lavish passenger car had plenty of foods and drinks. Til was more closed off compared to Annona who had more of a doe eyed look.
"So what happens now." The boy asks looking at me.
"We when arrive to the capital you're going to get a total makeover and it will be invasive, I suggest you don't fight that it will just make it harder on you. Over the next few weeks you will paraded to the capital but you will also begin your training. I'll work with you independently on what your angle is going to be."
"What do you mean by angle?" The girl asks.
"Remember this is all just a show for them and you are just characters in a story and if you want to survive you'll need to be likeable ones. It's easy to get lost in the lights and glamour, but to the capital citizens you don't actually matter." I explained bluntly.
"But you don't need me to tell you that, I am going to do my absolute best to give you the tools you are going to need to survive but I can only do so much." I said giving a soft smile.
I looked out the window to see the shining capital.
Before we exited, I instructed them both to smile and wave to the crowd that was waiting outside the station. They seemed to listen well hopefully I would be able to get one of my tributes out alive this year although even that wasn't enough for me.
It wasn't long before we made it to the tribute center as I was separated from them. I gave them encouraging looks before they were whisked away. I was led to the 10th floor where we'd be residing.
I sat in the living room watching the broadcast attempting to get a feel for what the games might hold. After the extensive spa treatments my tributes went through we went over the other districts they'd be facing.
"You'll want to watch out for districts 1, 2 and 4. They have the advantage of training for years just to volunteer for the games. They usually form a pack of sorts so you don't want to be near them, avoid them at all cost. Your best bet is to survive whatever terrain they throw at you and hope the careers take each other out." We sat at the dinner table, I could tell Annona and Til were just happy being able to eat to hearts content. "That brings me to my next point avoid the cornucopia that's in the center, it'll have everything you might need but it's also where most of the tributes die."
"So we just run and hide for the whole game?" Til questioned not liking the idea.
"No, you survive. You focus on the things that are attainable with low risk.
I continued answering their questions into the night.
"That's enough talking about the games for now, tomorrow we will be practicing interviews. We'll talk about that in the morning." I said excusing myself from the table.
As I was walking away about to turn into the hall I turned back to the two of them. "Try to get enough sleep tonight."
I made my way to the rooftop to be alone. I sat on a cushy sofa that overlooked the city, I was surrounded by a canopy of lush greenery. Seeing some nature made me feel a tad bit at ease but unfortunately not enough.
My heart was aching with guilt. I don't know what I'm doing. I didn't win my game by my sheer determination, strength or smarts.
I just got lucky... I was in a corner and reacted.
I can still feel my hand clenching onto my weapon, my grip was so tight it almost hurt. I was attempting to slow down my breathing, watching as my breath fog around me in the cold air.
I looked all around me waiting for someone to jump out. I was exhausted, starving and practically freezing to sum it up not in the best mental state.
Suddenly some jumped out from the trees and tackled me. My knife was knocked from my hand. My assailant landed partially ontop of me. I didn't have the capacity to try and identify who it was before I was kicking them off me. I scrambled for me knife just as they were about to lunge for me I swiped my knife across, slitting their throat.
A sick gurgling sound echoes though the silent forest. Blooding was pouring out of her throat onto the trampled snow. With the last of her energy she wrapped her hand around her neck, but it was futile. She laid there in her blood, her eyes wide with anguish as she lazily trailed her eyes to mine.
I felt the tears stream down my face but I didn't feel the rush to wipe them away. How long has it been since I felt so overwhelmed that it brought me to tears?
I was so distracted I didn't notice the footsteps heading towards me until it was too late.
I snapped my head to the side to see Finnick looking at me. He looked different, he wasn't wearing his famous smirk he wasn't even smiling at all. His expression was blank and his once clear eyes were cloudy. I tried to wipe the tears away without being too obvious, but it was clear what I was doing.
He wordlessly walked towards the couch and sat next to me. He was so close, I could feel his warmth, I could smell the cologne he was wearing. But through the cologne I smelt salt and if it had a scent the sun.
He pressed my head into his chest. I listen to his steady heart beat, I brought my legs up under me. Finnick ran his hand over my arm comforting me. We sat out there for hours, listening the busy city below.
"Thank you." I said.
"Don't let them get you down." He replied.
"I don't want to be the reason that they die." I said my voice barely a whisper.
I felt Finnick's body tense.
"If they die, it won't be your fault at all. Don't blame yourself for things outside of your control."
He grabbed my hand and and squeezed it.
I peered up at him though my eyelashes. "Thank you Finnick, I mean it."
"Of course, sweetheart."
Chapter 6
Summary:
The 74th Hunger games has officially begun and a sneak peek at Marigold's games.

The sun was just beginning to rise when I sat at the kitchen table sipping a warm cup of coffee. The past few nights, I did not get much sleep at all, but I'm glad I stayed up as long as I did. I realized I was smiling as I thought about Finnick. Someone like him it was hard to know the real him. Having to spend years pretending to be someone you're not, it would most people crazy. It's hard for others to know what's genuine but I'm certain that's what Finnick is really like empathetic and caring.
I spent that morning and afternoon working one on one with my tributes. I learned there strengths, weaknesses, their ideals, passions all of it. That night during the interviews they did pretty well. I knew it was harder for Til, his personality is a bit more harsh and less agreeable but he was able to use that for his own good. Annona did great for hers she has more of the aesthetics that capital citizens usually go for.
It wasn't long before the day there scores were announced, the day before the hunger games. They did okay especially for our district. Til got a score of 6 and Annona got a 5. What really suprised me was that Katniss Everdeen got a score of 11. What could she have done to get that?
I spent that night going into as much detail as I could about what they might expect. I didn't want to say too much and end up giving the wrong information.
"The two most important parts is to survive, and also this suppose to be a show they want it to be interesting use that to your advantage."
"Don't worry Marigold, we can handle this." Til said.
I shook my head. "It's your over confidence that's worrying me."
Annona shifted around quietly. "We'll do our best."
I gave her a soft smile, before I gave them both hugs.
It was finally the day of.
I gave my tributes hugs and wished them good luck. I would be working hard to secure sponsors for them. It probably wouldn't be much but it was better than nothing.
I listen as the number counts down from sixty. It feels so much longer than it should, I'm attempting to pull myself out of my head and get a good look of my surroundings.
55.....54....53...
All I see around me is snow and trees. Up ahead past the cornucopia there seems to be a lake. It's not currently snowing but I'm sure that can change. The skin tight suit I'm wearing keeps me covered and warm enough, if I'm going to survive I'll need more layers. On all other side we were surrounded by tall trees thick with leaves. The sky is shades of gray and white.
40...39....38...37...
I'm looking around at the other tributes that are scattered around the center. Some are ready to charge foward while others continue to look around in confusion.
I catch sight of my district partner, Sylvan. He's looking around aswell until he catches sight of me.
10....9...8....7....6...5...4....3....2...1.
I jump of the platform and taking off running for forest. I'm able to grab a small backpack as I hear the sound of fighting going on behind me but I don't stop, I don't even look behind me. The snow is slowing me down each step I feel myself sink into it but I keep pushing even as my thighs begin to burn. I finally make it to the tree line, I'll have to find some sort of a cover soon. I don't slow down I feel my chest burn as I push through. I try to tune out the sounds of my ragged breathing and my choppy footsteps and listen in for anyone following me, to my delight I conclude I'm alone. For now.

Aftermath of the games

"Now please tell us how does it feel to be the only Hunger games champion with two victors?" Caesar flicker man sat in his chair. He was sitting back with his legs crossed. On his left sat both Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Melark.
"We're just so just happy we made it out together." Peeta replied. His hand resting in hers. She smiled at him her eyes soft as if they were the only two in the room.
"I know that's right but please remember you do have an audience right now so please keep it PG." Caesar joked giving the audience a look which made them laugh.
The lovely couple chuckled. "We'll try." Katniss replied. The interview went for some time before the two ended it with a sensual kiss. The audience cheered and clapped at the affection.
That night I sat on the same couch that overlooked the city, the cool breezing kissing my skin. I sat in silence this time, there were no more tears to cry. I tell myself that I did my best but it just wasn't enough. Soon after all the celebrations, I will be able to go home and fall back into my routine.
And do it again next year.
I was in such a daze I didn't notice I had company until I felt someone plop onto the couch right next to me. I was relieved to see it was Finnick. I was able to muster up a smile as I gazed at him.
My head some how found it's way to his shoulder. We sat out there in silence the sounds of the city below keeping us company.
"I remember after I won my games I was so proud. I had done something so great at such a young age I thought I would be bringing honor back to my district." His eyes crinkled with revulsion. "Little did I know what was is store for me for me." I grasped for his hand holding on tight.
"I remember the first night clearer than any other, it was the night my view of the world shattered. I remember how repulsive her hands felt on me, how strong her perfume was. When I woke up the next morning, a terrifying thought had crossed my mind."
"What I'm trying to say is tha-"
"It was better this way" I interrupted. He gave me a bitter smile.
He let out a sad chuckle. "You understand."
"After I had won my games I barely remember the parties, just how loud the music and the people were and how bright the lights seemed. They poured me so many drinks, I wanted to say no but my mentor shot me a look. I kept asking myself why can't I say no, why not?" My voice quivered.
"I remember people being too touchy too hands on. One night after having God knows how many drinks, they led me to a room, it was at the end of a hallway. I remember being on a bed... I realized what was happening. I started screaming a-and fighting. I ran out the room..." I paused the memory of that night threatening to take over.
