Work Text:
Business was usually one of Yasuhiro’s least favorite things to do. All that work was just so… Boring. But, it was times like these after long days with Byakuya that he couldn’t help but appreciate it, even after everything. Even if they were getting to their hotel at almost the middle of the night. After all, they were in a nice city right now, and their room was comfortable, fit with soft sheets and air conditioning.
Yasuhiro was quick to make himself at home while Byakuya stepped into the bathroom almost immediately to change out of his suit. Yasuhiro could only roll his eyes, teasing him as he left since they’d been living together for how long now? Byakuya could totally change right in front of him. Regardless, Yasuhiro let him. Too lazy to change himself, he just tossed his jacket off to the side, placed their suitcase to the side of the hall, and promptly collapsed backwards onto the bed. The silence was, admittedly, nice, especially after all the meetings and things they’d sat through. He always hated meetings… He never really paid much attention, anyway. Byakuya would usually give him a summary later on the next day.
He listened as the water for the shower turned on. Ah, well that made a little more sense. Seeing as Byakuya would likely take a while, Hiro lifted himself from the bed and over to the sliding glass door to the balcony. With a pause, he pushed the curtains to the side and subsequently opened the door. Almost instantly, the cool air hit his face.
Leaving the door open, he stepped outside. The view was… Well, it really wasn’t anything special, he supposed, but compared to what he was used to seeing - damaged buildings, falling apart and constantly clouded skies - even a simple cityscape was rewarding. A few buildings had their lights on, too far away for Hiro to see motion, but it was nice to know other people were still awake and moving about. The buildings were smaller than the one they were in, which was the tallest building in the city at the moment. That wasn’t really the special part, however, the real beauty was the sky itself. Unlike other parts of the country, the skies here were clear as could be, fading from an almost deep purply-blue down to a night magenta. Stars dotted across the sky, easily visible. It wasn’t something he’d seen in ages, really. And, despite the simplicity, it was nice. It wasn’t the clearest of skies or the least light polluted, but it was nice.
With a light smile, he leaned against the railing, letting his arms hang off the sides as he gazed downward at the streets below. From up here he couldn’t see people going by, and there really weren’t many cars (people weren’t really driving very much anymore, even less so than they had previously), but he could still sense life regardless.
For a few moments, it almost felt like the world had never fallen to despair for so long. For just that moment, Yasuhiro felt like nothing had ever happened. That maybe they’d really, finally, won. That maybe he and Byakuya were just like any other traveling couple, sharing a room for the night.
He sighed, but that was really just wishful thinking.
All but that last part, maybe.
Footsteps followed behind him not long after, albeit much slower. “Shouldn’t you be going to sleep?” Byakuya questioned.
Yasuhiro didn’t turn, “Isn’t it nice, Toges?” He mused aloud, gazing over the cityscape beneath them and pushing back the somewhat mournful thoughts he’d been having. “Being in a city that’s just so… Normal? I’ve gotten too used to being around destroyed buildings all the time.”
Byakuya hummed, not quite moving up to stand next to Yasuhiro, but instead leaned against the table just behind him. “I suppose so,” he agreed.
“The stars are nice,” Yasuhiro added, glancing back up at the sky again. The moon gazed back down at them, its crescent shape seeming to follow the shape of the sky. “The city almost feels alive.”
For a long while Byakuya didn’t respond. Though he didn’t seem judgemental. Finally, though, he continued. “I can’t disagree with you,” he replied. “What about it?”
This time, Yasuhiro was the one who didn’t respond. He held his tongue for a while, just admiring the view and thinking hard. Finally, he continued.
“Y’know what my ideal life would be like?” He asked absentmindedly, though he didn’t wait long before continuing. “Something like this. Just… I dunno, living somewhere. Preferably quieter than this, but I wouldn’t mind an apartment, either! Doesn’t really matter. Maybe some more grass and trees. I always liked plants. Somewhere we can just live and enjoy life. Where we could go shopping together for food or whatever else and you can scold me for trying to buy way too much of things that we almost certainly don’t need because we won’t eat that much. Or we could just walk down the street and find a place to eat together. It doesn’t have to be fancy, either, though I know you’d prefer that. We could go on a date to a museum or something, but it’s not really a ‘date’ because I know you don’t like to call it that. Maybe we have pets…” He trailed off, nodding with a smile as he turned, just a bit to see Byakuya’s face. He almost regretted it. With the soft light of the moon and the city beneath them, he almost looked heavenly. “Something like that.”
Byakuya stared back intently, his eyes thoughtful and his eyelashes reflecting the soft and pale light of the moon. “Is that so…?” He muttered, eyes trailing back over to the rest of the city. In the distance sat mountains, somewhere just barely still in view, but Yasuhiro had ignored - but now, Byakuya stared at them intently.
After a few moments, Byakuya hummed thoughtfully, placing his hands against his chin for a few moments as he considered. “Well… I can’t give you all that just yet,” he began - which was reasonable, Yasuhiro supposed. It would be kind of difficult to just fix the world in one day. “But, we technically aren’t needed back at headquarters for two more days. What do you say after tomorrow we spend some time looking around this city? Perhaps find a place to eat before we leave.” His smile was small and soft, but more than present enough for Yasuhiro.
“Really?”
Byakuya glanced to the side, barely crossing his arms. “Yes,” He repeated, “How does that sound…?”
Yasuhrio chuckled, smiling sweetly. Byakuya really was considerate and soft, even if he didn’t show it all the time. To think that just a year ago and a half ago or so, they probably wouldn’t have even been sharing a bed yet. It just felt… Unreal. “Man, Toges! You’re so soft these days, y’know?” He reached forward, placing a gentle kiss against Byakuya’s cheek. “That sounds great. I’ll even let you pick where we eat! That way you don’t have to deal with my ‘gross commoner food’ or whatever.”
For a brief moment Byakuya looked surprised, but then he smiled, albeit a small one. “Yes, yes… Alright,” he muttered, brushing Yasuhiro off as he stepped back into the hotel room. “We should be getting to sleep now. It’s late, and you’re not going to be happy when you have to wake up early tomorrow.”
Yasuhiro groaned, “What!? Seriously? Again?” He whined, begrudgingly following along into the room. Waking up early was not what Yasuhiro would call enjoyable. That was one of the things he would leave out of his visions for the future - he wanted to sleep in all he liked. Still, he knew Byakuya was just trying to be considerate, and the exhaustion was slowly growing on him, so with little further comment, he flopped back down into the bed with a yawn as Byakuya gently shut the door and closed the curtains.
Fumbling with the blankets for a while until he finally managed to get beneath them, Hiro waited until Byakuya finally laid down too and set his glasses aside before draping himself over the other, who, hesitantly, accepted. “Goodnight, Toges,”
Byakuya sighed lightly, but Hiro could hear the smile in his voice, especially now that he couldn’t see Byakuya’s face. “Yes, goodnight, Hiro.”
