Chapter Text
He can't remember how it happened.
One moment they were fighting. About what? About soccer? About them? About Isagi-There was always something.
Whatever, the fight doesn't matter.
What matters is what that fight lead to. One of them stormed off, the other followed...
Then, a truck came into view.
A truck, out of nowhere, barreling their way. Even Nagi, gifted with all his speed and flexibility couldn't dream to avoid it.
And he didn't try to.
Not when Reo was about to get hit.
Nagi forgot the fight in a flash, focused all his strength into the balls of his feet and spun as if he's about to kick a ball, but this time he's going to kick Reo with all his might. Normally, this is something he'd never even consider doing, however it's the best course of action he could think to take in that moment.
A scream, a flash, a loud thud.
A ringing noise, and then...nothing. All went silent.
It's still silent, rather.
Nagi is slowly coming to. He always takes forever to get up in the morning, but something makes him hurry this time, makes him shoot up like Reo's life is in danger.
Because Reo is in danger, isn't he?
Was?
Hm?
Nagi opens his eyes, squints at how bright the sun is, but that isn't what bothers him. What bothers him is the air. The ambience. Something about it is too...crisp?
Weren't they in the city?
Where is the hustle and bustle?
No. Forget the air. Forget the missing noise
What's with this scenery?
Nagi's dumbfounded, staring at what looks like one of his rpg games. He's in a fresh meadow. In the distance, there's a castle.
"Reo!" Nagi gasps. Screw the view. It'll have to wait. Where the fuck is Reo-
"Nagi?"
Nagi jolts, turning too fast, hurting his neck as he spots Reo, comically splayed out behind him on his back. There's grass in his hair and even a tiny flower stuck to his lips. (As if he fell from the sky and tumbled all over the meadow.)
"Reo..." Nagi blinks and rubs his eyes.
It's really Reo. He's here. He's alright. Nagi sighs out slowly.
"We...What happened? Where are we?"
"..."
Nagi looks around, as if the answer will present itself...Which, maybe it does. He's not sure if he should say it out loud, though. Not sure how Reo will take it.
"Nagi, hey, I said where are we?!" Reo -sitting up now- is growing antsy as expected, voice rising.
Nagi shrugs "...I think we're in heaven."
Reo gapes at him. A long moment goes by.
"Impossible," Reo finally chokes out.
Nagi is irked by this. "Why?"
"I watched porn."
"..."
"..."
Nagi blinks. "I don't think it works that way."
Reo drops the discussion, looks around, runs a hand through his messy hair, huffing as he notices just how full of grass it is.
"There was a truck," he mutters under his breath.
"There was," Nagi blankly confirms.
"You kicked me."
"...I did."
"It hurt!"
"I'm sorry."
"We're...dead?" Reo laughs nervously, looking both amused, and also seconds away from having a meltdown. Nagi doesn't answer, doesn't need to. He waits for Reo to gather himself, which he does. He always does. Mikages aren't allowed to break down crying.
"You-Even here, even now, you don't look like you care about anything. You don't look like you care that we're DEAD," Reo points out with a dry chuckle.
What Nagi says next ruins all the effort Reo put into getting himself together
" 'cuz Reo's here," he shrugs, but his gaze-
His gaze holds way too much to be nonchalant.
"It sucks, I guess, but I'm okay 'cuz Reo's with me."
Reo inhales sharply, fights the stinging in his eyes, yet Nagi continues.
"We died together. I wouldn't have it any other way."
He's dead, so forget being a Mikage.
Reo bawls.
After crying his eyes out while Nagi quietly took each and every little piece of grass out of his hair, Reo finally calmed down enough to assess the situation.
"That castle," he points, eyes glimmering. Nagi nods. It's the only thing that stands out, really.
"Let's go there."
"Yes, boss."
Reo nearly falls over as he stands. Nagi practically dives to catch him. It's as if Reo's legs were broken for a split second, but he wiggles them a little and suddenly, nothing is wrong and he can walk just fine.
"A truck...Me killed by a truck?" he mumbles in disbelief.
Nagi decides to hold Reo's hand from there on out, and they begin walking. Only then does Reo feel the tremor in the other's grip.
So dying still matters even to someone like Nagi?
Reo is both sad, yet pleased by the realization. He's not alone in this.
"It's...so nice here."
"Mhm."
A small bird flies above them. A rabbit hops across their feet. A butterfly flutters by their faces. It's serene and unreal. It must be heaven, but in the back of their minds, there's another possibility. One that's all too cliché.
Nagi says it at last as a town before the castle comes into view.
"Isekai."
Reo cackles. "No fucking way."