"My mentor was trying to warn me of something but I didn't understand what she meant until it was too late. When I made it back home, I was just in time to bury my parents."
That was when the tears started. I felt them drain from eyes. These tears were silent, I didn't have anymore energy to cry out and yell. Finnick pulled me closer to him if it were even possible. We sat out there together basking in the dim moonlight.
"She sparked a flame out there, I saw it. You probably haven't heard but during the games after Rue died district 11 started a riot. There will only be more, are you ready for things to change."
I sat up to look him in his eyes. They were bright and clear as ever. His face was serious but optimistic.
"I'm ready."
I wasn't expecting it but Finnick placed a gentle kiss onto my cheek. I was shocked to say the least, over the years since I first met him he had slowly but surely began digging his way into my heart. His comforting words, his beautiful smile, the confidence his eyes radiated.
I began to kiss him back. Even with us both sitting he was much taller than me leaving my head at an odd angle. He noticed and brought his hand up under me to bring me onto his lap. We separated for a moment, staring into each others eyes. My face was flushed as I fought to catch my breath.
"Is that all it took for you to loose you breath." He smirked.
"Yes that's all it took." I say laying my legs across his with my ear at his heart.
"It sounds like I'm not the only one." I say with a cheeky smile.
I was waiting for the train to finally stop. As soon as the doors opened I was met with a couple of familiar faces Ms. Shora and Mr. Bowman. They looked so happy to see me but there was something hidden in their expression. I didn't question it until I jumped into their arms and they held on tightly, so tight I thought I might pass out.
I felt something wet drip on my skin. When I looked up to see Ms. Shora weeping.
"I'm so sorry my child."
"What wrong? I'm back now everything's okay."
She shook her head. I looked to Mr.Bowman but he couldn't look me in the eye.
"Your mom and dad got sick all of sudden...they didn't make it." He said.
The floor dropped from under me. This had to be a nightmare, that couldn't be true. This was one big cruel joke and any minute now someone would start laughing.
As I looked between their expressions I realized they were serious.
I realized that I had fought for no reason.

It was the victory tour for the 74th Hunger games. Peeta and Katniss had arrived to District 10. They faced a crowd of hundreds of men, women and children peering at them under the shining sun. On stage sat the mayor, his wife.
And District 10's last living victor, Marigold Spina.
They stood on stage reading off their pre-written speech. They talked of why the hunger games matter and how filled with pride they were to be able to represent their district.
Some suspected it was all a lie.
Few held onto the words like it was a lifeline.
Marigold knew the truth.
After their speech was over the people on stage were guided inside. The couple offered their thanks to the mayor and shook hands.
I stepped up my hand already out grasping onto Katniss who was visibly shocked.
"You both did great out there, I know how hard it can be speaking infront of large crowds like that."
"Thank you for your consideration, it means a lot to us." Peeta remarked his eyes gazing towards Katniss who was confused on why this young woman was holding onto her.
"Of course it's no trouble at all, us victors need to look out for eachother." I said studying Katniss's expression.
"It's time to leave." A peacekeeper with a gruff voice interrupted our conversation.
"Stay safe you two." I said a sympathetic smile graced my face.
" You too..." Katniss spoke, like she wasn't expecting herself to speak at all.
I nodded to the both of them as they were escorted out of the building. As I watched them retreating I thought back to the dark spots underneath Katniss's eyes, how utterly exhausted she looked.
I stood on stage reading off the note cards made for me by my escort, a smile plastered on my face. I looked out at the huge crowd of people leering me. For the most part they seemed apathetic at my presence. It makes sense with District 4 being a career district they wouldn't take too kindly for a winner being from a poor district like mine. I addressed the families of the dead tributes and expressed my sympathies. That part wasn't a lie.
In the games it's so easy to see everyone as an enemy especially the careers, the fact that they seem to take pleasure in killing sickened me to my core. It wasn't until I saw a capital child cheering me on during my parade did it hit me. The absolute joy that was on her face just completely threw me off. Which didn't make sense I was in the middle of a parade with hundreds of cheering capital fans. Why did this one child laughing and smiling at my victory shake me?
Once I finished my speech I was escorted inside. The building was white from floor to ceiling, paintings adorned the walls. I sat on a bench staring up at the bright ceilings when I heard footsteps.
I looked in that direction to see a group of people talking amongst themselves. One in particular was a tall man, he couldn't have been too much older than me, and he was very attractive to say the least. However, he didn't seem to be in the best of moods, he was smiling but the way he clenched his jaw made me doubt the sincerity.
My escort came up to me and spoke in her usual high-pitched voice. "It's time to go missy."
I nodded silently before getting up. As we were walking past the group I noticed the same man from before staring at me. Time seemed to slow down as we exchanged looks, his expression was almost sorrowful.
Once we were out of earshot my escort spoke up. "That was Finnick Odair, you know."
"Hmmm..." I hummed acknowledging her.
"Oh you know he won his game when he was 14 years old!" She spoke with excitement and awe.
"Oh." I responded, my mind was filling with possible responses but none of them sounded right to say outloud.
"Just oh, is that all you have..." My escort continued to speak but I was blocking her out at this point. I was thinking back to his eyes. They were such a clear green but they were filled with pity.
Chapter Text
The sun was high in the sky, there were no clouds to block its light. I was in my garden. I sat on my knees carefully snipping away off the dead parts of my plants. Next, I was digging holes to plant some new seeds. I went to my chicken coop and started picking eggs. I let my few chickens roam out in there covered pen. After, I got my rake and began cleaning out the coop,
back and forth,
back and forth,
back and forth.
I added fresh straw and hay to the floor. I collected the excrement and started the process of making more fertilizer, before letting the chickens back inside.
It wasn't until I felt my hands aching did I realize that the sun had begun to set. I felt the dull aches of my body. My mouth felt dry and my stomach felt empty. I had skipped dinner last night I couldn't even think about eating knowing what was to come. I had coffee for breakfast to settle my stomach... did I eat lunch today?
I got water from the well and guzzled it down. I could feel it dripping down my chin. I poured water ontop of my head cooling my body down somewhat. I sat down on the cool ground feeling my body begin to relax. Suddenly, it was impossible to keep my eyes open.
I stared up into the bright blue sky, my eyes getting heavier.
It was sometime until I realized I had dozed off. I was woken up by hushed whispers around me.
"...this can't go on...."
"....it's about tim....."
I felt myself being picked up my mind too fatigued to care.
When I finally woke I was in my bed. My body felt cool and clean. How did I get here? I don't remember going to bed myself. I looked to my left to see Ms.Shora sitting in a chair next to me. Her eyes were red and puffy.
I quickly sat up suddenly feeling dizzy, knocking off the damp towel that was on my forehead. "What's wrong?!"
"Oh dear..." She said trying not to cry again.
"You got heatstroke working in that heat, Mr.Bowman carried you in."
"Oh, I'm sorry." I apologized reaching for her hand.
She looked at me. "What are you sorry for." She asked.
I squinched my eye slightly. "For making you guys worry and take care of me."
"Now it is no skin off my nose to take care of you actually I would jump for joy if you'd let me." She said with a smile. "I know horrible things happened to you in that place and you did everything you could to come back home. Let us help you where we can, I know we can't do much but lean on us please." She begged her head slightly tilted.
Tears silently streamed from my eyes as I listen to her words. I wrapped my arms around her as she rubbed my back.
After calming ourselves down we went downstairs. I had saw that Mr. Bowman had made cut up a bunch of fruit for us to eat together.
"You need to make sure you hydrate." He scolded me.
We sat there that night in peace at my kitchen table eating fruit that tasted sweeter than usual. A peace which I knew couldn't last.

I stood facing the crowd, it felt like I never really left the stage. I wasn't listening to any of the voices not really, I just looked out into the crowd the tired faces of everyone. I saw Ms. Shora and Mr.Bowman standing together, I gave the smallest of smiles. Their faces were stern and defiant.
"As district 10's sole victor, you alone will be representing your district, Marigold Spina...may the odds be in your favor."
I didn't respond I just watched the sea of people as they stretched out three of their fingers in a salute outwards to me.
I was dragged away before I could reciprocate.
The train ride, my arrival to the capital all blurred together. Between being paraded around the capital and being fitted for ny interviews It wasn't long before I was listening to the other tributes on stage. As they pleaded in their own way for the games to be called off. Trying to appeal to the emotions of the crowd.
"Now tell me Marigold how does it feel to be back on stage in front of your adoring audience?"
I looked out into the audience to see joyful faces. The flashing lights blinding me but I showed no reaction. I looked out to the crowd of people who genuinely thought they loved me.
I pity them.
I gave my attention back to Caesar flickerman, I tilted my head ever so slightly, I heard a few of the audience members oohhh and awww over this gesture. During my games I had the advantage of being shorter than the other tributes, my round face helped as well making me seem endearing or precious as I've heard others say. I guess fortunately for me I didn't grow much bigger.
"Can I be honest with you?" I asked my head slightly tilted forward my eyes looking through my lashes like a puppy that just got kicked.
"Of course sweetheart, please speak." Caesar respond playing along.
"You all have changed my life. I don't know where I'd be without any of you, to think I might be taken away from all of you... I can't imagine it. I know that all the other tributes feel the same way." I looked out into the crowd to see a few teary faces.
I doubt these interviews would actually get the games canceled, but I have to try.
"Oh my you are breaking our hearts Marigold! My amazing audience what do you think?"
They cheered, and many were standing as they clapped.
