Jude Duarte only saw darkness at first. An endless chasm beyond her with nothing discernable or recognisable. For a short moment, she suspected herself to be dead, for the clutches of the grim reaper to finally find her. It was a ridiculous notion, one caused by the cartoons her mother had forbade her from watching and the order she had rebelled against. A supernatural force, cloaked in all back with a scythe longer than the reaper was tall. She’d grown to fear the figure, an unavoidable habit she still had. Her heart beat uneasily when a faerie’s cloak was too long, her palms clammy when she saw a curved blade attached to an intricately carved staff. She’d barely hidden her panic attack the last time one of their many subjects had gifted her the gardening tool. Jude had been sure they knew of her irrational phobia, taking advantage of the weakness but no one had yet to make a move. Leaving her to think in the silence.