I gave the audience a tearful goodbye before exiting the stage and going up the staircase. I listened to the rest of the tributes give their interviews and it was interesting to say the least. Watching Katniss twirl around in her dress as it burned away into another dress that resembled a mocking jay. The crowd loved it they were giving her a standing ovation.
Peeta walked on stage with his charismatic smile. The crowd cheered his appearance, he shook hands with Caesar. The conversation was pretty normal at first until Peeta got a far off look in his eyes.
"If.... if it hadn't been.... for the baby." He muttered, his face dejected.
The crowd was completely shocked. The host for once was at a loss for words. By this point the crowd was booing and shouting for the games to be canceled. I looked at Katniss and she seemed to be surprised. Did she not plan on anyone finding out or is it... As I glance at Katniss again and I get the sense of some sort of ruse.
Caesar whispered something in Peeta's ear and the next moment he walking up the stairs to join Katniss.
Once Peeta joined the other tributes he held Katniss hands. She looked to one of districts 11's tributes, Chaff and she held his wrist, as his hand was no longer attached. This started a chain reaction where all the tributes held hands and raised it above their head for all to see. The crowd was still fuming with rage and energy, when the lights were cut sending us into darkness.
I stood in the elevator lost in thought. Before I could press my floor number Katniss, Haymitch and Peeta entered. Katniss's expression was tense to say the least, it took her a moment but as she was looking at me her eyes widened with recognition. I smiled at her, giving her a nod. She stood next to me while the others stood off to the side infront of us. Once I turned my attention back to the numbers, I could no longer reach them.
I was about to speak up when.
"That's a good color on you." Katniss said her face looked neutral.
I smiled. "Thank you. I liked your dress onstage too."
She seemed taken aback. "It's not really my style, too frilly." She replied.
I lean a bit closer. "I meant the 2nd dress." I said barely a whisper.
She gave me a soft smile. She was about to say something when the elevator doors opened again.
This time it was Johanna. I hadn't really spoken to her that often, she seems prickly to say the least, but there is something else I can't put my finger on. As soon as she stepped on it began to move, what was weird is that she was facing us.
She was trash talking her stylist as she began taking off her accessories. She turned her back towards Peeta asking him to unzip her dress.
I looked at Haymitch he seemed to be enjoying the situation, he could barely keep a smirk off his face. I looked at Katniss and could read her face like a book.
Is this chick serious?! Is what I imagine.
Katniss was also staring at Peeta because he actually unzipped her dress.
She turned back around to face us as she continued to undress until her clothing was on the floor. At this point I was looking at the intricate gold emblishments on the wall. As she continued to just stare at us.
Finally the elevator stopped and she walked out.
"Thanks let's do it again sometime." She said her bare backside facing us.
"No, thank you." Haymith replied. "Johanna Mason, district 7." As if she needed an introduction.
I said my goodbyes to Katniss and the others as I arrived to my floor.
"You know I think gold would really set your look off."
I gave him a confused look before glancing at Katniss and Peeta they gave equally bewildered expressions.
"Thank you..." I said unsure. As I exited the elevator.
"Have you been drinking?" I heard Katniss ask.
"What do you think?" He asked incredulously.
After scrubbing off the glitter and make up on my body. I got dressed in my silky pajamas that felt like butter on my skin compared to my dress before. I sat on my bed changing the scenery of my room. I noticed something on my nightstand.
It was a gold ring, the shape of it reminded me of a crown, underneath it a note.
"Every princess needs a crown"

The 75th games have begun.
Chapter Text
I stood on the platform shocked to see I was surrounded by water. I had never seen so much before. I looked around to see that on the perimeter of the arena we were surrounded by beaches and dense jungles.
45....44...43...42....41...
On either side of me there were rocky strips of land that led to the cornucopia or to the beach. I needed to swim to get to the strip and unfortunately that would not be easy. Back home we mostly had ponds that were only about thigh deep, I remember playing in those waters during the hot summers.
23...22...21...20...19....
I noticed Katniss not too far from me. Something was wrong, she seemed to be hyperventilating. The way she was turning her head to look around was erratic. I focused back onto the cornucopia. Hopefully, I would be able to get some knives or something to swing.
5...4...3...2...1....
The cannon went off. I hesitated on my platform, I stared at the chilly waves as it nipped at my feet before taking a deep breath and jumping in.
I began to sink pretty quickly. I could feel the burn as the salty water enter my nose and eyes, it was distressing to say the least. I kicked my legs and arms fighting to get to the surface. My head was able to breech the surface, I gasped for air taking some water down with it.
I kept kicking my legs trying to keep my head to stay above water. I finally felt the jagged land. I grab on with all my might, taking a moment to cough out the water. I climbed up the rocky surface stratching my legs along the way. Once I pulled myself up I checked my surroundings to see no one heading towards me.
I ran toward the cornucopia, it seems I wasn't the only having difficulty making it through the water. Plenty of tributes were still racing to the center. As soon as I was close enough I searched for a weapon I could halfway wield. I was about to grab a machete when I locked eyes with Cashmere. Her obviously being the more skilled fighter didn't even hesitate when launching her blade at my face.
I was able to drop to the ground my knees hitting the rough terrain. I let out grunt before noticing the knife was in reach.
I glanced back at Cashmere to see Finnick holding her off.
"Go to Katniss!" He yelled. I scrambled to get the knife and machete. I passed Finnick quickly eyeing Katniss who was on the long strip of land staring at the water like she was in a trance. I tucked the knife away holding onto the bigger blade.
I ran up to her, slowing down before I was too close. She sensed my presence and quickly had her bow out and aimed at me.
I raised both my hands up, the blade pointed down. The sunlight reflected off my gold ring.
"We're allies." I said cautiously.
She seemed to think about it before lowering her bow. At the moment the cannon sounded, Katniss snapped back to the water her expression was anxious and haunted her eyes were wide.
Until Peeta surfaced.
She let out a breath, before helping him up.
I sat on my usual spot on the roof of the tribute center. It was especially windy tonight as I rubbed my arms. I was about to go get a jacket when I heard a familiar voice.
"It seems you always forget to bring a jacket or do you just prefer my warmth." He teased.
I stood up and held Finnick in a hug. My arms wrapped over his waist as I buried my face into his abdomen.
"I missed you." I said my words muffled by his body.
He rubbed my back." I miss you too, princess." He muttered carefully.
We both sat on the couch cuddling into each other silently, but no words were needed.
"This is it."He whispered.
I nodded my head.
"We're going to form an alliance, to keep her safe. But I want you with me at all times, don't leave my sight."
"I won't."
"Make sure you wear the ring got you." He muttered.
"So that was you." I said with a smile.
"Who else could it be?" He asked raising one of his eyebrows.
"Oh I don't know..."
"Your trying to say that there is someone else you thought of that could have gotten it for you." This time his full attention was on me.
I smiled more hearing his tone turn slightly jealous. "You know what they say about assuming it makes an as-"
I was interrupted by Finnick as he started to tickle my stomach making me gasp and giggle. His fingers worked their way to my armpits. By this point I was laughing loudly and kicking my legs. Until my back hit the couch and Finnick was leaning over me.
He was staring deep into my dark eyes. Until I felt him kiss my cheeks. Then my forehead and my nose. Finally, my lips.
He smiled as I began to kiss him back.
We separated, he laid down next to me, wrapping his strong arms around me. I nuzzled my head into his chest breathing in his warm scent.
I felt so safe and comforted by his warmth that I felt myself drift off to sleep but not before hearing him whisper something sweetly against my temple.
"You have to stay with me..."
My body was stiff and heavy, my skin felt coated in sweat from the humid heat. My suit did its best to fight of the heat but it wasn't good enough for me. I tossed and turned on the moist ground, hoping sleep would claim me. I was on the verge of dozing off when something stung the back of my neck. With my eyes still closed I slapped my neck killing whatever pest that disturbed me.
"The fog! It's poison!!!" Katniss shrieked in pain. I jumped up to see an ominous fog roll in. Finnick quickly grabbed Mags and put her on his back, we all took off running throught the trees. The fog seemingly coming from multiple angles.
I felt the burn of the fog graze my arms. I swore I could hear the sizzle from my skin, I continued facing foward refusing to take a look at my injuries.
Suddenly Peeta collapsed in pain, the skin from his legs being eaten away.
"Mari..."
I snapped my neck to see whose voice that was but in the darkness of the jungle there was no one but us.
"Mari!!! I need help I can't carry him on my own." Katniss was fighting back tears as Peeta lied helpless on the ground in pain. I jumped to Katniss, we each put Peeta's arms around our shoulders. We were practically dragging him. Finnick was right behind us doing everything he could to keep up. I could hear the groans of pain coming from Finnick and Mags.
Suddenly we were falling down a hill. Getting torn up by sticks and rocks until we hit the bottom.
"Ughhhh...." I groaned in pain. I turned my head to see Finnick wrapped around Mags. Katniss and Peeta were on the other side of me. Katniss was in a daze looking up. I turned my head to see that the fog had stopped thanks to a barrier.
I felt a nauseating pain rip through my head causing me to black out.
I felt a cool liquid encompass my body. Quickly followed by a burning pain all over my body.
"Ahhh! Ugghhhh....ahhh!" I couldn't even will my eyes to open. I was trapped in my own mind. I was trying to fight whatever was causing the pain to no avail.
"Shhhhh... it's going to be okay." A soft voice whispered to me.
I heard the soft hums of a melody next to me.
"Mari.... Mari... wake up." My mom's voice called out to me.
I opened my eyes to see my bedroom as a child. Sunlight was streaming through my thin white curtains. My metal bed frame squeaked as I rolled.
I opened my eyes to see my mom staring down at me lovingly as if she hadn't just seen last night.
"Breakfast is ready, go ahead and eat your dad will be waiting on you." She said her voice was soft and smooth.
I climbed out of bed finding a clean bowl of water, courtesy of my mom. I rubbed my face dry, obscuring my vision when I removed the towel I saw a lock of light brown hair almost tied up in a neat white bow.
I felt a pit in my stomach. This doesn't belong here.
I ate my breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast and quickly ran out to find my dad so we could go to work.
I jumped off the front porch and looked around. I couldn't see my dad anywhere, or my mom for that matter. She'd usually say goodbye to us and hand us our lunches.
"Mom....Dad...."
"Mom! Dad!" I yelled louder.
I heard something behind me. I looked to see my parents hurling blood and vomit.
"Mom! Dad! What's wrong?!"
"Oh sweet pea, we're fine. But you look so beautiful today, make sure you bring Ms. Shora this as a thank you." My mom said blood dripping from her mouth.
I scrunched my eyes in confusion before looking down. I was in my reaping day dress.
My eyes jumped open. I was met with a beautifully cultivated blue sky, flat white clouds filled in the spaces. I felt someone stroking my hair as if comforting me. I rolled my eyes back to see Finnick gazing down at me, his face filled with dread.
"Finnick..." I muttered my mouth felt dry.
He sat me up slightly. "Here drink this." He held a container of water to lips, I began to take slow sips. I felt strangely calm, almost inebriated.
Once I was done drinking, I looked around finally noticing we were on the beach. I saw Katniss and Peeta by the water fishing. I looked up to see that finnick was leaning up against a tree, I was inbetween his legs my head on his chest.
Crunch.
I heard what sounded like footsteps stepping on dry leaves nearby I jerked my head but didn't seeing anything. That's when I realized I didn't see Mags anywhere. Finnicks must have read my expression because he answered the question on my mind.
"Mags didn't make it..." He said, his eyes were staring out into the ocean. My heart broke for him. I knew that Mags was the last of his family, having essentially raised him. I wrapped his hand with mine, rubbing my thumb along the back of his hand. His head fell onto my shoulder, I heard him breathe in deeply as he wrapped his arms around me as if trying to convince himself I'm really here.
"We had just barely made it out of the fog, I tried to keep her safe but the fall had already taken enough out of her. I had told her told her to stay there and I would help her. Katniss had dragged you most of the way to the water. We'd just finished submerging you when... I went to go get Mags... but sh-she looked at me before going back... she was smiling."
I stayed silent, attempting to keep my own tears from falling. I didn't have the chance to get to talk to her too often but any fool could see how kind she was.
"It's my fault, she died... I couldn't keep her safe... I know what she would say I can hear her even now but..." I could hear his voice breaking as he whispered into my ear. I knew he wasn't crying, this was as much emotion he was willing to show knowing we were being watched, knowing our lives and emotions were being used as entertainment.
I forced my sluggish body to move so that I could face him. I was kneeling infront of him. "Do not blame yourself. It was not and will never be your fault. You did everything you could." I stared into his eyes. As I thought they were dry and his expression was tired but I could feel the turmoil that was going on inside of him.
"Remember." I said squeezing his hands tightly.
"Hey we managed to catch some fish and some oysters."
I turned to see Peeta holding up the catch.
"Okay, it was mostly Katniss." He said rolling his eyes.
"How are you feeling, Mari?" Katniss asked sitting down.
"I actually feel pretty good." I said my body feeling lighter than usual.
We began to eat in mostly silence. Usually, I would find eating raw fish nauseating but I was much too hungry to actually care.
Suddenly, a huge wave started from the edge of the arena sending tons of water until it crashed over the cornucopia. It was so massive it made the waves on our side pick up.
Soon after that anomaly occured we saw three people running out of the trees covered in blood. We watched quietly to identify who it was.
"Johanna? Johanna!" Finnick called out running to her before hugging the woman.
"It seems we have more allies." Peeta muttered.
Chapter Text
We listened to Johanna's account of what went down in their zone.
"Hot, steamy, thick blood falling from the sky! We were basically gagging on it." She said covered head to toe in the substance.
"Tick tock... tick tock..." Wirewess muttered crazily while pacing.
"What's wrong with her?" Katniss asked concerned.
"Shock." Beetee answered before asking for water after scrubbing himself clean.
Johanna was becoming more unstable by the moment. Wiress kept repeating the same phrase and attempting to get Johanna's attention.
"Tick tock... tick tock... tick tock..."
Until Johanna pushed her down causing Katniss to come to her defense. Finnick had to break up the fight but not before Johanna yelled out.
"I-I got them out for you!!" She said angrily, her voice dripping with vitriol as Finnick held her back.
"What is she talking about?" Katniss muttered to Peeta who had pulled her away.
I stood with Wiress and Beetee away from the hot tempers of the group. I scratch the back of my neck, watching as Finnick and Peeta tried to deescalate the situation.
After the flared tempers cooled and everyone went to their own little corner. Katniss ran out to the ocean helping Wiress get cleaned.
I walked into the water after Katniss and Wiress and began assisting with the clean up.
"So...you and Finnick huh?"
She began out of the blue. I felt my face heat up at her comment.
"Yea." I mutter while cupping my hands to gather water pouring it on Wiress' blood soaked hair. The water around us began to turn a dark red as it dispersed.
"How'd that happen? You seem too... normal for him." She commented.
I feigned a pained expression. "What am I chopped liver?"
Her eyes widen momentarily. "I- no... I didn't mean it like that..." She tried to explain.
I laughed at her sincerity. "It's okay I was joking and I know what you mean." I glanced towards Finnick who was cleaning his trident while talking to Johanna and the others. "He's larger than life." I responded simply.
"Tick tock... tick tock...tick tock...."
"Have you figured out what she's trying to say?" I ask.
Katniss let's out a sigh before looking around at the arena around us lost in thought until her eyes widened.
"It's a clock!" She whispers to herself.
"It's a clock! The arena it's a clock at certain times depending on what area you are something will happen. Like that big wave, the blood rain, and the poison fog!" Katniss explained as we walked as a group.
"Tick tock!" Wiress nodded her head excitedly.
"You're a genius Wiress!" Finnick told her with a smirk.
Peeta drew a picture of the arena. He added the times and the details of what would happen during each hour.
I heard what sounded like rocks plopping into the ocean. I looked up just in time to see Gloss stabbing Wiress in the neck, I called out with fear as the blood sprayed out of her neck.
Katniss was quick, already having her arrows drawn it soared and struck Gloss, killing him. This brought Cashmere and the rest of the careers out. It would've been a full on battle until the landmass we were
standing on began to spin.
"Mari!!!" Finnick called out to me.
I grabbed a hold of something solid, clinging for dear life. It wasn't long until the weapons went flying into the air. I managed to dodge a few before I felt something strike my calf.
I cried out in pain, my fingers slipped before I adjusted my grip, I could feel my hand began to slip. I tried my best to spot Finnick as I struggled to hold on. I clenched my eyes tight as I began to see double.
I lost my grip as soon the land mass stopped spinning causing my body to bounce against the rocks, sharp pain erupted throughout my body. I was able to hold onto a ledge before entering the water.
I laid there too terrified to get up. I sucked in a big breaths of air to the point of pain, breathing unevenly. I got to my knees feeling the sharp pains and aches jolt across my body. I looked at my leg to see blood seeping from a jagged wound.
"Mari!!! W-where are you Mari!" I heard Finnick's voice approaching.
"I-I'm here!" I say as loud as I can. In the water I saw something slithering beneath the waves. It was slender and dark, I was entranced by it unable to look away. I felt my hand reach out...
"Mari! What's wrong!?" Finnick grabbed me softly, checking my body to see my injuries. His voice snapped me back to reality.
"Uhh...uhhh just some scrapes..." I respond slightly disoriented.
"What's that on your leg?" He asked scanning my injury.
"More than a scrape?" I answered my voice light. Finnick rolled his eyes before putting me on his back.
"No, It's okay I can walk." I said slightly embarrassed but mostly guilty.
"Remember what we talked about." He spoke his voice serious as he walked towards the others.
Chapter Text
We returned to the beach taking care of our injuries. Finnick cleaned my wound with clean water. I bit my tongue to keep from hissing, but I saw him flick his eyes up to my clenched fists. He carefully wrapped my leg up, not too loose or tight.
I watch as his golden hair moved softly in the breeze. I watched the way his eyebrows furrowed in deep thought as he finished with my bandage. Until he caught me looking at him, his eye softening at my gaze. He leaned foward and kissed me on the forehead.
I smiled softly.
"AUGHHHhhh!" The sound of retching made us turn.
"You two make me wanna vomit." Johanna said irritably. We chuckled at her, Finnick joking back.
I stayed with Johanna, Finnick caught some food for the group. Katniss and Peeta were off talking to one another in hushed voices. Beetee was up against a tree staring out into the distance solemnly.
The friendship between Johanna and I if you could call it that was mostly quiet. We usually didn't talk all that much but we understood eachother pretty well despite that. Whenever I did try to talk about what friends normally talk about it usually didn't end well. That's why I'm suprised when she brought up Finnick first.
"You're good for him." She muttered twirling her axe lazily. My eyes were practically bulging out of my head from her comment.
Once I reeled myself back in I responded. "Thank you, that really means a lot coming from you." I said smiling.
Her face cracked into one as well.
Crunch... crunch...
I turned my head towards the forest, listening in for the culprit. It was hard to see due to the dense foliage blocking the sunlight from above. I scratched the back of my neck still scanning.
"Mari?"
I turned back around. "Oh...Yea."
"What wrong, you look kinda spooked." Johanna asked.
"Ohhh I thought I heard footsteps but I don't see anything." I respond calmly.
She scrunch her eyebrows, unease settling in her features. "How are you feeling? You look gross."
I chuckled. "Thanks for asking, its probably the heat. I think I am thirsty though my mouth is feeling dry."
Johanna handed me a container full of water. "Go crazy, we still have that spile."
I took a sip, before guzzling the rest of it down. I felt her eyes on me as I drank.
"Thank you, I'll fill it back up for you." I planted my hands on the ground to get up.
"Yeah and watch you keel over." She asked pulling me back down. "You sit and rest I'll fill it up." She said her eyes studying me.
That afternoon everyone was going over the plan on how to get the rest of the tributes. Katniss and Johanna were chiming in with questions. Peeta was nodding along agreeing with the plan.
Finnick was watching Mari.
Her eyes were glazed over staring into space for the past six minutes. He watched as she jerked her head to the trees as if she heard something. He watched as she scratched the back of her neck, it looked red probably from the sun baring down on her. She suddenly snapped back into reality listening in on the plan before glancing at Finnick to find him staring at her with an anxious expression. She smiled wanting to ease his worries, just thinking he was concerned about the plan.
Later that night the group had made it to the lightening tree. They were about to split up when Katniss began to argue. The group went back and forth until Beetee put a stop to it.
Katniss and Johanna went down to the beach with the coil to bury it under the sand and into the water. Peeta, Mari, and Finnick stayed behind to act as gaurds. The group was mostly quiet, listening out for any threats. Peeta was hanging around Beetee in case he needed something. Finnick was making sure to keep within ten paces of Marigold at all times as they patrolled the perimeter. Glancing over his shoulder every few minutes. Marigold held her machete ready to strike if necessary, peering into the darkness for something to pop out.
I felt utterly exhausted. The humid heat was getting to me. Even with my body sweating the heat stayed cloaked around me. I could feel the sweat dripping from my temples. I looked over to Finnick to see how he was doing, he seemed fine if not tired. Suddenly, the image of him began to warp. His arms and legs began to melt into a puddle of goo around him. I was too shocked to say anything.
My breathing began to pick up and I rubbed my eyes roughly with the back of my hands.
"Are you okay?" Peeta asked. Finnick looked over to see Marigold sweating profusely, her eyes were red.
I hesitated before speaking. "I- I'm not sure I think... I might have a fever." I said scratching my neck.
Finnick rushed over placing the back of his hand to her skin. He saw something peeking from behind her, he turned her slightly to see that she a had a red bump on the back of her neck, it was probably as big a fat grape. His eyebrows instantly furrowed, his mouth sank into a frown. In the middle of it looked to be a thin thorn, he hurriedly removed it.
"AHHHHHH!!!!!" A scream cried out in the distance.
"Katniss?!" Peeta said to himself. He rushed out to find her, leaving us still at the tree.
Finnick clench his fist. "Dammit!" He looked back at me. "Stay here with Beetee don't move!" He demanded. He quickly guided me to sit down closer to Beetee who was done with the tree. "I'll be back, stay here, we're almost done."
Finnick ran after Peeta, disappearing into the night. His golden hair faded away.
Beetee handed me some water. Which I drunk happily before giving it back to him. "I am going to keep watch, please do not move."
I nodded my head, my eyes half closed. Unconsciousness threatening to take me. Until I saw someone standing about twenty feet to my right. They stood at the tree line staring at me, waiting for me to notice.
I stood up not recognizing them right away, clenching my machete. I squinched my eyes to concentrate.
"Dad..." I muttered softly my eyes moistening. I took a step foward before stopping.
"Hey there Mari. I see they found a way to drag you back out here." He said his face sorrowful.
"I'm coming home." I responded. "Real soon, I promise."
He kissed his teeth. "Like last time?" He questioned his face hardening.
"N-no... I came back home." I said pleadingly.
"Oh yea, you came home, but not before you got us killed!" He accused. "We- I told you to fight, to do what you had to do to come back to us. You killed people but you couldn't take that!"
He started disappearing into the forest. I chased after him, calling for him desperately.
"Dad! Dad! Please I'm sorry. I'll do better! I yelled out. I did my best to run, but my body wasn't listening to me. My legs felt heavy. Like each step felt like sinking into quicksand. I tripped over branches scraping my arms to push past the vegetation, forgetting I had my machete on me. My heart was pounding against my chest, I swore I could hear it. I made it to a small clearing where the trees above didn't block out the moonlight from the sky. I stared up at the stars hyperventilating as I felt a cool breeze hit my face, my head was spinning.
"Mari....Mari...."
I heard my name in the distance but I couldn't tell from who or where. I turned my head all around seeing nothing but trees forgetting what brought me out hear.
I saw a big flash of lighting strike not too far from me. I heard a loud cracking noise like something huge breaking apart. I snapped my neck up to see a hole form in the arena. Oh yeah that's right I'm in the arena still...
Then there was total darkness.
"Mari...Mari!!...Mari!!!!" The desperate voice getting closer until I couldn't hear it anymore.

I sat on my hospital bed, my legs over the side. The lights were dim. Despite having slept for what felt like days, I was utterly exhausted listening to the constant beeping of the monitors. I was fiddling with a strip of rope and undoing it over and over again. The thoughts of the past overtaking my mind.
I remembered when I met Marigold.
Just the thought of her name makes my chest ache. I imagine a field of beautiful flowers where the the warmth of the sun is makes her skin glow. I can hear the waves rolling in the distance.
At first I thought she was simple. I remember first seeing in person at her Victor's speech in district four. I figured she'd break down crying when she thought she was alone but she just sat there lost in thought, until she met my eyes and it was like she saw through me.
Her deep brown eyes pierced through my carefully crafted facade. It felt like she knew what I was hiding, the feelings and thoughts I kept burried. I felt the need to speak to her but she was gone before I could.
The first time was I was able to speak to her was her first time mentoring, the 73rd games. She had no idea what she was doing strategy wise, I heard her mentor had recently passed away.
I approached her with my usual smirks and charm but she treated me like... anybody. I saw how she blushed when I did got closer. The way she looked back at me was innocent, like a schoolyard crush.
She didn't show much recognition in her eyes, she must've forgotten about me which makes sense our first encounter was brief if you could call it that, but still...it made an impression on me.
I remember talking to Johanna about her.
"Yea, I bumped into her while in the hallways and all she said was excuse me and just smiled like an idiot." She rolled her eyes, leaning back against the wall.
"Real weird if you ask me, she seems soft. I told her to look where she was going and she just stared at me and asked if I wanted to go eat with her?" She muttered the last part, her eyes fixated on something past me.
Every time we met I would learn more and more about her. Until that faithful night I saw her crying on the tribute center roof.
I had went out there to be alone for once. I was utterly drained from mentoring tributes and keeping up public appearances. It was difficult to separate the real me from who I had to be.
I turned the corner only to hear soft whimpering. It was that night that I realized something.
I want to keep her safe. I didn't want her to become someone she wasn't, I didn't want the capital to ruin her.
"What a shit job I did at that." I scoffed.
I listened to the monitors beep, as I sat on my bed imagining her face. Her dark eyes hidden from me, her rosy cheeks probably pale and cold by now.
I noticed Katniss standing cautiously at the entry way, looking at me wearily.
"I wish she were dead....I wish we were all dead." My voice was tired.
My body felt heavy.
It felt like being weighed down by bricks under water. I heard a slow beeping in the background. Where am I? Last I remember, I was with my dad... and he was...
The beeping started to quicken.
He was saying cruel things to me...
...No! That was a lie he would never. Right....?
I opened my eyes to see a blank and sterile room. I was alone and in bed, rough sheets covered my body. I sat up slowly taking notice of the room. The walls were white sparse of information that could tell me where I'm am. There were no windows to see if it was night or day. I was hooked up to a machine that ran thin tubes from me to some clear-liquid filled bags above my head.
All of a sudden the door opened and in walked an older women. She had on a white coat and her hair was noticeably graying. A wide smile graced her face as she approached me.
"Hello there, my name is Amanda." She said.
"W-where am I? W.hat am I doing here?" I asked trying to keep my voice steady, my throat felt dry.
"Oh you poor girl, you are at a hospital in the Capital. We saved you after what happened in the arena." She said her voice soft. "We managed to save a couple of the other tributes as well, they are doing just fine."
I looked at her with disbelief, the beeping got faster. Finnick! Where is he? What happened to him, is he okay?! My head was filling with questions but for some reason I was unable to let them out. Instead there was sinking feeling inside my chest.
She looked at my monitor with concern. "Don't worry it'll all be okay, I think you should rest you have been through a lot."
She began to press some buttons on the monitor. My body began to feel light. I fought to keep my body upright to no avail.
"Shhhh it's okay you're safe now." She said her smile burning it's way into my brain.

How long has it been?
I can't remember anymore?
When I close my eyes and think really hard. I can see how the sun shines on his golden hair, how his kind eyes gleam as they gaze upon me. I can feel his arms as they wrap around me...
I heard screams down the hall outside of my cell. I cover my ears, curling myself into a ball. When I first woke up they treated decently they fed me, gave me pain medicine.
But then the questions started...
"Where is Katniss? What is their plan? How are they-?"
Over and over they'd ask me. They said that if I told them they'd let me see Finnick. That he was safe, he was recovering nicely. I just had to tell the truth. I racked my brain for answers only to come up blank, the events of that night alluded me. I remember feeling scared and lost, I remember Finnick calling my name out, I could still hear the desperation in his voice.
Eventually, it became clear to them I either couldn't or wouldn't answer them. Which one didn't really matter.
Now I laid on the hard concrete ground of my cell. A blinding white light in the middle of the ceiling stared down on me. Whenever it turned on there was no shielding myself from its blinding light. When the light was on I could forget about sleeping.
When had the light been turned off last, I can't remember?
The screaming down the hallway intensified. Covering my ears did little to drown out the pain filled shrieks. The sounds bounced around in my head. I rocked my body and hummed a soft tune to try and pretend I was anywhere but here. I imagine I was home with Ms. Shora and Mr.Bowman, that I brought Finnick with me and I introduced them to eachother. That we are all laughing and having a great time together.
Ms. Shora would compliment him on how handsome he was while making sure to fill his plate with more food. We were all so happy. The sides of my mouth began to hurt from smiling so much.
Until I heard the creaking of my cell door opening.
I keep my eyes closed still imagining what could be. I hum louder to not hear the heavy boots walking towards me, to not hear the rattling of the chains.
Days had turned into weeks and weeks dragged into months since Peeta, Johanna and Marigold had been captured. Everyday I had been racked with guilt and shame. There was nothing I could do, say, or think to make it all better. The only thing that kept me going was the thought of me holding her in my arms. To hear her sweet voice whisper into my ears. To breathe in and smell her comforting scent. Every night I dreamt of her of what our life could be like if we lived in peace.
Every night I woke up in a sweaty panic when I realized she wasn't there.
Who knew if she was even alive. What horrors they had inflicted upon her. Still I hoped. Foolishly, I hoped. Against my better judgement, I hoped to hold her once again.
I walked into the main hall where announcements were made. People were bumping into eachother to make room. I felt sick as I stood amongst the crowd in a daze, the loud voices of the crowd dulled senses.
President Coin stood above the masses ready to give a speech.
She began speaking although I wasn't listening, I couldn't it was moments like these that made me retreat into my head. I noticed Katniss joined me at my side her face unusually giddy.
"I got her to agree to rescue the tributes, Mari too." She whispered.
It felt like time had suddenly stopped. My once numb mind began to race at her words.
A steady excitement threatened to overtake me. I wrapped Katniss in a tight hug as I reigned in my self control to keep from shouting out.
Maybe just maybe things could things work out.

I opened my eyes to be shrouded in darkness. I made a move to sit up before my body violently protested. I was racked with pain along my back and legs. I gave up, continuing to lay on my side.
It was quiet, unusually so. I used to hearing either the crazed mutterings of my cell mates or the hushed whispers of people talking outside my door. I closed my eyes again hoping for sleep or better yet death would take me.
As the thought crossed my mind guilt crept into my heart, like a needle pricking my heart.
I need to live. I have to but why... I'm tired...
My eye close.
Sleep almost lays it's claim on me.
My eyes snap open, when I hear loud noises in the distance.
I stand infront of the cameras. The night air is cold and crisp. The tip of my nose stings from the sharp breeze. My hand is in my pocket, attempting to ground myself in the present is difficult when I am being dragged back into the past.
I am broadcasting my experience of being trafficked to all of Panem. Every gruesome detail, every threat made and carried out against my family. It makes me sick to my stomach but I do it anyway. I'd do anything if it means getting her back. If this what I have to do to see Mari again, I'd face every creeping and crawling fear I had in my heart.
Once I was done speaking Katniss and I waited in the butterfly room. It's warm and quiet. Marigold would love this place. Katniss and I keep each other company as we await the news of the rescue mission.
Over the last few months I can honestly say she has become a trusted friend. She's rough around the edges but she cares for the people around her and will give everything for them; to be honest she reminds me a lot of Johanna. I'm sure Johanna would have some choice words.
Katniss and I continue to sit together mostly in silence. It took me a while to realize how genuine of a person she is. How she could have never faked her feelings for Peeta and they were always real even if she didn't know it.
Hours must have past and still no news. I anxiously mess with the rope in my hands. I can say honestly this thing has not left my sight in months. I'm surrounded by the beauty of nature and normally this would have been the focus of my attention but all I can think of is the person I want to share this with.
The doors behind us opened. We turned to see it was Haymitch. I scanned his expression for answers.
Are they alive? Did they get them? Were we too late?
He had a relieved look on his face before talking. "They found them, all of them."
Katniss and I jumped up and ran to the door where Haymitch was already leading us to where they were. We practically ran down the hallways it wasn't long before Haymitch was out of breath and just told us where to go.
We'd made it to the double doors. The words "medical personnel only" plastered with red writing. Through the windows we could see a few doctors and nurses but other than that it seemed empty.
I was frozen in place, my worst fears were being imagined, I clenched my jaws attempting to will myself past the threshold. Katniss and I shared a look, words were not needed we each knew what the other was thinking.
We walked through the door, I spotted Johanna in a bed. Katniss was ushered behind another set of closed doors without another word. I approached Johanna slowly, she was emaciated her hair had been shaved. She was hooked up to IV and oxygen. She weakly opened her eyes to see Finnick staring at her.
"Take a picture it'll last longer." She said closing her eyes again. Johanna let out an annoyed groan. "Buzz kill..." She said pressing the button to up the dosage of her morphling.
"She's in there." She gestured towards a door about twenty feet away. "She can't be in the light." She muttered exhausted.
"Thank you, we'll talk soon." He said.
"I'll be here." She said laying back, the morphling softening her voice.
I was curled up in on myself. The medicine they gave kept me from wanting to move around. I stared out into the darkness feeling at peace. I could finally sleep but something was missing like, I was forgetting something important. It felt like there was a dense fog in my mind, and I was too drained to clear it out.
A bright light slowly encased the room. I let out quiet whimper. I buried my face into my pillow to block the light. It wasn't much longer until I heard the door close again. I slowly peaked, to be met with pitch black.
"Marigold..." A hesitant voice called out.
I felt my heart skip a beat. The man's voice sounded familiar. It reminded me of rainy days at home, where I sat in my favorite chair by the window with hot coffee, just staring out the window as rain hit the window.
One of those rare moments of peace.
"Yes..." I replied barely above a whisper. I could hear his slow footsteps approach my bed but I wasn't scared.
"It's me Finnick."
As soon as I heard his name. Memories flooded through my mind. Nights on the tribute center roof talking and laughing. Being in the arena and waking up in his lap.
The first time we ever met at the Justice building in district 4.
As soon as I felt his presence closing in I reached out pulling him into my arms. I felt dizzy from moving so suddenly, but that didn't stop the tears that flooded my eyes as I thought back to that night of my capture.
"I-I'm so...sorry! I'm sorry for leaving and for m-making you worry!" Tears rolled down my cheek as Finnick's hold on me tightened.
"I-If I had just listened... W-when I woke up they told me that you w-were safe and that you would be okay as along as I told them everything...but I didn't k-know, I d-didn't know a-anything!"
"Shhhhh." One hand rested on my back the other on my head. "You are safe now, they can't hurt you anymore. We are together, they can't separate us not ever again." His voice steady and music to my ears.
We stayed in each other arms in the quiet darkness. I breathed in his scent listening to his heartbeat and I felt at home once again.
As Finnick lay next to his sweetheart he thought to himself.
The one thing I truly wanted to do was to protect her, to get her out in one piece and I failed. I left her behind knowing something wasn't right with her. I can't let that happen again, this has to end once and for all.

"It seems when she was in the arena she was stung by a tracker jacker. That's what caused the hallucinations and fever you noticed during the games." The doctor explained while flipping through the papers on his clipboard. "Fortunately it was only one sting. What I'm more concerned about is her sensitivity to light. Any exposure causes her overwhelming stress."
I sat in silence as I listened to the doctor explain. My fists were clenched as I listened to the tortures she endured. While she was sleeping I used a flashlight to get a glimpse of what I already knew.
She was clearly emaciated, her bones seemed to be poking out. I gazed at her face, her once plush cheeks were gaunt. I could see discolored splotches peaking out from her clothing in various stages of healing.
It took weeks of consistent exposure for her to be comfortable in the light again. I stayed by her side the whole time assuring and comforting her. Eventually, she was able to leave the hospital. The bright lights of district 13 put her on edge but for the most part she could manage it. Her skin looked sickly from the lack of natural sunlight.
We were all at the mess hall eating the perfectly portioned out food they gave us. I sat next to Finnick our arms touching. I tuned out the conversations and silverware clattering around us.
Finnick was teasing Katniss about her bad habits of speaking before thinking, Johanna smirked before releasing her own remarks. I listened to the conversation while picking at my food, making myself take a bite every few minutes so Finnick wouldn't notice and start worrying. It's been difficult gaining weight when the food is meant for survival. It breaks my heart whenever Finnicks looks at my plate to see food leftover, like he's disappointed in himself. I force myself just to eat most of it.
While Katniss and Joanna continue to bicker. Finnick leaned down to my ear.
"If you eat your food I might have a little treat planned for you." He whispered his voice was low it made by stomach do flips.
I found myself eating more and more of the tasteless mush on my plate that they called food.
He held my hand as we walked up the stairs. Our shoes clanked against the metal stairway until we stopped.
"Okay keep your eyes closed." He opened the doors the hinges creaking slightly. The doors shut quickly behind us.
"Can I open now?" I ask.
"Almost... now you can look." He said.
I opened my eyes to be surrounded by gentle lighting that reminded me of the sun. There were trees and flowers growing all around and fluttering from plant to plant were alluring butterflies. Laid out on the ground was a checkered blanket with an assortment of fruits and snacks.
I gasped my mouth watering at the thought of appetizing food.
"How did you get all this?!" I stood in complete shock.
"Don't worry I have a friend who has a friend." He answered vaguely while smirking.
We sat on the blanket, my body relaxed into his. I sat with my knees raised as he carefully cut the apples, pears, and strawberries to pass to me. I took my time eating, savoring the sweet and tart flavors. The soft songs of bird chirping echoed around us.
We laid there together in silence watching as the butterflies float around the room, their wings beating gently.
I closed my eyes feeling peace with Finnick underneath me. The warmth of his body soothing my mind. He wouldn't let me give up during my recovery even when it was difficult, even when I was crying, screaming and feeling like I was loosing my mind. He'd tell me how much he loved me and that he couldn't lose me, not even to myself.
I felt his arm drape over me like a protective cover. I felt was safe from all the world's dangers.
"There's something I want to tell you." His voice almost hesitant.
"What is it?" I asked curious.
"I want us to get married." He sounded serious. I snapped my neck to look at him.
"Really!? I said staring at him. My heart felt full I swear it would burst.
"Yes. I know that you are the only woman I want to spend the rest of my life with and I want to give you everything you want in life."
I wrapped my arms around him. "You are all I want." I said into his shoulder. He hugged me back.
"Before we get married there's something I need to do." He said.
"What?" He looked at me his eyes looked sorrowful.
"I'm going to fight.. I need to make sure that this ends." He's scanning my face. His eyes flickering across my face.
On the inside I feel as if I'm going to explode with emotion.
He's going to die. That is the one thought in my mind. I'm trying not to think it, but it is the only thought between my ears. All I can imagine is his bloody, mangled body dumped on the ground. His corpse being left alone to rot and fester.
I see him bleeding out slowly alone, crying for help that won't come.
I took shakey breathes before I speak "I-I uderstand w-why you feel the need to go." My gaze falls to the blanket. "B-but I will not let you go out there to d-die alone. If you go I'm going with you."
Finnick clenches his jaw and breathes in through his nose.
"No." Finnick answers as if the conversation was over.
"No?" I repeat.
"No, you are going to stay here where it is safe. I almo- no I did lose you and it was my fault."
He gripped onto my shoulders, his eyes held my own captive. "If something were to happen to you again- I wouldn't... I couldn't..."
I place my palm against his cheek as I leaned in closer the tops of our heads met. I want to tell him that if he goes out there and dies I'll follow him.
The words are on the tip of my tongue but I can't bring myself to say it.
"There is no way I'm letting you leave me in this place." His eyes widened at my stern tone. My voice felt like gravel in the back of my throat.
"I am going with you or we stay here."

Chapter Text
It took days for us to get close to Snow and those day were taxing to say the least. The groups main mission was to film propos of the war in reality we were several days behinds all the fighting.
There were still plenty of traps and obstacles that thinned our ranks. Our faces were plastered everywhere we could no longer travel through the streets, even without that there were too many pods to cover any significant distance.
That's when we decided to head underground.
Pollux knew his way around the passages. When they made him into an Avox they had him here underground for years, never seeing the sunlight. Never feeling anything but this stale damp air. It took a lot out of him to go back willingly.
"We can do this." Castor slapped his hand onto Polluxes shoulder.
It didn't take a genius to understand why he was repulsed by this place. We trudged through the murky waters that came to our ankles.
Finnick was adamant about being behind me the whole time.The group was mostly quiet besides the occasional question or remark about the interesting smells.
I adjusted the grip on my gun. Before we left district 13 it was clear during training that I wasn't the best at hand to hand combat, or anything close quarters. I could hold my own depending on the opponent, but I was much better at long distance combat.
We'd found a place to rest out of the water. It looked like a small access tunnel. We all laid out on the grated bridge. Katniss took the first watch as the rest us closed our eyes. I could hear the dripping of water onto the metal around us. The air here felt somewhat cooler.
I laid beside Finnick. His eyes were closed but he was still awake. I rested my own and thought of the my garden back home, knowing Ms. Shora she'd be taking care of it, and if she couldn't Daniel knows a thing or two about plants. He could probably keep them alive. I think back to the warmth of the sun on my skin, how the trees branches swayed in the wind casting their shade to keep me cool. The sound of cows out in the fields grazing on the land.
I felt Finnick wrap his arm around me, I leaned into him enjoying his warmth in the cool damp air, I almost dozed off.
It wasn't until I heard someone move did I open my eyes to see Katniss. She sat up and walked towards the entrance of our little tunnel. She didn't say anything. I saw the dim light of the holo shine into the darkness as she stepped down into the water. I listened to the steady beeps of the scanner.
Peeta woke up gasping frightened by whatever plagued his dreams. The others begun to wake up at the eery sounds in the distance.
"We have to go now! They released mutts!" We all stood and exited our resting place back into the main tunnel. We stood in the darkness, my heart was thumping out of my chest, ready for something to jump out at us. I looked out to only see pitch black, it made my stomach clench painfully.
"Pollux! What's the quickest way out of here?" Katniss asked. Pollux led the front of the group. I held my gun ready to shoot.
Gale shot his explosive round into the distance to make light for us. We quickly turned the other corner as we made it to a long corridor. The sounds us splashing water echoed through the tunnel.
We were blocked by a small opening. We had to go one at a time. I could feel hairs on my neck sticking up at the thought of those monsters lurking in the darkness waiting on us.
"You go next, Mari." Finnick prompted. I nodded my head. I slid my gun ahead of me, climbing across the concrete barrier until I made it to the other side.
"You go now Finnick!" I said beginning to panic. I searched in the darkness to see nothing.
He made his way through the barrier. There was only one person left, she had been keeping watch.
She turnt just as the mutts jumped out and mauled her, completely obscuring her from our sight. There were dozens of them all trampling over each other to get to us.
Katniss released her explosion arrow just as they were crossing the barrier. That gave us seconds to take off running down the tunnels. It wasn't long before we were over run with mutts. I ran with the group shooting any mutt that got too close. But it wasn't enough we were getting picked off one by one. We continued to run as Katniss released another arrow burning some to a crisp.
We finally arrived at the ladder that would take us up above ground. It was a free for all; between fighting the mutts and attempting to get closer to the exit. I heard a snarl too late before I was tackled under the murky water.
I thrusted my gun into it face as it opened its mouth. It took everything I had to keep it where it was. My arms were beginning to weaken. I kicked my feet to try and create some space. All of a sudden sharp prongs emerged from its abdomen, before it was thrown off of me.
"Get to ladder!" Finnick yelled, his voice desperate. I got up with my gun and ran to the ladder to see that Katniss and Peeta had already made it up as they urged me to hurry.
I slung my gun across my back so I could use both my hands.
I climbed up quickly to see that Finnick was right behind me. As soon as I made it up I turned around to help Finnick. When I saw more mutts quickly approaching about to grab onto him.
My eyes widen, my heart racing, everything was moving so slowly as I saw their claws reach out and sink into Finnicks legs. Blood gushed out as his expression contorted from the pain.
"AAuggHH!!!" He screamed out as blood drained from his face.
My body reacted. I grabbed gun with both hands before taking aim. I sprayed bullets upon bullets into the attacking mutts. I aimed for their heads as best I could.
The ones closest to him released their grasp falling onto the next line of ravenous beasts ready to attack.
"CLIMB FINNICK!!!" I screeched as I lay cover fire.
I heard beeping behind me but I payed no mind as Finnick got closer and closer until I could grab his arms using all my strength to pull him up. As soon as I had him off the ladder I saw Katniss throw something past us down to the mutts; and then a huge firey explosion erupted throwing me against the wall.
"Keep going! C'mon keep going!" Gale yelled.
I pulled Finnick to his feet. His leg was spurting out blood but I was not going to let him stop.
We ran into an open corridor with tons of thick red pillars. Soon after we entered we were being shot at by peace keepers. We returned fire and began to run towards the stair case all the way at the end.
We ran while taking cover from oncoming fire until beams of light began to stream down, they disintegrated anything that it touched. They seemed impossible to avoid, we ran as the beams shone down. Finnick was barely keeping up but I stayed with him making sure he didn't fall. It wasn't long before the floor was being ripped and eviscerated beneath our feet making us have to run even faster.
It made want laugh from the sheer ridiculousness of it.
We were so close to the stair way. Finnick seemed to find his third wind as he ran faster making sure to take me along as well. The floor exploded as we collapsed over the border barely avoiding been torn to shreds.
"Come on we can't stop!" Someone yelled out.
Everything hurt. I tried to catch my breath to keep going. My chest ached as I fought to control my breathing. I looked to see Peeta have a mental breakdown.
"I-I'm a mutt! N-no! I'm a mutt!" He repeated over and over. Katniss ran over to him, trying to snap him out of it.
I felt familiar hand wrap around my upper arm. I turned my head to see Finnick barely standing as he helped me up. I didn't have time to fully assess his injuries before we were up and running again. At least this time we weren't in immediate danger.
Cressida called back. "I know where we are! Follow me."
We jogged through the empty city streets, it was eerily quite. We jogged until we made it at what look to be a shop. Cressida knocked on the door while we waited for a reply the rest of the group watched our backs to make sure we were in the clear. Our group was decimated all that was left of us was Cressida, Katniss, Peeta, Gale, Pollux, Finnick and I.
I took a moment to appreciate the fresh cool breeze across my face, I looked over to Pollux.
His face was contorted. It was like he was still in that tunnel. Trapped.
The door opened. Cressida spoke. "Please let us in, it's me." She whispered her voice urgent.
The figure hesitated before letting us in with a low growl.
They ushered us deeper into their shop, away from the windows. I noticed we were surrounded by eery still figures that were adorned in Capital fashion.
The one who let us in was a tall and extremely thin woman with the ghastly face of a tiger. Her bones jutted out at odd angles. It was apparent this woman had been under the knife to achieve this specific look.
Katniss recognized her. "I know you, weren't you a stylist for the games?" She asked.
"You're right Katniss, this is Tigris and she's one of us." Cressida said.
The woman didn't say anything she only stared and let our a low snarl.
We took this time to heal our wounds, fill our stomach with scraps and regroup.
We all sat together mostly spread out in silence. I wasn't too badly injured cuts and scrapes that would heal in a few days.
Finnick however, his leg had thick puncture wounds from the lizard mutts. I thought back to that moment where I almost lost him forever. He was so close to being dragged back down. My body had just reacted when I saw him being attacked. I let the tears drip from eyes.
Finnick had essentially passed out at this point from the blood loss and exhaustion. I could see the sweat dripping from his forehead, If he had went any longer without medical attention...
I applied medicine to his bleeding wounds before wrapping it securely with gauze. After I cleaned my hands, I laid my body against his, my hand resting on his chest feeling his slow by steady heart beat.
"I'm so sorry, it's all my fault! I lied... Coin never sent me on a secret mission to kill Snow. I lied and I got us all killed!!! Katniss was distraught, her voice was hoarse.
It was a deafening silence before Cressida spoke up. "We know...we knew that Coin never sent you in but we didn't care because you swore to do what we all wanted... to kill Snow to end this once and for all."
"Katniss we all knew this mission could cost us our lives... this is not your fault so please don't blame yourself." I spoke softly.
Katniss looked back us her eyebrows scrunched in confusion.
"We are in this together we have to finish what we started, we are so close we can't stop now." Gale said, his eyes were filled with a cold determination.
With most of the group being killed off we had to come up with a new plan. That was when an announcement aired live from Snow himself.
"Capitol citizens please come to my mansion. There will be food, water and medicine for those who need it..."
"Who knew he had a bleeding heart?" Gale sneered.
"He know he's lost the war." Cressida thought aloud.
"That's our chance." Katniss said after the announcement finished. We looked at each her, waiting for her to explain.
"Do you want us to sneak in with the crowd?" I guessed.
"Yes." She said determination marking her face.
We stood amongst the carnage as the capital released bombs on it's own citizens.
On its own children... for what reason the war was already over.
It was clear when the resistance had finally arrived with all their manpower that the Capital had finally lost.
So why?...
There was nothing to gain from doing it and if there was anything I knew about Snow was that he didn't do things for no reason whether it was for financial, political or personal, there was always reason.
So why were the bodies of dozens of children burning infront of his mansion?
Why were the parents of those children wailing as smoke rose from the ashes?
It didn't make any sense. This should have never happened.
I felt Finnick pull me close as the rebels gained control of the area and seized the the peacekeepers. It was only a matter of time before they completely seized the capital.
But that didn't bring joy to me in this moment. I should be happy the war is finally over, the games are finally done but at what cost?
We stood at the wreckage side by side watching as Katniss was taken away for medical attention.
We sat at the big round table the last living victors as well as Alma Coin.
There was so few of us left, my heart ached.
She called us here to discuss something. I scanned her face and something smelled fishy why would we need to be here? What little time I had spent with her, I didn't have high hopes as to what she wanted to talk about.
"I have brought you here today to decide one thing. The people of Panem have suffered greatly for so long to quench their blood thirst it was brought to my attention to host a sort of symbolic Hunger Games."
The room went silent, the air felt heavy. I felt sick to my stomach at what she said. After all we went through we haven't learned anything. We are just going to repeat the cycle of punishment and murder.
I looked towards Finnick his jaw was tense. He was able to receive proper medical care for his leg. I remember as they put him under. His eyes stayed on me until he could no longer keep them open. I remember watching the doctors hands move as they cut open his leg to route out the infection.
There was a long scar on his calf that left him with a slight limp.
He glanced at Katniss who held his gaze for a moment, her eyes just as intense. They were doing something here. I trust the both of them with my life whatever decision they come to is for a good reason.
Johanna voted yes.
Enobaria voted yes.
Finnick voted yes.
I voted yes.
Peeta voted no.
Katniss voted yes.
"I'm with the Mocking Jay." Haymitch said.
"With a majority vote, we have reached a decision." Coin said smiling her eyes prideful.
Katniss walked the length to approach Snow. He was tied up to a post waiting for his execution. The crowd was huge with hundreds and hundreds of people all gathered for this moment. I held tightly onto Finnick's hand as we stood with the other victors.
I wasn't sure what plan Katniss had cooked up but I trusted her judgement.
In the little time I knew her she's already been through so much. As things were looking insurmountable, she may have crumbled but she was able to lean on those around her and pick herself back up.
She could be pretty impulsive but at the end of the day she knows right from wrong her best to make the right choices. That is what I admire about her, she cares about doing the right thing.
Coin finished her speech.
Katniss raised her bow and arrow, aiming it at Snow. Finnick pressed me closer to his body. I watched her facial expressions which were muted. I saw her eyes flicked upward.
At the last second, Katniss raised her arms setting her arrow loose, plunging it into Coin's chest. She collapsed falling onto the stone below.
Snow broke out in laughter, blood dripping from his mouth.
The crowd erupted in yelling and jeering as they pushed past us right to Snow bludgeoning him to death. Finnick shielded me with his body as we were surrounded by an angry crowd attempting to get to Snow.
In the chaos I saw Peeta snatching something away from Katniss, her stunned expression before being dragged away.

Chapter Text
I laid back in my chair sealing the envelope to mail to Katniss and Peeta. Listening to the waves crash against the beach. The sun was shining, warming my body from the inside. Finnick swam in the ocean enjoying the peace. I was so zoned out I didn't notice him approaching me as I was suddenly picked up.
"Ahhh!" I shrieked. His strong arms supporting me. "Be careful, I'm heavy!" I said scared of being dropped.
"What makes you think that?!" His voice light with mockery.
"I don't know, how about this behemouth of baby in my belly." I said laughing.
We stayed out by ocean for hours. Walking the beach while we held hands, collecting sea shells to take back home. I ran my fingers through his wild hair, pulling slightly as he brought his lips onto mine. He picked me up and I wrapped my legs around him. I felt him slide his fingers underneath the back of my bathing suit.
"Careful that how I got like this." I said gesturing towards my protruding belly.
I remember the day I told him.
We stayed in the Capital to see how things would change. After Coin was killed an emergency election was held and Commander Paylor from District 8, became the president.
After things calmed down, we were able to arrange a small ceremony. We didn't want any fanfare just our closest friends. I don't know how they did it but Haymitch and Peeta were able to get Katniss out of custody the night before she was exonerated and sent back to District 12.
Besides them Cressida and Pollux were also invited we spent that night drinking, eating and dancing our cares away.
"Husband!?" Ms. Shora stumbled, Mr. Bowman held onto her to keep her from falling.
"Hello, sir, ma'am." He addresses each of them before shaking Mr. Bowman's hand.
Ms. Shora was still reeling from the news. I spent the next few months introducing Finnick to all the important people in my life. We spent almost waking moment together and though some nights my mind was too scattered with thoughts to sleep, when I realized I had Finnick next to me none of my worries seemed to matter. I'd stay awake studying his face, he no longer wore the mask he was force to wear for years.
It didnt take much convinving when Finnick wanted to go back to District 10.
"How are you feeling today?" He asked concerned. I had just set my luggage down when I stumbled from a sudden wave of dizziness.
"Not great." I replied sipping my water, attempting to get comfortable in my chair.
I'd had just thought it was all the traveling. We were able to use the train to travel. Until then the only time I used the train was for the Hunger games and that usually doesn't settle anybodies nerves.
"I should call for a doctor, you've been feeling crappy for days. Finnick said getting up.
"It would take a while before one would arrive." I countered.
"That's reason enough for me to call now." He said telephone in hand.
Usually I would be back to normal after a day....
It suddenly hit me why I might be so sick.
"How do you feel about kids?" I asked my eyebrows raised.
He froze looking back at me, his expression was confused at my sudden questioning. He dropped the phone running to me when he realized what I was talking about. He picked me up pulling me into his embrace as I laughed as his excitement.
"It's so fun though." Finnicked said capturing my lips again.
He moved his kisses to my neck as I continued to play with his hair, the setting sun shone upon it. I let out gaspy moans as he nipped at my neck leaving marks. My fingers dragged to his back as I clung to him, I felt myself wanting to be closer to him.
"Careful now." His voice was playful but low.
"You're the one who started this..." I said whining.
"I'll be a good husband and finish it." He said smirking.
"What would I do without you." I whispered.
"You'll never have to find out."
